Got caught out. Had no idea was in the zone. Bought my diesel car because thought it was greener at the time. Just so upset. Trains were on strike. Never drive near London otherwise. Got fine letter late (royal mail strikes maybe?) I'm on about 2p above minimum wage. This just feels shit. £160 fine for one screw up. Off you go trolls

Yes . Just totally out of comfort zone driving there and missed signs. Bugger me for being a bit old, not very welcome our flabby new world ew way too dramatic and old not tech savvy

You have my sympathy, I’ve come home to a parking fine, I went to a retail park that has some pretty big shops, John Lewis, Homebase, Homebargains, TKMaxx and more. Unbeknown to me the carpark landlord has brought in a 2 hour time limit which considering type of shops is not enough, I was 18 mins over and has potentially cost me £100. I’ve appealed but no wonder the high street is dying. I’d rather they put a pay and display in, they can shove their free parking up somewhere where the sun doesn’t shine.

Fighting a private car park fine is much easier

Clymene · 25/01/2023 20:25

I've reported your post. You made a mistake and you got a fine. Stop being so bloody melodramatic

It's absolutely disgusting to say what you did.

You only have to pay £80 if you pay within 14 days.

Pay the fine. Don't do it again.

Clymene · 25/01/2023 20:26

ditherydotty · 25/01/2023 20:14

It's a disgusting charge that once again will impact the low earners. One friend may be forced to quit her job as a domiciliary care worker as they cannot afford a ulez compliant used car as simply can't afford to get a loan.

This is simply not true. Any only crappy petrol car is fine in the ULEZ.

OldCow1 · 25/01/2023 20:28

It's gone too far. The charge I'm OK with but the way way they're doing the fines is hitting people.e who are not trying to cheat their way out. It has become a stealth tax

It’s extending to all london boroughs from August. My friends just recently bought a camper van, her lifetime dream, and sold her car to help finance it as she couldn’t afford both. We live on the South London borough, so in Surrey but if she’s goes 1 mile up the road she’s got to pay £12 per day!

I'm going to have to either stop work and claim benefit, or pay £12.50 a day my husband the same vans are a ridiculous price were both self employed.

Applesandcarrots · 25/01/2023 20:31

You don't need to be tech savvy to be able to read signs

Moraxella · 25/01/2023 20:31

Phone them up and see if you can get it halved as delayed in the post due to RM strikes. We have successfully done that with two fines that were delayed

jannier · 25/01/2023 20:32

Clymene · 25/01/2023 20:26

That depends on your finances any petrol not meeting euro4 older than 2006 ....lots of us have crappy old cars because it's all we can afford obviously the rich are okay I'm guessing your car budget was more than £3000 or you've been able to regularly replace your car.

OP posts:

@jannier I've had my car 10 years. It's ULEZ compliant and is worth less than £3k

Oh god it’s ridiculous. People can’t cope with this aswell as all the other rises in cost of living.

NoCatsToday · 25/01/2023 20:42

I think you're missing the point of the ULEZ. It is to prevent and/ or severely reduce the number of polluting cars. If your car falls into this category then you pay £12.50. There are signs all over the place and they're almost impossible to miss. You can pay throughout the day. If you don't pay £12.50 then you are fined.

Exhaust pollution kills. The right of London kids not to die from it trumps anyone's right to drive a polluting vehicle.

You got the fine for not paying the ULEZ charge.

It is a tax and not by stealth, it’s a very obvious and open tax on the most polluting cars.

If you’re too “old” to properly read road signs then you shouldn’t be driving. No one else is at fault here and your posts are getting nonsensical.

At least have the decency to accept you were wrong, learn from it. Be a better person. Don't make flippant comments about serious issues.

OldCow1 · 25/01/2023 20:45

I'm all for moving towards green to be honest. Just feel I've been tricked on the " buy diesel it's greener " and very unfamiliar sith driving round there and it's not easy driving so people who are not familiar are easy targgets

OP posts:
Nimbostratus100 · 25/01/2023 20:48

appeal it - we did and got let off, even though we didn't have the postal strike defence that youve got. Its worth a try

DialsMavis · 25/01/2023 20:54

Nightmare OP, I hope they reduce it for you. DH has a habit of not noticing small signs for turning into rds that were previously OK and getting fines, but his hobby got too expensive and he has stopped for the moment.

I understand the reasoning for ULEZ but for us will mean another not all that green car being driven around. We have a diesel car purchased when we thought it was the best option for fuel consumption and the environment. Without the ULEZ expansion our plan was to use it until the end of its natural life and assume that by then electric cars would be more affordable and more practical for the distances DH drives. Now we need to buy a "crappy petrol car" that we wouldn't have needed otherwise as we simply can't stretch to electric yet.

OldCow1 · 25/01/2023 20:55

To be honest, I won't. From a few people's post I have recognised that I should no longer be driving despite having managed 40 + years behind the wheel ...

OP posts:
ditherydotty · 25/01/2023 20:57

@Clymene oh that's alright then, I'll just tell my friend to buy a crappy old petrol car so she can work 45 hours plus a week driving around to provide vital care to the elderly, just give up her reliable car as that she's worked hard to pay off and keep in in good order by servicing etc.

Oh how we judge eh

CanIGoHomeNowPlease · 25/01/2023 21:03

The ULEZ signs are enormous and you’d had to have been living under a rock to not know that diesel cars are persona non grata. Why do you think diesel prices and vehicle tax are so high?? To discourage us from using them!

you absolutely shouldn’t be driving if you find reading signs too high tech for you, no
