To be annoyed about being asked to pick up poo?

WFHbore2023 · 25/01/2023 13:15

I'm going to start this by saying - I did do it. I'm annoyed at myself, but I was a bit stunned.
I was walking along with my dog, earphones in. A woman with a pushchair was walking along the same path, walking towards us.
She pointed at some poo on the floor and said something to me, which I didn’t hear as I had my earphones in. I assumed she was asking if it was my dogs poo, so I just said no. I took out an earphone and she said ‘have you got a poo bag? will you pick it up? I hate it when people leave poo’
I was a bit shocked so just picked it up and said ‘yeah, me too’ but afterwards I was like ‘wtf?!’
In hindsight, I should have just given her a bag to pick it up if she’s so bothered by it!
I pick up my dogs poo, and I happily do it, because that is MY job! It’s not my job to pick up other peoples dog poo, it’s bloody gross!
It would be like me pointing to a dirty nappy on the floor and expecting her to pick it up, just because she has a child with her.
Was she BU, or am I for being annoyed that she asked me to?

I’ve handled thousands of peoples poo in my occupation, it’s poo, not radioactive waste, a glove on doesn’t change whose poo it is. Stops some child stepping unit, maybe your child!

Then if the parent of said child is so bothered they can pick it up can't they?

Ah some of this is MN batshittery at its finest.

Have a dog? Thought you were only responsible for your own dog's shit? Think again.

By that same thinking, those people with kids should be changing other kids nappies, making sure other people's small children behave in public spaces....but oh no. MN batshittery only applies to dirty dog owners.

But they do. Looking after children is an actual job. People even do it in real life for free with their own children and friends children and relatives children.

no one is saying OP was legally obliged to pick the poo up. Just that the woman (entirely reasonably) knows OP has picked up more shits than she has, so what’s one more. Plus she has the equipment ie the bag.

Why own a dog if you’re weird about poo, they literally eat fox poo 🤣

Handling body temperature shit even with a plastic bag acting as a barrier is one of the worst things I can think of. That's one of the reasons I don't have a dog.

My cat used to puke sometimes but was considerate in that he only did it in the kitchen. Some will say cat vomit + area where food is stored and prepared is disgusting but I maintain it was very thoughtful - amazingly so for a cat - because the kitchen has a tiled floor and the other rooms are carpeted.

It was okay if I could see it but frequently it was colourless and I would step in it in bare feet and often it was just after he'd done it. Warm cat puke in between your toes. I slipped over a few times as well.

Just to clarify a few things: he was an indoor cat with a litter tray so no neighbours were bothered by his shit in their gardens. I always used to let the shit cool down before removing it with a trowel and disposing of it in several layers newspaper in the general waste dumpster at the end of the street. When I said all the other rooms were carpeted that does not include the bathroom but he could not open the door.

I suspect someone will take me to task about putting my cat's shit in the communal bin but we don't have personal bins and as I said it was well wrapped and the bins are emptied by the binmen fixing them to the dustcart and upending them. I never did a survey on their contents but from the smell I suspect other people put unpleasant things in there too. And where else would they put them?

Like it or not you are a dog owner and with that comes the job of picking up of dog shit. It’s a bit rich to say some dogs shit is disgusting but some other dogs isn’t. All dogs excrement is disgusting to me, it’s one of the many reasons I don’t have a dog. The only truly disgusting one in this the dog owner that left the poo there.

You could have just done it anyway. She could just have done it anyway but you were more likely to have a poo bag. Neither were being unreasonable but likely hood is you’re better at picking poo up off the floor.

I like being a dog owner very much, and you are correct - the responsibility comes with picking up shit.

The shit of my dog, not every dog.

Did she think it was your dog's?

No way am I picking up other poo, I know my dog has been wormed for a start.

Worms can't bite their way through plastic bags so you'd be quite safe!

HandbagsnGladrags · 25/01/2023 15:58

Also, poo bags are available for non dog owners to buy.

Trixiefirecracker · 25/01/2023 16:01

OP, your dog’s shit is not miraculously made of a different kind of gold-coated shit than other dogs! She asked you to do something community minded. There’s no absolutely no difference in picking up one dog’s shit from another. How bizarre that you should think so! 😂

The bizarre thing is that the woman asked.

Trixiefirecracker · 25/01/2023 16:03

The bizarre thing is getting in a massive flap about it. If you don’t want to pick up shit. Don’t do it but don’t make out your dog’s shit is made from something much nicer than other dog’s shit. Actually made me butter out laughing.

Trixiefirecracker · 25/01/2023 16:04

Burst! 😂

BeyondMyWits · 25/01/2023 16:04

I just take a few extra poop bags when I walk the dog and use them to pick up stray poop and/or litter on our walks.

Not exactly a huge amount of effort, and it helps make MY neighborhood a nicer, cleaner place to live.

So I'd have picked it up anyhow, or assumed she wanted a poo bag to do it herself, but wouldn't have cared really.

WFHbore2023 · 25/01/2023 16:05

The amount of people who cannot see the difference in your own dogs poo is insane.

There is a huge difference.

In the same way I will happily hold a tissue for my child to blow its nose in - would i fuck want to handle the snotty tissue of some random child on the street.

Not only that, but I have gone to great expense and spent time researching to make sure my dogs food is right for her - which in turn is reflected in the state of her poo.

I don't want to pick up squishy shit.

Perhaps if she was so 'community minded' she would have been happy to pick up the shit herself

Yabu starting a post on MN about dog poo. It always brings out those kind of people.

Of course you shouldn't pick up after other people's dog's shit, no more than you would take random people's crap to the tip for them.

EvilMorty · 25/01/2023 16:05

It’s not really that bizarre. I would ask another parent for a wet wipe so maybe she was just asking as you would have a bag?

I can’t believe people think dog owners should pick up any old shit. Of course YANBU OP. There was nothing stopping her picking it up either if she was that bothered. It’s not like you have to prove you have a dog to buy bags or put shit in bins.

This isn't what she asked though.

The comparison would be asking the OP to wipe your child's arse with said baby wipe.

She didn't ask for a bag to do it herself she asked the OP to pickup the poo for her.

I wouldn't have made a thread about someone asking me if I please had a spare poo bag that THEY could use

Yeah but would you ask the other parent to wipe your kids arse then bin the wipe & nappy?

Windbeneathmybingowings · 25/01/2023 16:09

not many people are really saying that. They are laughing at the weirdness of being outraged about picking up a poo when picking up poo is a primary task of dog owning.

of course anyone can pick up a poo. Dog owners, you would hope, are cool with holding poo. If they aren’t… well why are they dog owners.

It would have been fine for the woman to ask for a poo bag.

I'd ask a parent for a wipe but I wouldn't ask them to change a shitty nappy

Trixiefirecracker · 25/01/2023 16:12

Why do people compare dogs to children? It’s absolutely not the same as asking someone to wipe a child’s arse! How bizarre! If she had said can you wipe the dog’s arse then maybe, possibly a bit closer! Bat-shittery at its finest. As a firmer nanny and nursery teacher I’ve had to wipe a lot of kid’s bums and can definitely tell you poo is poo, wherever it comes from.

Annoyingwurringnoise · 25/01/2023 13:26

She asked you to do something community spirited, and you did it, I don’t see what the issue is.

I think this. She probably assumed (rightly) that you would have poo bags and hand sanitiser etc and that you were equipped to do something nice to stop children etc treading in poo.

I think she was right too
