To be annoyed about being asked to pick up poo?

WFHbore2023 · 25/01/2023 13:15

I'm going to start this by saying - I did do it. I'm annoyed at myself, but I was a bit stunned.
I was walking along with my dog, earphones in. A woman with a pushchair was walking along the same path, walking towards us.
She pointed at some poo on the floor and said something to me, which I didn’t hear as I had my earphones in. I assumed she was asking if it was my dogs poo, so I just said no. I took out an earphone and she said ‘have you got a poo bag? will you pick it up? I hate it when people leave poo’
I was a bit shocked so just picked it up and said ‘yeah, me too’ but afterwards I was like ‘wtf?!’
In hindsight, I should have just given her a bag to pick it up if she’s so bothered by it!
I pick up my dogs poo, and I happily do it, because that is MY job! It’s not my job to pick up other peoples dog poo, it’s bloody gross!
It would be like me pointing to a dirty nappy on the floor and expecting her to pick it up, just because she has a child with her.
Was she BU, or am I for being annoyed that she asked me to?

I have literally never seen dirty nappies lying around in a public space. I see dog poo on every visit to the park. Are you honestly saying you’ve never missed a stray poo ever?

She's never been able to earn her off lead privileges, so yes, defo never missed a poo

Having never owned a dog, therefore having never picked up ones poo, i'm actually a little oddly intrigued. Doesn't the older, colder stuff end up being drier, so more firm/solid, so easier to pick up without, for a better way to put it, smushing, and smelling worse?

Somebody else's dog's poo always smells worse than your own dog's poo, I guess because we are all used to the smell of our own dog's poos, and because the people who don't clean up after their own dogs are likely the same group of people that feed their dog cheap shite full of additives and allergens and don't see stinky or loose stools as indicative of a health problem so don't address it, so other people's dog's poo is likely to be smellier and less well formed in the first place. At this time of year older poo is more likely to have been rained on or had dew on, so would be wetter and messier to scrape up instead of pic up in one easy piece. I guess if left for long enough in the heatwave of a summer then yes, older dog poo gets drier and less smelly, although before it gets to that stage there's the joy of dealing with the germ-carrying flies who all want their snack from it.

Really? When the bins in our park are full some lovely parents dump their dirty nappies beside the bins rather than bringing them home.

My partner and I often pick up poo from other dogs when we're out walking our dog. Because, let's face it, it's not nice to see a pile of shit lying there, whether you're a dog owner or not.

ThereIbledit · 25/01/2023 15:18

Because you own a dog and she doesn’t, and as collective group you are cause of the problem of dog shit on pavement.

Oh please. It's not caused by the collective group of dog owners, it's caused by irresponsible ones.

just like it's not the collective group of people known as parents who let their children be unruly in restaurants, so it's not any random parent in the restaurant's job to contain the children who are literally running underneath the poor staff's feet while they try to carry trays of drinks and hot plates around the hyperactive brats. It's the kid's own parent's/caregiver's job, and nobody else's.

ihaveopinions · 25/01/2023 15:27

She could have just asked if you had a bag and done it herself really. I'm not sure it's more your responsibility than hers because you are a dog owner... I'm still musing on the 'dog community' argument. Maybe there's something in that.

It's true to say that it's not nice to pick up someone else's dog mess. I'll pick up other's poop if it's near mine (my dogs!) when I'm picking up, partly to help but also I don't want someone coming along and thinking I've left mess behind.

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 25/01/2023 15:28

PMSL like fuck would I have been picking up someone else's dog's shit! I'd have handed her a bag and told her to pick it up herself. Cheeky cow. Who the fuck does she think she is?!

I'd say YABU, what difference does it make picking up your own dog's shit compared to another dog's? Your picking shit up off the ground either way. Personally I'd have just ignored her, your first mistake was to engage with her at all - the point of earphones is you don't have to speak to other people when out and about.

What so every dog owner must pick up any old dog shit because they own a dog 🤣, I mean I think it makes a big difference if her dog did it or not. Do you walk around picking other peoples litter up everywhere you go, you know because it makes no difference if it's yours or not, it's all rubbish.

limitedperiodonly · 25/01/2023 15:30

Sorry @WFHbore2023 I laughed, not at you but by the cheeky cow and the people on here insisting she was in the right. Of course she fucking wasn't and neither are they.

Years ago I went into a shop after school and picked up a bar of chocolate for 20p (it was that long ago). The shopkeeper rang up 50p and when I said it was a mistake he said "all your lot" - other pupils wearing the same school uniform as me - shoplifted all the time and he was sick of it which was why he was surcharging me. I put the chocolate on the counter and never went back.

I sympathise with the victims of petty theft and people who step in dog shit but the solution is not to punish random blameless strangers and no one with any sense would argue it was.

Catspyjamas17 · 25/01/2023 15:33

I don't pick up other people's shit. Not at work, not at home, and certainly not while I'm walking the dog.

Ylvamoon · 25/01/2023 15:33

What a load of BS.
Nobody is responsible for the actions of fully grown adults just because they have the same pet as you.

Loads of people do pick up other people's rubbish though, and it generally makes places nicer to be. When we go climbing we clean up climbing areas, because although we don't make a mess other climbing people do, and it makes climbers in general look bad

Windbeneathmybingowings · 25/01/2023 15:37

Like it or not you are a dog owner and with that comes the job of picking up of dog shit. It’s a bit rich to say some dogs shit is disgusting but some other dogs isn’t. All dogs excrement is disgusting to me, it’s one of the many reasons I don’t have a dog. The only truly disgusting one in this the dog owner that left the poo there.

You could have just done it anyway. She could just have done it anyway but you were more likely to have a poo bag. Neither were being unreasonable but likely hood is you’re better at picking poo up off the floor.

saveforthat · 25/01/2023 15:39

I think she was cheeky but probably thought it wouldn't be so unpalatable for you as a dog owner. I pick up other dogs poo all the time, mainly because my dog will eat it.💩

Having a dog does not mean it comes with picking up other people's dogs shit. Just your own.

This makes it sound like a specialist skill you train in when you have a dog. It's a poo picked up with a bag it's not rocket science to work out how to do it.

I put my degree in shit picking on my CV. Do you not have one?

Windbeneathmybingowings · 25/01/2023 15:41

It’s the dog owners outrage I find most hilarious about this thread.

‘Pick up actual shit off the floor!?! How insane! That’s disgusting! Eurgh! What filth is this that some stranger has left here on the floor.

hang on one moment, my precious frenchie has diarheea.

As I was saying… dog poo??? On the floor??? Heathens. Why would I touch that!!!’

Whilst holding a tissue full of Precious’s inner workings)

Maybe I should put it as a specialist skill. 😉Some of the people on this thread have made it sound like it requires a lot of effort and is something obviously only a select elite group of dog owners can do.

HeddaGarbled · 25/01/2023 15:44

It is a weird thing when you really think about it: all these people walking around with bags of faeces in their pockets. I wonder if in a few hundred years’ time, when dog-ownership is illegal or dogs have been genetically modified not to poo on paths, people will look back and be disgusted like we are now about medieval sanitary behaviour.

Seriously maybe you should. Just statistically a dog owner has held more shits in their hands than a non dog owner. Whether they do it expertly or not. You’ve got the experience, why not work that skill 🤣

If the dog owners you know are walking around with bags of faeces in their pockets you then you definitely mixing with the wrong people.

HandbagsnGladrags · 25/01/2023 15:47

Ah some of this is MN batshittery at its finest.

Have a dog? Thought you were only responsible for your own dog's shit? Think again.

By that same thinking, those people with kids should be changing other kids nappies, making sure other people's small children behave in public spaces....but oh no. MN batshittery only applies to dirty dog owners.

Bowsersfightnight · 25/01/2023 13:18

Ew no! YNBU, there’s something extra gross about picking up another dogs poo, definitely should’ve handed her the bag!

I’ve handled thousands of peoples poo in my occupation, it’s poo, not radioactive waste, a glove on doesn’t change whose poo it is. Stops some child stepping unit, maybe your child!

Floralnomad · 25/01/2023 15:50

I would definitely have just handed her a bag , if I went round picking up all the other shit that’s not picked up on our usual walks I’d have used about 30/40 bags .
