AIBU?

To be annoyed about being asked to pick up poo?

I'm going to start this by saying - I did do it. I'm annoyed at myself, but I was a bit stunned.
I was walking along with my dog, earphones in. A woman with a pushchair was walking along the same path, walking towards us.
She pointed at some poo on the floor and said something to me, which I didn’t hear as I had my earphones in. I assumed she was asking if it was my dogs poo, so I just said no. I took out an earphone and she said ‘have you got a poo bag? will you pick it up? I hate it when people leave poo’
I was a bit shocked so just picked it up and said ‘yeah, me too’ but afterwards I was like ‘wtf?!’
In hindsight, I should have just given her a bag to pick it up if she’s so bothered by it!
I pick up my dogs poo, and I happily do it, because that is MY job! It’s not my job to pick up other peoples dog poo, it’s bloody gross!
It would be like me pointing to a dirty nappy on the floor and expecting her to pick it up, just because she has a child with her.
Was she BU, or am I for being annoyed that she asked me to?

Did you actually tell her it wasn't your dogs?

Yeah. And we were approaching it as she was passing it, so there was no indication that is could have been mine

I'm guessing she probably thought you wouldn't have a problem with it as you pick your own dogs poo up, and she may not have a dog so would feel more uncomfortable doing it herself?
She won't have thought anything about asking you. Like pp have said, she's probably wiped loads off her pram wheel and was frustrated.

I really think it was nice of you to help out a mum who had no dog, and therefore no dog poo bags. Dog poo is a health hazard, especially to young children and she was probably worried about it and so decided to ask a female dog walker for help clearing it up. It doesn’t matter who picked it up, if you want to offer a poo bag next time, no biggie. If lots of irresponsible dog owners are leaving poo everywhere, it might be worthwhile to file a complaint with the council.

I'd have offered her a spare poo bag and left her to it.

I think it was fine for her to ask, if a bit unusual, and nice of you to do it.

Sounds like she asked politely and didn't harass you or anything.

If you didn't want to you could have just refused or offered her a bag.

Well OP I want to say thank you for doing something which meant saving someone from treading in the dreaded pile! Tbh it sounds like you 're a decent person who shouldn't feel bad for anything here.

I agree with pp that she asked you to do something community spirited and you did. No big deal. And honestly, yes you are more responsible for this stuff than non-dog owners. I don’t believe there’s an owner out there who has never, ever accidentally missed one of their own dog’s poos. So you probably owe the community a few freebies 😂

She's possibly seen, as I have on a number of occasions, people wandering along with their dog and not noticing it's pooing (if you've ever seen a trail of lumps of poo on the pavement, you can guarantee it was a dog being pulled along with its owner not noticing). This may be why she assumed it was yours that had done it. I've ben known (as I have a dog, I always have bags in all my coat pockets) to offer them to people who haven't noticed their dog has just done a poo.

Would she be more responsible for picking up a dirty nappy that's fallen out of a bin bag than I would?

Imo a dog owner is no more responsible for picking up someone else's dog poo than a non owner. I'm not a dog owner btw.

That's not true at all. Lots of dogs poo move a few paces forward poo again and so on. It's not because they are being pulled along on a lead that they leave a trail it's pretty common for lots of dogs.

I'll just add, I happily pick up 'forgotten' poo bags when I'm out walking. No problem at all - it's my choice and I don't have to feel the poo.
It's no more enjoyable for me to pick up random poo than it would be for her.

In what way was she right?
Why is it more my duty to pick it up than hers?

Because you are a community of dog owners, it's more on you pick it up than her.

Dog owners cause a lot of misery to people when they don't pick up shit and let them piss everywhere.

I doubt she would have asked a man though, which does make her unreasonable.

I think some non dog owners see dog people cheerfully picking up poo and presume that we like it Grin or at least, aren't bothered by it.

We're not, as long as it's OUR dogs! There is something so wrong about picking up another dogs poo!

We were once walking our dog through the centre of Lytham, and there was a gigantic pile of dog shit right in the middle of the path, that people were hop skipping and jumping to avoid. Just as we reached it, a woman nearby stopped us and asked for a poo bag- she just took it, bent down and dealt with it in a no nonsense way and marched it off to the bin. I was in awe!

YABU

If you're in a position to pick it up (have a pop bag, your own dog etc) you should. There's no point in waxing lyrical about you picking your own dogs poo up and agreeing it's disgusting that people don't pick their dog's poo up. Those people aren't coming back to pick it up.

I believe we should take some responsibility for it as dog owners. If we all picked one poo up that didn't belong to our own dog the problem wouldn't be half as bad.

It's no different to picking up litter and taking responsibility for that.

This. So much this. 👏👏👏👏👏

We are all part of a society. We are all responsible for our local communities. It's like saying "why should I wash up that glass of dh's? I didn't use it. I'll leave it for someone else to do" and meanwhile it's in the way and it gets knocked off the counter and breaks - so at least no one had to wash it up then.

She asked you to do something community spirited, and you did it, I don’t see what the issue is.

This is what I think too.

It wasn't your responsibility but you had poo bags and a dog, so were in a better position to do it than her, who maybe didn't want to get germy hands then need to touch her baby.

To me once you’ve picked up one lot of dog poo, you’ve picked it all up.
I’ve picked up after other dogs on footpaths, even on the prom here ( where dogs are supposed to be on leads so how anyone can miss their dog having a poo is beyond me) Good quality poo bags and it’s no big deal. Can imagine nothing worse to clean out of buggy wheels.

Agree. Dog shit is all disgusting, it's shit. I would prefer to pick it up warm but you can't have it all.

I might be annoyed if the person asking did so with an attitude. Aside from that, I pick up other dogs shit pretty much every time I take mine out. I always have plenty of poop bags so why wouldn't I?

This is bizarre. Why won't your DH wash his glass? Why does someone else has to clean his mess? What does it teach him when someone else cleans up after him?

I don't think it was unreasonable for her to ask if you had a bag. I think she should have been prepared to use it herself.

Good on both of you for sorting it though. My toddler fell over into dog poo that hadn't been picked up and it was smeared all over their clothes. I curse the person who left it there!
