To think it’s time for the Balonz joke to fade away in to obscurity?

Every single thread about names in any context some poster pops up with “Is it Balonz 🤣🤣🤣”. I may be being irrationally mardy but:

1. It isn’t funny, it was mildly amusing years ago but certainly isn’t funny anymore
2. It’s really really old now. Can’t we do better and come up with some new lines rather than relying on this and Pom Bears and Naice Ham for lolz.

Willing to accept if IABU (hmmm). So settle this for me:

YANBU - Balonz isn’t funny and should die a death
YABU - what you on about! Balonz continues to be hilarious and is an absolute classic! Get a sense of humour and a life woman.

Someone (a troll presumably) posted a thread that basically said “having a baby soon and got a few names I like, which name do you like best: David, John or Balonz”

Been around for well over 10 years and remember many of these. There’s such little chance of new ones nowadays, I’m imagining someone posting Lemon Drizzle Cake in AIBU today….

Them days posters were ‘allowed’ to let off steam for an obviously inconsequential topic but one everyone could relate to in a lighthearted way. The pile on was puns or funny retorts. If that was posted today guaranteed before the end of page one the OP would be accused of abuse or some such, nothing is taken at face value any more.

I used to literally LOL at some threads and check in for Friday night drinks. Nowadays we’d all be accused of being alcoholics and a lecture on the health dangers would swiftly ensue.

Pisses me right off. As does the Sistine Chapel reference.

I've noticed posts starting with "long time lurker...pom bears, cutted up pear etc" have pretty much gone. It was so ubiquitous at one point that it totally lost any meaning as everyone knew it even if (like me) you weren't around for those original threads.

The latest seems to be "What's a CF? Oh I thought the C meant cunty."

YABU Balonz will still be funny in a century. It's stuff like this, old Korean ladies in back gardens, Dragon Butter and people finding the skull they put in the dishwasher has dissolved completely, that makes MN great.

I find it mildly interesting that naice ham has stuck around but wanky baskets seem to have gone away.

I’ve always believed that threads are most funny when they’re live and happening.
The dead thread museum known as ‘Classics’ just isn’t the same. I’ve read the Snapped and Farted thread a few times and I just don’t get it. 🤷‍♀️

It was truly funny when it happened. It's one of the very few things that have ever made me cackle on Mumsnet. I laughed whenever I thought about it for months after. Maybe because I'm from near Frensham Ponds.
