Celebrities & Twins

What is going on, 3 “celebrities” announced that they’re having twins. Is this the new must have thing?

I have nearly 4 year old twins and I can tell them it’s incredibly incredibly hard!

It will take your body and your relationship right to the edge. Twins are a total blessing, the relationship they have with each other now is amazing, but honestly the early days I barely remember it, and then the toddler stage came along which was a whole new level of hard.

One of my miscarriages is my twins' "triplet". Ie from the sane batch.
I don't think of them as triplets, but interesting as to whether it's considered from conception or birth (I would think birth - since they had all the bonding time in the womb).

Yes they all had IVF.

It's why there are more twins nowadays.

Agree.

In the those quoted all boy/girl as well, which I suspect may have been selection too.

I have done IVF as have many in my social circle and most have twins as more than 2 embryos were transferred.

It really isn't uncommon and one of the main reasons twins are so commonplace now.

Blendandmix · 21/01/2023 15:16

There's also a woman from ANTM pregnant with twins now too! I'm really shocked at the amount of twins!

You need a representative sample of the population really not just random people from tv

4thtimeunlucky · 21/01/2023 15:27

A friend of mine is an identical twin, her mum was an identical twin and her twin sister has had 2 sets of twins! The twin gene is definitely strong there.

Diynoidea · 21/01/2023 15:28

@Redbushteaforme the biological definition is the same pregnancy and birth

CharitySchmarity · 21/01/2023 15:30

I've known two people who had twins through IVF (and were quite open about it) but I know a lot more people who have had "surprise" twins (I don't mean they didn't know until they were born, just until they saw the scan).

Farmersweeklyreader · 21/01/2023 15:37

I am 20 weeks pregnant after ivf. 2 embryos were put back in, one of the embryos implanted so it’s a singleton pregnancy.
My ivf cycle was nhs, we were entitled to one round due to my age (40) managed to make 2 embryos and the embryologist recommended we put in both of our embryos at once as it results in a higher chance of pregnancy in older women but not necessarily twins.

Blendandmix · 21/01/2023 16:21

@yousmellnice well I'm not going to do an audit it's just an observation 😂

Cuppasoupmonster · 21/01/2023 12:28

Twins aren’t a choice though unless you do IVF and implant 2 embryos and they both take. So finances are irrelevant really. I know what OP means there’s been a ridiculous amount of twin announcements in the last few weeks - something to do with the lip fillers maybe?!

I mentioned finances because OP said how hard it can be with her twins, so more point was having more resources/money means you wouldn’t have the same experience as a celebrity having children than an ‘ordinary’ person would.

It's hyper ovulation, it can only be passed down through the maternal line. People normally get this wrong. Doesn't matter if your dad was a twin etc.

That’s not true. A father can pass his daughter the hyper ovulation gene. If the father was a fraternal twin, his mother would have carried the gene and therefore he can pass it on to all and any of his offspring. His daughter may carry it and therefore have twins, but his son would not influence his partner having twins but could pass it onto a daughter. That’s why it appears to ‘skip a generation’.

I don't think of them as triplets, but interesting as to whether it's considered from conception or birth (I would think birth - since they had all the bonding time in the womb).

I went to an exhibition about twinning at the Wellcome Centre when I was pregnant with my (identical from a single embryo transfer) twins, and was quite surprised that one definition was conception at the same time from the same parents. Sadly only one of those babies made it, but I did go on to have another baby from an embryo frozen in that round of IVF. I still think of my older child as a twin, I don’t really think of his sister as a triplet, but it is quite interesting that they came into existence at the same time (they are very different and not just due to their age).

Confusion101 · 21/01/2023 22:07

@Didimum I was just coming here to reply to the same comment! 😅

Could it also be linked to age? Isn't there a higher chance of releasing more than one egg per cycle in 30s and 40s? I could be wrong though

saturnisturning · 21/01/2023 22:19

Rightly or wrongly I assume it’s Ivf and gender selection.

look at the cast of ocean’s 11. Brad Pitt, George clooney and Julia roberts (all supposedly friends IRL) all have sets of b/g twins. Jennifer Lopez also with the b/g twins.

gets it over and done with a suppose

Mamai90 · 21/01/2023 22:35

MissyB1 · 21/01/2023 12:56

I assume pp meant because the three embryos were created at the same time, an embryo isn’t just an egg.

I wouldn't consider embryos created at the same time twins but there's that family who have identical twin sons born several years apart. The embryo split in the lab and they froze one and implanted the other.

Desertbarncat · 21/01/2023 22:43

Especially if the celebrity is older, even if they deny it, it’s absolutely IVF or some other form of medical help with the conception. Or a surrogate situation.

FearTheWankingDead · 21/01/2023 22:57

catinboots123 · 21/01/2023 13:04

It's grim. Age 40+ celebs engineering multiples to fit their lifestyle.

I guess celeb women only need one maternity leave, one post baby diet and exercise plan etc instead of two if they have twins.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/01/2023 23:53

We have a higher incidence of twin conceptions in our family, from my grandmothers side. I and two of my cousins have all conceived twins, sadly all but one of us lost at least one. I lost twins once and lost one girl twin once, my third child is a twinless twin. My cousin has girl twins, other cousin had the same as me, lost twins and then lost one twin.

It does happen.

KimberleyClark · 22/01/2023 01:08

The number of IVF twins also makes IVF look more successful than it actually is - 8 million babies born worldwide since 1978 yes, but a lot of them will be multiple births and separate births to the same parents. It’s certainly not 8 million couples successfully treated.

Oh i find that really weird. I’d feel like the younger one was a clone rather than a twin

felulageller · 22/01/2023 13:22

Yeah that's really icky having identical twins born years apart. I imagine weird experiments are done on them.

The rate of identical hasn't increased and is apparently not hereditary.

I've never met any.

Cuppasoupmonster · 22/01/2023 13:50

Yeah that’s weird. Just imagine being pregnant with a baby that you know will look EXACTLY like your last one! Spooky.

Confused times have moved on a little since Mengele.

Very rude and offensive that you find having fertility treatment “abit weird” why would you prefer they implant all embryos at once? Why do you think your opinion on someone else’s family is wanted at all?

I don’t think IVF is weird. Having a ‘clone’ years later is a bit trippy because well, it is weird. Even the mother of the ‘triplet’ laughed it off as weird. No one’s being an asshole here. Cool your jets.
They’re all good and that’s what matters. You’re reading way too much into my post.
