Celebrities & Twins

What is going on, 3 “celebrities” announced that they’re having twins. Is this the new must have thing?

I have nearly 4 year old twins and I can tell them it’s incredibly incredibly hard!

It will take your body and your relationship right to the edge. Twins are a total blessing, the relationship they have with each other now is amazing, but honestly the early days I barely remember it, and then the toddler stage came along which was a whole new level of hard.

I was surprised by this as well. I mean maybe it’s just weird coincidence 🤷‍♀️ or maybe there’s some new private ivf type fertility procedure where you can pay for twins…?! No idea.

I take my hat off to anyone with twins. One newborn nearly killed me. 😆

I suppose what I really wonder is, did some go out of their way to try for twins?

I am sure. I don’t know much about the ones you’ve named but I’m sure Mariah Carey etc wanted twins.
The celebrity mother may be older so it might be wise to go for two now rather than assuming they can go again in a few years… They only need to go through pregnancy once and twins generate more interest, publicity etc?
I assume you found twins so hard because you’re not rich and famous with unlimited nannies? In much the same way as I would have more children if I had help galore. Hilaria Baldwin has 7 children quite close in age. She wouldn’t find parenting quite so easy and enjoyable if she had no help I’m sure.

IVF

yousmellnice · 21/01/2023 12:41

What's wrong with having twins? I doubt anyone is going out their way to try and have twins, how would you even do that

Ponoka7 · 21/01/2023 12:42

Alex Reid's partner Nikki has spoken about having IVF. Most celebrities who have twins have had IVF. The sad thing is that women are thinking that they can have babies in their 40's because we are seeing more twin and older births, but for most it won't happen. If it isn't IVF, there's usually been some fertility treatment.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/01/2023 12:44

I have no idea how one might go out of one’s way to have twins. Older women (so more likely to chuck out extra eggs or be IVF) family history of fraternal twins, still breastfeeding… there’s not very much you can do to make it happen. This may be confirmation bias.

doodlejump1980 · 21/01/2023 12:44

@TheVanguardSix I was more questioning your assumption that all twins are ivf. Mine certainly aren’t.

Put two embryos in via IVF?

Especially if you’ve genetic tested the embryos prior to implanting so can have a fairly high expectation of success.

Note how many celebrities have perfect boy/ girl twins.

Of course you can? Don’t most doctors now recommend only one embryo with IVF because the chance of twins and complications is otherwise high? Embryos can be genetically tested before implantation do you know the rate of success of IVF is high. Many celebrities are honest about choosing the sex of their babies - pretty sure Kim Kardashian talked about it as well as Chrissy Teigen. The octomum was implanted with too many embryos - it wasn’t a mistake, she wanted multiples.

HiImTheProblemItsMe · 21/01/2023 12:49

The rate of twins is increasing globally. I read an article on it recently. IVF, people having babies later (increased maternal age increases likelihood of hyper ovulation), use of contraceptives (apparently more likely to have twins after stopping contraception or something). It is a trend generally, not just among celebs. Although I suppose celebs are likely to have money and therefore more likely able to access fertility treatments / IVF.

DelorisVC · 21/01/2023 12:52

I've got twins. They were a huge surprise at my 12 week scan.
I think once you have twins you're so much more aware of other people's twins.
There does seem to be more but I've never actually looked at the statistics.
Anecdotally I would say 75 - 80 % of the twin mothers that I know/knew conceived naturally.

yousmellnice · 21/01/2023 12:53

I thought drs put two eggs in to increase the chances of success.

KellyJs · 21/01/2023 12:54

Well Alex Reid is due to IVF, they’ve documented their journey

The others I don’t know why you think they controlled this?

By having multiple embryos implanted.

If you go via NHS you’re stuck unless older, but if you pay privately you can put as many as you want in (within reason of course)

Newnamenewname109870 · 21/01/2023 12:56

But they very rarely implant two with Ivf anymore so is it really more likely?

From what I saw you’re not really allowed to have two unless have very bad quality eggs

MissyB1 · 21/01/2023 12:56

PacificallyRequested · 21/01/2023 12:36

They're not triplets just because they came from the same batch of eggs! She would have had to have been pregnant with all 3 at the same time to have had actual triplets.

I assume pp meant because the three embryos were created at the same time, an embryo isn’t just an egg.

It’s rare to do that

Dahliasrule · 21/01/2023 12:57

My DD had twins - IVF - two eggs implanted. So yes, IVF would account for some of the increase. However, I think better prenatal care and better awareness of diet etc means less cases of one twin dying in very early stages of pregnancy.

Ah I see

Sunnyshoeshine · 21/01/2023 12:59

I thought in the UK, it was generally against multiple embryos being implanted though? Someone in my office has had IVF overseas obviously because its cheaper but also because she said she was really hoping for twins and they would implant more embryos.

I had ovulation induction and was really hoping it wouldn't result in twins. Personally, i couldn't imagine anything worse given i currently have a 19month old going still going through the 18month sleep regression 😱

Iam4eels · 21/01/2023 13:03

Three people in my social circle have had twins in the last two years, all conceived naturally. Two of them are "older mums" (post-35).

felulageller · 21/01/2023 13:04

The twin rate was 18 in 1000 in 1980 now it's 33 in 1000 and ever increasing.

The natural rate of twins increases with maternal age and number of pregnancies but almost all this increase is clomid (increases egg production and was what Mandy Allwood took) and IVF.

In USA in women over 40 they can implant up to 5 embryos at once. (Remember Phoebe's triplets in Friends?)

The unpleasant side of this that none of the celebrities ever mention is if 3/4/5 of the embryos take the doctors recommend selective abortion to reduce down to 2.

That's why there are lots of twins in celebrity older births in USA.

catinboots123 · 21/01/2023 13:04

It's grim. Age 40+ celebs engineering multiples to fit their lifestyle.

WetBandits · 21/01/2023 13:07

Is this the new must have thing?

Confused

Unless deliberate transfer of multiple embryos during IVF, what would you have said to someone who asked if your own twins were ‘the new must have thing?’ If it started with ‘fuck’ and ended with ‘off’ then you’re along the right lines.
