To ask if schools will close on 1st Feb?

National teachers strike on 1st Feb so does that mean the schools are not open that day?

Has anyone received any communication from their schools relating to what impact the strikes may have?

I would like to know this too. Is there any info about which schools are likely to close? I assume not or we would have heard.

PuttingDownRoots · 17/01/2023 19:49

We had a letter from the school saying they had no information yet as they have to clarify each teachers intentions then work out ratios etc.

CongaLine · 17/01/2023 19:50

I work in a school and we haven't been told anything yet.

Greywhippet · 17/01/2023 19:51

Hopefully they will close.

PuttingDownRoots · 17/01/2023 19:52

Have the Government suggested the Army covers for teachers yet?

Workyticket · 17/01/2023 19:52

Teachers don't have to tell school whether they are in a union, or if they plan to strike.

Coffeellama · 17/01/2023 19:52

It depends on how many teachers are part of that union and choose to strike in your school. Unfortunately you will just have to wait for school to clarify.

AnotherAppleThief · 17/01/2023 19:52

Surely it depends how many teachers you have from that union who are striking? It's not a blanket 'teachers are striking- schools are shut'.

No, but they have suggested that parents and dinner ladies cover for teachers.

I'm not joking.

Teachers don't have to tell school whether they are in a union, or if they plan to strike.

I don’t really understand why they wouldn’t just say when asked by the head though.

ofwarren · 17/01/2023 19:53

Hopefully they will. The point of a strike is disruption.
Good luck to them.

PurpleFlower1983 · 17/01/2023 19:54

Depends which unions the teachers are in.

At our school the headteacher and head of governors have decided, contrary to the guidance, that they will not be covering any teachers taking action.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 17/01/2023 19:54

My Head has sent teachers an email today asking which union they belong to (only NEU member are striking so far) and what their intentions are.

Teachers don’t have to disclose that but Heads are permitted to ask. He hopes to get a letter out to parents on Friday so they can start planning.

Unless all teachers of a school are members of NEU, class closures are more likely than
whole school closures.

Because the point of a strike is disruption.

I'm hearing rumblings of primary schools trying to stay open to children by having support staff manage the children. Can't quite how see how that will work even if they put them all in together to watch tv all day..they'll still have to consider staff/pupil ratios, I guess. Unions will apparently be issuing info/guidance later this week.

BakedTattie · 17/01/2023 19:57

our school has been on strike a few days already. And yes the school closes.
we’re in Scotland

Muchtoomuchtodo · 17/01/2023 19:57

Heads cannot directly ask staff if they’re going to be striking and teachers aren’t obliged to say in advance if they will be.
In reality I think teachers will state their intentions in advance for pupil safety.

This, sadly, is the guidance but many heads will refuse to do this.

I was assuming they would put everyone on new flexible contracts so that ambulance drivers can cover for teachers, at weekends teachers can cover for train drivers and the train drivers can cover for ambulance workers.

Coffeellama · 17/01/2023 19:57

MrsHamlet · 17/01/2023 19:55

Because the point of a strike is disruption.

Not going to work is disruptive though, refusing to say either way is just disruptive to the children. Hopefully not many do that.

noblegiraffe · 17/01/2023 19:57

they'll still have to consider staff/pupil ratios,

The government was very quick to point out that there aren't any staff pupil ratios past the age of 7.

Coffeellama · 17/01/2023 19:53

I don’t really understand why they wouldn’t just say when asked by the head though.

Because they'll be withdrawing their labour in order to make a point.

Woeman · 17/01/2023 19:58

There's not too many teachers in that union. Schools might have to collapse some year groups. The problem will be if the other unions strike.

Coasterfan · 17/01/2023 19:58

Last use my DDs teachers went on strike about their pensions, for 4 to 6 days in total i m not sure what percentage went on strike but the school stayed open, they just did preset work in bigger groups in the hall etc. It’s a small independent school so not sure if this has any bearing but I m assuming schools will do what they can to stay open on 1st feb depending on how many teachers are striking. I have had nothing from DS school about it yet.

Coasterfan · 17/01/2023 19:58

*last year not last use!
