Yet another serious dog attack.

uknip.co.uk/Breaking/News/breaking/woman-rushed-to-hospital-after-attack-by-dog-in-the-street/?fbclid=IwAR3bVa7T5KdsbfMlHZqg8CjSCFIkSVJtGYjB8iAZJ5_2C2Rv4tomNMO1ask

YANBU - ban these dogs (bully breeds, huskies, Dobermans etc)
YABU - aw, poor pibbles, must have been provoked

What do people mean by the term ‘bully breeds’? There are multiple different bulldog breeds and they are not all the same. You can’t lump an XL bully into the same category as a French or English bulldog for example. Calling for all ‘bully breeds’ to be banned is not dissimilar to calling for all dogs with pointy ears to be banned. It’s nonsense.

Don't see anyone walking their cows and pigs at the local park.
Only on private land.

Good point though maybe keeping your dogs on private land would be a good option if you need a dog.

A lot of private land has public rights of way running through it. Some farmland is now "access land" under the Countryside & Rights of Way Act, and anyone can enter it.

I've been chased across a field by curious cows when crossing grazing land more times than I can remember and am quite wary of cows as a result

Many years ago, we were walking in Cumbria and came across an ambulance in a farmyard, and 2 paramedics attending to a walker. We heard later that he'd been crushed against a wall in the yard by the cows who were being brought in for milking. He had a couple of broken ribs.

A few people are killed by cattle every year in the UK, and a farmer was prosecuted by the HSE approx a year ago. He got a suspended prison sentence, iirc.

ArtixLynx · 16/01/2023 14:47

i'd push for legal requirements for all dogs to be leashed/muzzled in public before banning certain breeds because owners can't handle them.

I say that as an owner of a rescue greyhound that HAD to legally be muzzled/leashed on walks as it had been a coursing dog and was at risk of attacking small dogs/cats.

WineDup · 16/01/2023 14:47

JustFrustrated · 16/01/2023 14:44

For hundreds, if not thousands of years, we have had dogs.

It's quite appalling people think that it's okay to murder a full breed of animal...to protect humans.

And then others wonder why we have a climate crisis? The human greed is why.

I don't like dogs. I don't like them around me. Or in restaurants or shops or anywhere else.

I've been chased and attacked by a dog.

I STILL disagree with banning breeds entirely.

One, I don’t support banning breeds.

Two, banning breeds doesn’t mean “murdering” dogs - sterilising them should do the trick

Three, none of these things has anything to do with climate change.

We may have had dogs in general for thousands of years, but the mere existence of different dog breeds is purely down to humans selectively breeding dogs with particular characteristics.

HoneyIshrunkthe · 16/01/2023 14:48

I was walking in the park today and met a man with a huge Staffordshire Bull Terrior.
He was massive!
The owner told me he was 70kg and is a rescue he believes was abused before.
He then, in the next sentence, told me how his young daughters paint the dogs nails but the dog wont let him lift his paw at all…………….
Just waiting on the news 🙄🙄🙄🙄

It's magical thinking - because they want a simple answer, even though neither their breed 'definition' nor concept of breed-based measures actually works

If it were up to me, I'd bring the ban hammer down on posters who post shite like this.

That should be

YABU - breed based bans don't work

The wording of the voting options shows considerable prejudice

I believe that the dog responsible for the most hospital visits, statistically speaking, is a sausage dog…

I have a spaniel and, with the strength of her jaws, I have no doubt she could kill me if she were so inclined. Luckily, she hasn’t demonstrated any indication of aggression and her breed isn’t known for it.

I don’t know any dog breed that couldn’t cause injury requiring hospital treatment.

As the owner of a dachshund, I 100% believe this.

But one of the reasons I chose the breed was that such a hospitalisation is unlikely to be life threatening or life changing because of their size.

I bet it was a ‘pit bull type’ but the owner claims it is a Staffy. I think those American XL bullies and any similar looking dog, and Cane Corsos should be banned. Most fatal bites in the UK are from these breeds.

HoneyIshrunkthe · 16/01/2023 14:55

@GelPens1

True. I have never seen a staffy as big as that - he was so big it made me stop and say “he’s a big boy”.
If a small child or dog ran up to him the park it would be game over.

The thought of young children painting his nails made me feel sick.

Probablymagrat · 16/01/2023 14:57

What are the police going to do? chase down the bad guys with a couple of corgis? Farmers rounding up sheep with a king charles spaniel. 400 sausage dogs in coats heroically pulling a sled across the arctic? And what about guide dogs for the blind? and assistance dogs for the disabled? they all have to have strength and endurance to be of any use. Big strong dogs are a very necessary part of society.

This is a knee jerk reaction to a tragedy, and that rarely makes for good laws. The dangerous dogs act was also a knee jerk reaction, and is not fit for purpose. I agree that a lot of people who have dogs don't understand them and cannot control them. And this needs to be looked at. It is bloody ridiculous that anyone can own a big dangerous animal with no questions asked.

I would go down the route of compulsory training course for the owner followed by a licence to own that can be taken away if the owner allows the dog to be out of control or cause injury. Like a driving test. And it should be paid for by the owner, and be expensive enough to make people think.

Any unlicensed animals could be seized and either rehomed or put to sleep. This could be set up for all new dog purchases or rescues. All current dog owners should be made to apply for a licence, and made to sign a promise to abide by the law. Like the Gtrandfathers rights people retain when the driving licence changed in regard to weight of vehicles you can drive. And it should be compulsory insurance for public liability as well.

Same goes for horse ownership. And I speak as an ex horse owner and current owner of a German Shepherd.

70kg??? I doubt it 17kg it top end of the weight scale.

Either you misheard or your spreading false info

An 11 stone staffy?

So this staffy is 3 stone heavier than my Rottweiler?

Pull the other one it’s got bells on. 🙄

AlwaysGinPlease · 16/01/2023 15:06

@HoneyIshrunkthe You misheard. It would have been 17kg 😂

The utter idiocy on this thread 😩

There is. I believe the rule is 6 at a time but not all the dogs were being walked by the victim of the attack, there was another woman who was injured who was walking her dog and it’s unclear if any other people or stray/escaped/unaccompanied dogs were involved.

There isn't. Some councils have rules on the number of dogs on council property but not all and the number varies. There is no control on land not owned by the council.

Verv · 16/01/2023 15:10

As others have said, its not the breeds its the owners.

dancemusicsexromance · 16/01/2023 15:16

@GelPens1

I have had dogs all my life, I've worked with dogs for many years my most vicious was a Lhasa Apso.
We have a Cane Corso now and a spaniel and my Corso is the most beautiful dog I've ever owned.

I'm well aware of his size (45k) and he's muzzled and walked on a lead for other people more than him. I hire a field 4 x a week for him to play and run to his hearts content. I drove 7 hours to collect him from who I feel was the best breeder of this type. He is gentle and I can play a bit rough with my spaniel but my Corso is very sensitive so he has to be treated respectfully and gently.
I know he is capable of killing but he's been treated with respect and his needs are met and I feel he's safer than a lot of untrained dogs of any breed - his best friend is my 19 year old cat and a tiny toy breed he meets in the park. I can take anything out of his mouth he is easy to train and has beautiful manners. I know what the breed is like and in the wrong hands they are terrifying.

I've seen on Insta or TikTok how they are status dogs - I blame the owners. As I say I've never owned a more sensitive placid dog - I've never even heard him bark

GelPens1 · 16/01/2023 14:37

Interesting that you didn’t mention she had an 11 stone leonberger too. I could fend off 2 dachshunds. A leonberger would kill me because they are huge beasts.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11637121/amp/11st-Leonberger-walked-dog-walker-mauled-death-appeared-BBC-badly-behaved-puppies.html

Interesting.

I watched that programme and that owner was a fucking idiot who - while well intentioned - chose that breed at whim and then proceeded to badly bring it up.

HoneyIshrunkthe · 16/01/2023 15:22

Sorry maybe it wasn’t a pure staffy
He was nearly the size of a Rottie…. big in all ways.

Not false info - just what I was told 🤷‍♀️

Why would you choose that breed though - genuine question. I mean, there are so many other nice dog breeds? You must have really wanted one and I wonder why, knowing how aggressive they can be - more so than many other breeds?

Greatly · 16/01/2023 15:24

I can't understand deliberately choosing a breed that you know you'll have to muzzle. If he's that lovely and gentle why bother with a muzzle?

Could it have been an American XL Bully? If you google you'll see a pic, they're similar but very large. I know I keep posting about them but as a dog lover they are the only dog that would genuinely frighten me if I encountered one whilst out with my little spaniel.

MissingMoominMamma · 16/01/2023 15:28

I suspect very small dogs cause more injuries because people trip over them.

It reads to me like the owner set the dog on the woman. GBH ‘with intent’.
