Today I found out that DP, when buying Krispy Kremes always self scans them as ring donuts even if he's buying the more expensive ones with a filling. AIBU to be outraged?

Yes, it's stealing. Supermarkets work on a tiny markup - it's volume for them. This is no better than pinching a chocolate bar and putting it in his pocket. @Iam4eels you cannot justify it - two bads do not make a right.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/01/2023 20:09

It's a slippery slope, I'm afraid.

Next it will be thumb UNDER the scales at 'weigh your vegetables' in Tescos.

Then before you know it, it's “i wouldn't use the gun in the bank, it's not even loaded!"

It's very similar to the path that Buster Edwards (Great Train Robber #3) trod, with rather unhappy results.

You need to nip it in the bud now, and restrict him to non-self service shops like Greggs and Coombes.

CantPreventSpring · 15/01/2023 20:11

The main reason I wouldn't do this is because being caught shoplifting as a grown adult would be mortifying. I find it hard to get worked up about from a moral perspective. People who e.g. jump out of taxis without paying are scum of the Earth, though.

Sparklingbrook · 15/01/2023 20:18

There's always going to be the type of people that feel the need to do this kind of thing, not because they can't afford the right price, just because they think they can get away with it.
You have to decide whether they are people you want to associate with or not. Or how you'd feel if it was your DC doing it.

From what I can gather it’s scanning anything incorrectly not just stuff like doughnuts. Because the same people are most likely scanning all sorts of stuff incorrectly.
And using their loyalty cards 🙄

Okay but say its linked to a loyalty card/the system and someone sits and combs back through cctv footage, what do they do with it? Have their face pinned to the door so staff know to ban them? Have them arrested? I'm against stealing in any form and wouldn't do it myself, just curious what they can do.

KillingLoneliness · 15/01/2023 20:23

Couldn’t get worked up over it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bowbellsx · 15/01/2023 20:25

Do it all the time I’m going to hell 🤣

CheesusWept · 15/01/2023 20:25

The comments on this post are the main reason why I keep coming on Mumsnet.

That got me I won’t lie 🤣🤣

itsgettingweird · 15/01/2023 20:27

Brilliant thread title.

Krispy Krime

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Not really something I'd do but I'm sure many do and it would cost them more to employ staff than they lose on a doughnut.

From what I can gather it's about way more than just looking at CCTV especially when they use their loyalty cards. But I guess if everyone knew the security systems and they way they work then there's no point having them. This is just info gleaned from a couple of friends who work in retail.

Weekenders · 15/01/2023 20:28

Careful now. Cop loses job over donut theft

BethDuttonsTwin · 15/01/2023 20:29

In RL no one cares about this. On MN there’s absolute performative outrage. Tea Leaf threads are always fascinating on here 😁

Onesailwait · 15/01/2023 20:31

Oh this is just the tread I need to make my Krispy Kreme confession. I just popped out with my daughter to pick up some bits to fix our fence. A local hockey team was selling boxes of 12. We just sat in the truck and ate ALL of them. We've agreed not to tell the rest of the family when we get home. They were soon good.

I think a lot of people care in RL. There's more performative/competititve not caring about theft on MN. I find that fascinating.

So pleased to find that it's a clever thread title rather than a typo. Well done OP! (the stealing is much less pleasant)

BethDuttonsTwin · 15/01/2023 20:37

The Nutella ones are by far the best. And they used to do a lemon ring doughnut just with lemon butter icing on the top, that was good but they discontinued it. Also the Reese’s ones were good too - also gone now. I can take or leave the other flavours.

Wouldn't bother me! Fuck them highly profiteering supermarkets. The owners aren't caring about those doughnuts in they're private jet on the way to they're yacht whilst buying 3 new cars. ( Yes I know a supermarket owner) utter Awhole that earns too much money off of people's needs.

Shitfather · 15/01/2023 20:39

Urrgghhh this is gross behaviour. Not sure I’d ever trust a person who does that. Cheapskate and amoral.
