Today I found out that DP, when buying Krispy Kremes always self scans them as ring donuts even if he's buying the more expensive ones with a filling. AIBU to be outraged?

So @NotSonicTheHedgehog what happens now? LTB or go Krispy Kreme shopping and clean up?

Urrgghhh this is gross behaviour. Not sure I’d ever trust a person who does that. Cheapskate and amoral.

It’s absolutely fine apparently. Everyone does it. Who knew? 😂

In RL no one cares about this. On MN there’s absolute performative outrage. Tea Leaf threads are always fascinating on here 😁

I know someone through work who told me a funny story about her stealing something when I was fairly new. I acted normally. Three years later I don't trust her still. I have lovely friends at work, and I assume she thinks I like her too. I am kind and nice and superficially friendly. But she won't ever be a friend because she's a thief. And proud of it, not a youthful indiscretion.

You may find that people IRL do care, they just don't tell you. Watch and see if they leave their bag open around you or trust you with money.

Are you suggesting I am a thief? 😁

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 15/01/2023 20:50

IRL people certainly do care. We don't like thieves.
Yes, he's amoral. You want the goods? You pay the advertised price, even if it takes the teeny bit more effort of going to a different screen.

powershowerforanhour · 15/01/2023 20:51

"said that supermarkets shouldn't be surprised that people steal when they've replaced paid check-out staff who are motivated to not steal/scan items incorrectly with unpaid customers who are not."

As other posters have said- they're not at all surprised. The losses through theft are factored in and are less than the wages of checkout staff, and the loss simply passed on to honest customers in the form of higher prices across the board.

AgnesNaismith · 15/01/2023 20:52

I once scanned through a huuuuge bag of jelly bellys as standard jelly beans. Didn’t realise until I’d left the shop but remember thinking it was a bit cheap. Tesco stopped having them out as self serve not long after 😳

Of course people care about this in RL. The costs get passed onto me, the consumer and I think why should I work hard and pay for things and then some other scum just steals it. And yeah, it is stealing.

Yes I have heard from a friend who works in a supermarket that security look for patterns of behavious so the people scanning incorrectly consistently may well be being monitored.

I’ve never done it and never will but how would they know?

MrsMorrisey · 15/01/2023 21:03

Iam4eels · 15/01/2023 19:08

If supermarkets are expecting customers to do the job of actual paid staff for free via self-checkouts then they shouldn't be surprised when customers cream a little off the top by mis-pricing items. A little bit of payback for all the jobs they got rid of by bringing in so much self-scan.

Yes! Totally agree.

i guess if we knew that then that would make shoplifting easier.
I get the impression there’s more to shop security than just what we see.
I’ve noticed lately that many shops have installed screens at self service tills though.

Better start baking a cake with a file in it OP. The net is probably tightening around him as we speak....

Its always telling of posts like these that the poster must be on the rob too.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 15/01/2023 21:17

Supermarkets do track that kind of thing (was it Worrall-Thompson they filmed over and over again so he couldn't do the 'oh, whoops, silly me' excuse?)

I know someone who lost their job at a supermarket for saying they were using more 'own bags' than was true, to get extra loyalty points. I think it was 3 quid ish that they'd gained - they'd been monitoring her for weeks to check if it was a pattern.

Sparklingbrook · 15/01/2023 20:41

That’s MN for you. The same people are outraged if their neighbour takes ‘their’ parking space on a street. But will fall over themselves defending shoplifter and benefits cheats. These defensive ones must be on the rob themselves too.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 15/01/2023 19:06

Urgh you’re married to a thief. What else does he lie about and steal?

This.

Could he be having an affair OP?

VladmirsPoutine · 15/01/2023 21:18

I wonder how legal spot checks are in supermarkets? When they just stop people at random and check their goods against their receipts. This would be terrible for multiple reasons mind you. My gripe with shoplifting isn't so much moral but just the sheer embarrassment of being caught 'stealing' a doughnut or some such.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 15/01/2023 21:23

Thoughtful2355 · 15/01/2023 20:39

Wouldn't bother me! Fuck them highly profiteering supermarkets. The owners aren't caring about those doughnuts in they're private jet on the way to they're yacht whilst buying 3 new cars. ( Yes I know a supermarket owner) utter Awhole that earns too much money off of people's needs.

Of course you do.

Which supermarket would that be. Because I can't think of many privately owned chains.

Suzi888 · 15/01/2023 21:24

This place is full of weirdo fantasists. Who don’t understand the commercial margins on grocery retail, to boot.

Wineat5isfine · 15/01/2023 21:27

Well quite frankly, it’s stealing and immoral.

I don’t think anyone should be proud of doing this or similar.

My2pence2day · 15/01/2023 21:27

This is a case of where someone ruins it for everyone else. Costs get built into products to compensate, more security needed etc. All for the sake of saving a few pennies.

Brilliant post title BTW OP 👏

SD1978 · 15/01/2023 21:30

Theft is theft. I don't understand anyone who justifies stealing, or anyone who is happy being with someone who justifies stealing. It's disgusting behaviour, and I'd be pretty pissed and disappointed if I found out my partner was happy to do it

Bowbellsx · 15/01/2023 21:32

Imagine scanning a £8 fillet steak through as a banana

Mammyofonlyone · 15/01/2023 21:38

It's kind of like when people without children park in the parent and child spots. It doesn't cost anyone anything financially but it's just a really shitty thing to do. Sure, you can 'get away with it' but if you're a decent person, you don't do it.

A bit like you can 'get away with' scanning a fancy doughnut as a cheaper ring doughnut. But if you're a decent person you just don't do it.
