People that Say they don't watch TV

OMG so annoying. Esp those that lie.
You do watch TV so stop making out you spend all evening not looking at a screen!
Or those that say they never watch movies or go cinema. You then find out they go twice a year.
Watching sport or netflix counts as watching tv regardless if you watch it on your laptop or not.

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 14/01/2023 23:37

and that it is a moral failing that us lesser mortals actually watching a good crime drama for example.

I missed out the word "enjoy"

It should read: and that it is a moral failing that us lesser mortals actually enjoy watching a good crime drama for example.

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 22:32

But if you got see a film at the cinema, according to OP, you watch TV.

I'm curious as to how she posted her response to the OP as she doesn't have any screens. How can you access Mumsnet without a phone /laptop/PC/tablet etc?

And as for the person who said they don't watch TV cos they "don't have a licence", I bet they have streaming services.

It's just wordplay with the aim of sounding superior. Like many Mumsnet posts really. And as if tinkering on Mumsnet contributing to this thread would be 'better' than watching something - it's all screen time.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 14/01/2023 23:38

@saltinesandcoffeecups 🤣🤣

yorkshirepudsx · 14/01/2023 23:39

@saltinesandcoffeecups But do you claim not to watch tv🫣**

If her eyes don't meet the tv then technically she doesn't watch it 👀🤣

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 23:39

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 14/01/2023 23:34

If it is not viewed on a TV screen, then how can it be TV?

Are you taking the piss?

It's the same show whether you watch it on a TV, a phone, a laptop or a tablet.

It doesn't stop being a TV show because you're not watching it on a TV 🫣

So, if I watch a film that is out at the cinema on a streaming service at home.. did I go to the cinema?

YANBU

people either lie, like @XenoBitch is kindly demonstrating

Or they’re not lying and are insufferable in other ways. I know of a couple who genuinely watch no TV, they don’t have them in the house, no tablets, no projectors, they go off for ‘off grid’ camping holidays and are genuinely a bit annoying.

I also find it weird how there sometimes seems to be a smugness about it, like the parents who only let their kids play with wooden toys, it’s a bit precious

It’s way weirder that other people get so riled about it. I never watched tv, and we didn’t own a tv, and one day a box arrived by delivery — a client of DH’s had sent us one because he couldn’t conceive of a pair of averagely solvent people in their thirties not having a tv. Fifteen years later, we do own a (different) tv, but I genuinely almost never watch it. DS colonises it for Xbox, and then the sound broke months ago (so the sound is ten seconds off the picture AND distorted), and I’ve never got round to having it repaired. I don’t watch stuff on my laptop or iPad, either.

Im not sure why it’s so enraging for other people. We didn’t have a tv for most of my childhood, so I probably never formed the habit.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/01/2023 23:40

Like I said earlier…bonkers but in such spectacular fashion I love it !

Is watching a DVD watching TV? Is watching a film at the cinema watching TV?
Is watching a selected program on Netflix watching TV?
Either they are all the same, or they are not.

Ok so watching a film at cinema, no clearly not tv.

netflix. What are you watching it on. A phone, or a tv. Either way I’d say it was watching tv though but get not technically if it is not a tv being used.

dvd. Bit bemused, I wasn’t aware anyone still watched them really. Dunno, I’ve not watched one for at least a decade since they were made redundant with the advent of streaming services. But no don’t think if class someone watching some old dvd as watching tv.

By that logic - am I still vegetarian if I only eat sausages standing up in the kitchen off a paper towel?

Bubblebubblebah · 14/01/2023 23:41

I can't believe so many avid readers can't get what op and other posters, including me, find annoying.

It's not not watching tv😂 That is not a problem if someone genuinely does other things not watching stuff like tv, iPlayer, series etc on screens.

Tamarindtree · 14/01/2023 23:42

I haven’t watched tv in years.

TheMightyOak · 14/01/2023 23:42

Plot twist - it turns out XenoBitch watches more tv than the rest of us put together 😆

yorkshirepudsx · 14/01/2023 23:42

@Pillowjoy people getting really wound up over this arent they 🙈

I think you have missed the point, she’s saying she finds it annoying when people say they don’t, and clearly do, like some on this thread. You actually don’t, I doubt she finds that annoying.

I don't get charged TV license for going to the cinema.

If you watch a film that's out the cinema on a streaming service at home, you are breaking the law

People that Say they don't watch TV
TigerYiger · 14/01/2023 23:44

TV means different things to different people, just like 'happy' or 'reasonable' or 'important' does.

In my head, TV means live drivel that is 'on' and has start times for programmes and adverts. Don't watch that, screens not tuned into it and I don't have a license legally and haven't for about 15years.

Have Netflix and Prime and a lush screen.

If anyone asks me 'did you see xyz on telly last night?' Id just say no what was it.

Do you watch TV? No, but I do watch films.

I don't go explaining about the license etc, if people are bragging or explaining I think they're likely kidding themselves. Like people who say 'I'm really cool' Smile

toocold54 · 14/01/2023 23:45

I don’t want much TV and so I don’t know what most people are discussing when they talk about the latest programmes.

But if I’m off sick or off on holiday then I’ll often binge watch a series pin Netflix or something and then get rid of it again.

Pirating is a different game😉

Coffeetableposhbooks · 14/01/2023 23:46

Loving this, the I watch streaming services and selected programs, this means I don’t watch tv 😂😂🤣

missymousey · 14/01/2023 23:47

I don't have a TV. Can I say I don't watch it? I watch films on DVD or Amazon sometimes. My kids watch YouTube.

Why do you care?

Haha, I know the meme, but you are behind the times. Films can be at the cinema and streamed now too.

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 23:44

I don’t understand what that’s got to do with anything. You don’t have to pay for a TV license for streaming services as far as I’m aware. You’re still watching TV (regardless of whether you’re watching it on a TV, laptop, iPad, phone etc)
