People that Say they don't watch TV

OMG so annoying. Esp those that lie.
You do watch TV so stop making out you spend all evening not looking at a screen!
Or those that say they never watch movies or go cinema. You then find out they go twice a year.
Watching sport or netflix counts as watching tv regardless if you watch it on your laptop or not.

TV is like the term the hoover is to vacuuming
If you stream you watch tv GrinGrinGrin

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 23:22

Is watching a DVD watching TV? Is watching a film at the cinema watching TV?
Is watching a selected program on Netflix watching TV?
Either they are all the same, or they are not.

Can you even buy DVD's anymore? Yes of course watching Netflix is watching tv. You seem to think because you select a programme to watch that it doesn't count? Everybody selects what they want to watch. You absolutely do watch tv! :)

Chasedbythechaser · 14/01/2023 23:20

But you DO watch tv.
Don't most employed people select a few programmes a week that they'd like to watch and either record them/watch them on playback or watch them when they are on? I do this and would never say I don't watch tv. Of course I do.

Why did you have to make the distinction of "employed" people? What are you getting at, here?

GoAgainstNicki · 14/01/2023 23:28

*I think of "tv" as the terrestrial channels 1-5 you tube doesn't count in my mind nor does netflix because its not "tv" its netflix

I realise how deranged this sounds*

How interesting. I have a smart TV but I don’t have freeview because I have no satellite. All I have on my TV is Amazon Prime, Netflix, Youtube etc. So does that mean I’m not watching TV when I literally am? My understanding of watching TV is watching anything that’s on a TV screen. It’s as simple as that

NormalNans · 14/01/2023 23:28

@XenoBitch I’m wondering what you get out of claiming that you don’t watch TV when you clearly do but perhaps just not on a TV screen.

Zwicky · 14/01/2023 23:29

Annoys me too, OP. You don’t watch TV, fair enough. If you are GLUED to it then don’t be telling me you don’t watch it. It’s botherising because of the snobbery surrounding tv- as demonstrated by some of the posts on this thread by people claiming they don’t watch tv except for all the things of tv that they want to watch, as if other people all flick mindlessly through 500 Channels on their 60inch screen whilst melting into leather recliners, or else they watch tv the way my parents did in the ‘70s through ‘90s - that is to say they watched the news, then whatever came on after the News and then whatever came on after that until the national anthem came on and they went to bed. Incidentally they “don’t watch tv” either, in the opposite way to what some pps have said - they don’t give a shit what is on, ergo, they don’t watch it.
Most things if people do them they’ll tell you, or if they don’t they’ll also tell you. It’s accuracy without a value judgement. “I play golf.”, or “I’ve never been skiing”. Sometimes there is a subtlety “I don’t go abroad on holiday” vs “I’ve never been abroad”. TV, to use a TV example is like Nana Royle not drinking. She doesn’t drink. Except a Sherry at Christmas. But she never drinks. Just a Sherry at Christmas and a whisky at new year. And a bottle of stout. But she never drinks. It’s like saying you never eat meat when you eat wafer thin ham. I love TV. I LOVE film - I’ve got membership to get cheap seats at the “art house” cinema. I don’t care if other people don’t but when people say “Oh, I don’t watch TV” when I know that “I don’t watch TV, I just watch the news. But I don’t watch tv, just the news and Would I Lie To You and QI. And university challenge of course, but I don’t watch it. Just Strictly at Christmas, but I don’t watch it. I watch that Happy Valley. Do you remember her when she was in Coronation Street? And her sister was in Downton with that other fella. And the Bake Off. But I don’t watch tv. It’s on my iPad. Or on the big telly for David Attenborough.” is more accurate then it sounds like you are deliberately minimising it because you think it’s bad. You think what I do is bad like nana royle judges people who drink. For the absence of doubt, I don’t feel this about people who say they don’t watch tv and actually don’t watch tv, or people who say they don’t go to the cinema, but actually have been a few times in their lifetime, or people who don’t watch much tv and say “I don’t watch much tv”.

Walkingtheplank · 14/01/2023 23:30

I find it annoying when TV actors say they dont watch TV. As though they're too superior to watch it - but they say this during the promotional round to convince the rest of us that we should watch the programme they've just made.

Chasedbythechaser · 14/01/2023 23:30

FancyFanny · 14/01/2023 23:24

A television is that actual thing you watch films and programmes on- it's not a specific channel!

Indeed it is. I find it very funny that people are declaring they aren't 'tv watchers' because they watch selected programmes and Netflix as if the rest of the population's televisions automatically turn themselves on!

RisingSunn · 14/01/2023 23:30

I say I don’t watch TV because I don’t have an aerial / license. But I do watch some Netflix and YouTube vlogs on my phone.

So not sure if I fall into this annoying category 🤔

If it is not viewed on a TV screen, then how can it be TV?

AlwaysGinPlease · 14/01/2023 23:30

I know someone that claims not to watch tv. At all. She's watches everything on her iPad. The soaps, quiz shows etc. Daft.

Chasedbythechaser · 14/01/2023 23:32

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 23:28

Why did you have to make the distinction of "employed" people? What are you getting at, here?

People who have limited time and watch the programmes they are most interested in.

You really need to make peace with the fact that you watch tv and its sounds like you watch it regularly too :)

BitOutOfPractice · 14/01/2023 23:32

I think what the op finds annoying is people who say they don’t watch tv or don’t have time for tv or whatever, who say it as if it makes them morally superior. Who consider themselves better/cleverer/superior because of it. There’s a lot of them about. They are deeply annoying.

OnSecondThoughts · 14/01/2023 23:32

I identify as someone who doesn't watch TV, therefore I don't watch TV, clear? Excuse me must dash, Love Island is on....

Winecrispschocolatecats · 14/01/2023 23:32

I watched Stranger Things with my 11 year old because I'd heard it had a few gory scenes and didn't want her to watch alone. Have to say, I massively enjoyed it. Also watched Wednesday with her, just for fun :)

However, as a rule I'm usually either reading or on my tablet playing online games. My husband and son are both totally obsessed with sports and that's pretty much all that's on our TV. So I sit in the same room and can chat to them, while they do their thing and I do mine. And if someone asks me if I've watched X programme or Y film, I'll answer no, I don't really watch much TV. Because that would be the truth. Would you rather I lied about it?

RampantIvy · 14/01/2023 23:32

I watch TV. I like wathing TV. I also have a social life and manage to read books and listen to music.

Often people who say they don't watch TV will still watch something on a screen - mobile, laptop or tablet. I don't think I know anyone who never, ever watches anything at all on some kind of screen.

The only issue that I have is that some people who say they never watch TV seem to impart some kind of moral superiority about it, and that it is a moral failing that us lesser mortals actually watching a good crime drama for example.

yorkshirepudsx · 14/01/2023 23:33

I'm so confused

yorkshirepudsx · 14/01/2023 23:33

If somebody tells you they don't watch tv just let it become white noise and ignore them lol.

emptythelitterbox · 14/01/2023 23:33

I don't have a TV so I can't watch one.

What I find bizzare is people who never turn the damn things off.
If they're at home, it's on.

SchoolQuestionnaire · 14/01/2023 23:34

I don’t watch tv and the only time this ever comes up is with the sort of people who only watch tv so their only conversation starter is ‘Did you see X, Y or Z last night?’. Even though I have repeatedly explained to them that I haven’t seen it (because I don’t watch tv). I don’t mind that they watch everything but I wish they would understand that I’m not trying to be snooty or miserable but I can’t chat about the plot of a show I haven’t actually seen.

This evening however, dh and I have just watched two movies back to back. These are the first films I’ve watched in ages and I quite enjoyed them and the change of activity. But I won’t be making a habit of it and it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t watch tv.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 14/01/2023 23:34

Are you taking the piss?

It's the same show whether you watch it on a TV, a phone, a laptop or a tablet.

It doesn't stop being a TV show because you're not watching it on a TV 🫣

I wonder if it's the background noise? I hate being at home in complete silence sometimes so I put Spotify on and have music playing

That would be me 🤷🏻‍♀️

I find the background noise comforting and it stops my brain going into overdrive.
