People that Say they don't watch TV

Aquarius1234 · 14/01/2023 22:04

OMG so annoying. Esp those that lie.
You do watch TV so stop making out you spend all evening not looking at a screen!
Or those that say they never watch movies or go cinema. You then find out they go twice a year.
Watching sport or netflix counts as watching tv regardless if you watch it on your laptop or not.

I don’t watch any TV, I haven’t had a licence for about 17 years. I do go to the cinema about twice a week, I read a daily national newspaper and I listen to the radio constantly,

Kudja · 14/01/2023 22:15

Umm, we genuinely only watch 1-2 hrs a week (on demand). I have no idea how people have time to watch more. The Childers do watch more (again on demand). We don’t have a
tv (tablets and projector) but I normally have no clue what people are on about when staling about tv. We usually have a series we follow which makes up our 1-2 hrs a week.

when I’m talked to about ‘tv’, because I have no clue what people are on about I will say ‘sorry, I’m clueless, we don’t watch much tv’. Maybe what I mean is ‘we choose what we watch and don’t watch random crap’

the last thing we would choose to watch is reality tv……

Not sure what your issue is, tbh.
I say I don't watch TV.. and by that I mean I do not sit in front of it and keep channel surfng for things to watch. I know what I want to see, and I select those programs and nothing else.
I don't smoke but I tried a fag in my teens. Does that mean I am lying about not smoking?

So you watch TV then…

TheRookie · 14/01/2023 22:17

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 22:12

I watch it on my laptop.. so not even on a TV.
I am still baffled as to the AIBU from the OP.

Pendantic!!! You don't watch a PHYSICAL TV but you do watch TV SHOWS

Aquarius1234 · 14/01/2023 22:18

I was taken a back by someone a while ago saying they don't watch TV or on their laptop or phone in evenings or watch films. Didn't find it relaxing. Due to being on computer all day at work.
Yet a couple of months later starting talking about amazon netflix and some movies they had seen.
I was thinking but you said you don't watch tv/ movies to relax in evenings.
Obviously they do sometimes or more than sometimes.
Why say you never do something..

Am I watching TV if I put a DVD on?

Yes

Are you being funny here or do you genuinely think that by not scrolling to find a program and watching a DVD isn’t watching ‘TV’

lifeturnsonadime · 14/01/2023 22:19

Aquarius1234 · 14/01/2023 22:11

Rarely watching TV would mean you don't stream anything. Other than once in a blue moon. And you don't watch stuff on your laptop eg I player, netflix. Amazon..Channel 4.
And you don't sit and watch hours of live sport.

Yes that’s me. I watched a bit more in lockdown but I just don’t have the time / interest.

Hercisback · 14/01/2023 22:19

I say I don't watch much TV. Average 2 hours a week of streamed programmes. This does fluctuate in holidays. I don't have time for more.

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 22:19

SandyLanez · 14/01/2023 22:17

So you watch TV then…

But not on a TV.
FFS, I could watch all the things I catch up on on my laptop (not TV!), on a DVD. Can buy them all on Amazon. Is watching a DVD watching TV? Does it have to be on a television screen? Does a phone count? Does a TV in John Lewis count?
FFS, why does it matter. This is a bizarre AIBU!

tabbycat985 · 14/01/2023 22:19

I would say I don't watch television but I know word for word every Bluey episode ever to exist... Or does being held captive by small children not count?😆

HappyNewYear2023 · 14/01/2023 22:19

I watch films (not on a television). I probably would say I don't watch TV. But I guess I do.

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 22:20

TheRookie · 14/01/2023 22:17

No, a film.

SandyLanez · 14/01/2023 22:20

YANBU

people either lie, like @XenoBitch is kindly demonstrating

Or they’re not lying and are insufferable in other ways. I know of a couple who genuinely watch no TV, they don’t have them in the house, no tablets, no projectors, they go off for ‘off grid’ camping holidays and are genuinely a bit annoying.

I also find it weird how there sometimes seems to be a smugness about it, like the parents who only let their kids play with wooden toys, it’s a bit precious

OP’s post is ridiculous but so is this. You do watch tv so why would you tell people you don’t?
I don’t think anytime sits and channel surfs for ages in the age of on demand and streaming.

Mushroo · 14/01/2023 22:21

This thread is great. OP says she finds people annoying who say they don’t watch TV when clearly they do. (I agree, because ‘I don’t watch tv’ is always said with a sense of superiority) and in the first page at least 2 posters have already proved the point!

MadameDe · 14/01/2023 22:21

I don't think I watch much. An hour a day in the evenings is what I generally do. Over the past year it's been more. I prefer reading tbh.

newtb · 14/01/2023 22:21

I don't. Haven't got one

You said you don’t channel surf so it doesn’t count

It does

You’re being facetious and a bit stupid

This is like saying you don't eat because you only have meals at set times and never have snacks.

I realised the error of my ways 😄! I actually realised last week, and resolved to stop saying it.

Every night I get home from work and watch 2-4 hours of streamed programmes or films through iPlayer, 4od, Netflix, Amazon prime etc but I don’t own a TV or watch anything live. By your logic I should say I don’t watch any TV even though it’s my main evening entertainment??

I am stupid, but if it makes you feel better to tell a stranger that then knock yourself out.
I don't use my TV, that is set up in my house. therefore I do not watch the TV.

WandaWonder · 14/01/2023 22:23

Shock horror I know people who don't own a tv

Some people don't watch TV why is that hard to understand?

Are you trying to justify something to yourself?

Aquarius1234 · 14/01/2023 22:24

CrocodileShoooooesCrocodileShoes · 14/01/2023 22:10

I don't watch much TV, sorry that my personal habits bother you so much.

How little do I have to watch for it not to count as much? Is there a time limit, or is it only programmes that pass your personal entertainment quota that counts.

90 mins a week.
