People that Say they don't watch TV

OMG so annoying. Esp those that lie.
You do watch TV so stop making out you spend all evening not looking at a screen!
Or those that say they never watch movies or go cinema. You then find out they go twice a year.
Watching sport or netflix counts as watching tv regardless if you watch it on your laptop or not.

@XenoBitch sorry I don't watch tv I wouldn't know

@saltinesandcoffeecups But do you claim not to watch tv🫣**

If her eyes don't meet the tv then technically she doesn't watch it 👀🤣

Ah so what if I'm just listening to the TV - does that count? 🤔🤣

NormalNans · 14/01/2023 23:48

I don’t understand what that’s got to do with anything. You don’t have to pay for a TV license for streaming services as far as I’m aware. You’re still watching TV (regardless of whether you’re watching it on a TV, laptop, iPad, phone etc)

Is watching a DVD watching TV?

missymousey · 14/01/2023 23:50

Aquarius1234 · 14/01/2023 22:24

90 mins a week.

Oh just saw this. In that case, I don't watch TV.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/01/2023 23:51

I think we need the Op to weigh in on some of these corner cases. I’m weirdly intrigued to find out if I’m a tv watcher or not!

I have TalkTV on my radio in the day. No screen, but it is classed as a TV channel. Are we watching it via our ears?

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 14/01/2023 23:51

In the last 11 years I have only ever watched something on my tablet, either through amazon or Netflix. Usually when I'm having a fidgety episode and can't find a book I want to read. This is rare.
Most of the time someone mentions something on bog standard TV and I have no idea what they're on about. My usual reply is "huh, I'd rather read a book"
So where do I fit in to the annoyance level?

BungleandGeorge · 14/01/2023 23:51

yorkshirepudsx · 14/01/2023 23:44

@XenoBitch So, if I watch a film that is out at the cinema on a streaming service at home.. did I go to the cinema?

If you watch a film that's out the cinema on a streaming service at home, you are breaking the law

Not necessarily as sometimes they’re available legitimately at the same time as they’re on at the cinema now.

anything on a small screen is watching tv. YouTube vlogs etc not filmed professionally aren’t tv but anything filmed professionally to be screened is. Watching at the cinema on a big screen is not watching tv.

yorkshirepudsx · 14/01/2023 23:51

@whataboutsecondbreakfast I'd depends so you listen to your tv on the tv or at the cinema or illegally

I am still waiting to hear why OP finds it so distressing and needing to start a AIBU about it all, tbh.

yorkshirepudsx · 14/01/2023 23:52

This is my fave thread in a long time

BigHeadBertha · 14/01/2023 23:53

Okay, after reading all of the OP's posts, I think I get it. Personally, I don't know anyone who claims not to watch TV. But I think the OP knows people who put on airs that they're above "common" entertainment, too artsy or serious or whatever to watch TV, when it's a lie. If that's it then I'd agree because people who put on airs are annoying AF!

yorkshirepudsx · 14/01/2023 23:53

Yes. This is 2023, if there is a tv in your house, even if it doesn't work, you watch tv

Teaandtoast3 · 14/01/2023 23:54

I say I don’t watch much TV because I don’t. Maybe a few hours a week if that. I’m more likely to read a book or play a computer game… so I still do screens because I read on my phone and play the PC or Xbox… I just don’t generally watch many programmes.

It’s lot that I’m anti programmes. I just have to be in the mood to binge watch and not much has caught my fancy recently.

PriamFarrl · 14/01/2023 23:54

Here is a question.

If you said to your child, (imagining that you have a child of the correct kind of age and this is how you parent), that they were grounded and that meant no watching TV, would you think that they had broken the rules if you found them watching Netflix on their phone?

Pillowjoy · 14/01/2023 23:54

Coffeetableposhbooks · 14/01/2023 23:42

I think you have missed the point, she’s saying she finds it annoying when people say they don’t, and clearly do, like some on this thread. You actually don’t, I doubt she finds that annoying.

Well, I was responding to @SandyLanez, who says she finds people who don’t lie, who actually don’t watch tv, annoying.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 14/01/2023 23:55

I watch television and have a television licence. I don't have any TV subscriptions but I sometimes watch things on I-player. I usually have one or two programmes that I'm following at any given time.

yorkshirepudsx · 14/01/2023 23:55

Wait so what if I just watch trailers

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 14/01/2023 23:55

People watching tv programmes on other devices such as tablets/phones/computers are NOT watching TV! they are watching TV programmes/films/sport or whatever on their device, so they are NOT physically watching TV.

People that say they don’t watch TV but use a TV to watch something such as Netflix or use a stream service, mean they don’t watch terrestrial TV!

Suzi89 · 14/01/2023 23:55

You sound about twelve years old

I would be impressed at their level of intellect (dependent on age) to realise they found a loophole

NormalNans · 14/01/2023 23:56

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 23:50

Is watching a DVD watching TV?

I’d say so, yes.

You’re watching a film / programme on a screen.

I guess the reason it’s irritating is because people try desperately to claim something which is patently untrue.

Like the example I mention upthread.

XenoBitch · 14/01/2023 23:56

How can you watch something that does not work?

yorkshirepudsx · 14/01/2023 23:57

On a serious note -
I think some people, dependent on their age etc, classify 'watching tv' as live tv, like aerial channels
