How are we paying to house asylum seekers

Asylumhotels · 13/01/2023 19:50

I saw on the news that the UK is spending several million pounds every day to house asylum seekers in hotels. How are we affording this? Surely we can't carry this on, are there any alternatives?

Sorry if this is incorrect, I only know what I've seen on the news so any further info is welcome

@TooBigForMyBoots not just private companies profiteering - Clearspings sub-contract asylum accommodation contracts to Stay Belvedere, who employ Conservative MP Crispin Blunt. So no chance of accountability anywhere along the line but much more cash for the already-rich.

Thanks

But how is this situation sustainable in the UK

What - how is spending 0.004% of gross national income sustainable? Quite easily. Hmm

@MarshaBradyo Information published by the Home Office is available online, but steel yourself, it’s quite a long document. Hope it helps answer your questions though. If you don’t want to plough through the whole thing, the “obtaining evidence” section is probably the most relevant.

We don’t actually ‘let them come’ though do we? The UK blocks off all legal routes to claim asylum -in indirect contravention of their obligations under the UN treaty. That’s why we have people arriving on precarious dinghy’s.

sst1234 · 14/01/2023 14:50

Net tax contributors pay to house asylum seekers. Just like they pay for everything else.

I haven't had chance to catch up yet but I'd like to point out a few things.

  1. this is not a thread to bash AS, if you read the OP I'm asking about the cost and the use of hotels and if this is the best way

  2. why do people expect everyone to be an expert on everything. I'm being ridiculed just for not knowing things. Well I asked the questions didn't I? At least I'm trying to gain an understanding.

You don’t need to be an expert, but most older than 12 have basic understanding of how taxes work, and how the asylum system operates.

You don’t have to be an expert to possess common sense and a tiny bit of intelligence

Bingbangbongbash · 14/01/2023 16:12

What do you mean ‘there it is’?

Because I don’t want strangers living in my house, I am some sort of hypocrite?

I fully and entirely believe Britain should spend some of my tax money - which I’m going to bet is more than you contribute, given how much you buy into the ‘my life is shit because of brown people’ bullshit - on helping to house, clothe and feed asylum seekers.

Does that mean I want a stranger who has complex needs and likely psychological trauma living with me? No, of course not. I am not equipped to deal with them and support them in the way they need to be.

It would be the same if it was a cousin or a friend in the same situation.

But as you’ve been told, individuals don’t need to open up their houses, because the state has a legal and moral responsibility to spend some of our money on helping those less fortunate.

And that is a really good thing.

Why the fuck should my money go to help ‘you and yours’ instead? I have zero sympathy for anyone who complains their life is shit because of someone else. You won the lottery being born in the UK, so if your life is shit, it’s bad luck or your own fault - not anyone else’s.

My life isn't shit lol. I don't know how much tax you pay but how is that relevant? Are you saying you are better than me because potentially you earn more? Hilarious.

I bet you'd shit your m&s big pants if an AS dwelling was set up next door to you. I'm hibi - I wouldn't want that.

Anyway for the last time I'm not concerned with AS other than the drain on already stretched resources,

Enjoy your life - I do 😁

@1980sfookup would you mind answering my question from 11:57? Sorry I don’t think I tagged you properly.

BewareTheLibrarians · 14/01/2023 18:44

@AdamBible Oh, so they’re not 4 star hotels with all the luxuries and amenities then? Interesting!

Fucks sake, let’s get you and a stranger sharing a room for months when you have next to no money to look after yourself and no way of maintaining the room itself, then let’s all bitch online about how nice it smells.

Fucking hell.

That's interesting, so are we not allowing refugees to find work in the UK?
🤣🤣🤣honestly I can’t believe you don’t know that people who rock up in the uk and seek asylum are not allowed to work. Once you get refugee status you can have a job if you can find one.
if we don’t house them what do you suggest? Send them back to where they are running from?

Well, now you mention it….

I work with asylum seekers (without a security guard though!) so you can piss off with your insults. 😉 I know a lot more than you, as your two posts alone have shown, and if you’d bothered to read the thread you might have twigged that.

Do you think the asylum seekers pay £120 a night? Nope, again that’s been covered in the thread. You probably swallowed some far right bullshit that asylum seekers are raking in the benefits - nope, £8 a week if you’re in a hotel. Also covered in the thread.

Are you not aware that the smartphones and clothes/trainers are often donated or bought by charities? Yeah, I don’t think it’s me that hasn’t got a clue.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 14/01/2023 18:57

woodhill · 14/01/2023 12:43

Do the asylum seekers get put up in hotels in other countries they go through like France and Germany.

No. In France they tend to use disused holiday camps which have tented or cabin accommodation. Germany has a nice line in Sports stadiums . Of course, they abscond vigorously, and no one much pursues them.

have you seen the squatters camps in Rome and Paris?

Ok. So anyone who actually knows the asylum system is a “bleeding heart deluded lefty” opening up the borders to the whole world? Where you get this stuff from? 😂 Do you just assume that because I’m not screaming about people smelling of piss that I want open borders? That is a leap.

Also, sorry to correct you again but the £40 you quoted is for asylum seekers in self catering accommodation, not hotels. Here’s the link so you can check. And maybe check before you accuse people of lying.

HarrietPierce · 14/01/2023 19:36

Thank God for "Bleeding heart lefties" when the far right extremist Braverman is in charge of the Home Office.

BewareTheLibrarians · 13/01/2023 23:03

@woodhill and @BotterMon genuinely depressed to see you both wishing worse/more unsafe living conditions on teenagers living apart from their families. I don’t understand it. Let’s say if 1 in 100 is lying about their age, you’re happy to condemn the other 99 to worse conditions? If 1 in 50 is lying about their age it’s ok for 49 to be housed unsafely? Where’s your cut off? What is the obsession with not seeing young brown men as human?

I didn't wish worse living conditions. I said it doesn't come cheap with the requirements laid out by this particular council (which I anonimised) and asked the question as to their ages as the requirement is for males aged 16 to 17. How are their ages determined?

There is no real need for them to trash the rooms. Staff must be fed up with them

I wonder what the accommodation they fled from is like in their own country

NeedToChangeName · 14/01/2023 19:44

I think the solution is to process applications quickly

That way, asylum seekers who are successful get refugee status, can work and settle in their new community

And asylum seekers who are not successful can be removed from uk quickly

Agrees, local Cedar Court Hotel has been used for this purpose for the last 2 years roughly.
