Best decade for pop is 80's

DS (9) has just discovered Erasure. Loves them.

I told him the 80's were the best decade for pop.

DH hard disagrees, claiming the 60's is better.

I clarified - saying I mean proper cheesy dance round-your-handbag pop, rather than RnB, Motown or Rock - which I would agree was sixties gold.

Who is being unreasonable?

What is normally called pop I agree. Not the best for what would be described as rock music though.

Andy Bell still has a fine voice even now.

BelenaConhamHarter · 13/01/2023 17:30

Exactly - if I had to have one genre per decade

60s Motown
70s rock
80s pop
90s dance

70s is best.

ToWhitToWhoo · 13/01/2023 17:43

I'm with your dh, I'm afraid- 60s were the best! And early 70s.

slamwich · 13/01/2023 17:43

80s the best. Definitely

OoooohMatron · 13/01/2023 17:47

For pop, definitely 80s.

ThreeblackCats · 13/01/2023 17:48

I love the 80’s
Boy George, Madonna, Wham!, Cindi Lauper….

80’s soundtracks always get me bopping but it’s subjective and I can’t fault your husband for loving the 60’s either.

DuchessOfSausage · 13/01/2023 17:50

1970s

HangoverSquare · 13/01/2023 17:50

No contest, The 1960s wins 'best pop decade' by several country miles.

piedbeauty · 13/01/2023 17:52

80s all the way. Fabulous decade for all kinds of music, from pop to rock to goth to electro to funk to R&B to soul to rockabilly to metal. So much choice and individuality!

I love Erasure too. Have seen them live several times.

Always4Brenner · 13/01/2023 17:53

80s my era as a teenager but some cracking dance house music in the 90s from 96 onwards once the grunge stuff had gone. Couldn’t stand Oasis.

Thepeopleversuswork · 13/01/2023 18:01

I think people tend to be quite biased by the era they grew up in and find it hard to be objective.

But not sure I’d agree. 80s was great for pop and electronic music. By and large not so great for rock.

80s pop

This exactly!

PinkiOcelot · 13/01/2023 18:04

I loved the 80s.

lot of great indie music from the 80s too. But I agree not great for rock, more about the hair than the music. Grunge was a reaction to all that stuff

woodhill · 13/01/2023 18:08

I love both decades plus the 70s

IntentionalError · 13/01/2023 18:09

I was born in the 70s and would vote:
1, 70s
2, 80s
3, 60s
4, 90s

Big gap

5, 10s
6, 00s

Rockbird · 13/01/2023 18:13

80s definitely. I love punk and new wave though so very fond of the late 70s but overall the 80s takes it.

IamEarthymama · 13/01/2023 18:34

The 80s were incredible! 💖💖💖
I am first up on the dance floor when the 80s are playing!

I had so much fun, dressing up In wonderful clothes, dancing to brilliant singers and bands.
Great nights out with fantastic friends. Some incredible memories of tremendous gigs.

200 best 80s music

I loved Bronski Beat, Communards, Echo and the Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, but my heart belonged to Deacon Blue in the latter years.

Beancounter1 · 13/01/2023 21:17

70s had the most variety - not just rock (glam, prog, metal, etc), but also disco, reggae, easy-listening, even country. The charts had a bit of everything.

80s for dance music, and of course early rap.
60s for the type of classic fun pop that still fills the floor at family DJ parties

KangarooKenny · 13/01/2023 21:19

I was listening to rock in the 80’s, and still am.

BeanCounterBabe · 13/01/2023 21:25

YANBU. 80s synth pop is the best although I love other genres from other decades. I was 16 in 1990 so that was my decade really but I love Erasure, Communards, Wham, Aha, Human League, Soft Cell, Spandau Ballet, Adam and the Ants, Bow Wow Wow, Depeche Mode to name a very few.

5128gap · 13/01/2023 21:28

80s without doubt. I listened to Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Japan, Human League, Fun boy 3, Yazoo, Echo and the Bunnymen, and loved a dance to Wham, Madonna, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Whitney.

girlfriend44 · 13/01/2023 21:28

Everyone thinks the era that they grew up in the best.

Bonjovispyjamas · 13/01/2023 21:29

Of course the 80s were the best, absolutely no contest.
