Wearing hats indoors at Work.

This has probably been covered before.
But in this day and age is it ok to wear hats in the office/ work environment.
Or just in general like in restaurants, cinemas etc.
Would you judge someone that started wearing a hat to work. Regardless of the weather.?

We aren’t allowed to, it’s in breach of our dress code. There would be an exception for religious headwear or something someone needed to deal with a disability

@greeneyessparksfly is he Jay Blades? He always wears a natty flat cap.

I suppose it depends how you style it.

I used to work with an incredibly stylish woman who had very fine / easily-damaged hair and always covered her head, whether it was a beret at a jaunty angle or a silk scarf tied in a funky way.

For me, I don't like people wearing baseball caps indoors - I think it's because it makes it difficult for me to see their face and eyes. I do, however, rely heavily on people's facial expressions to 'read' them and I appreciate that's my problem

As PPs have said, if you're looking to protect your hair, then curly product companies such as Only Curls and Curlsmith do silk-lined beanies and suchlike which could be an option?

I used to wear a beret at work in my last job.

I was beaten to the onion sales reference.
So I’ll be sensible and guess Army

I worked with an officer who used two berets.
With the army dress code being to remove berets/caps indoors if there was a beret on the side of a desk then it implied that person was away from their desk but still in the building

If he was up to something, like sneaking off doing personal stuff he would leave his spare beret on his desk.
Once you were in the know you could recognise:

Regular well shaped beret on desk = he’s nearby
Faded old beret on desk = he’s gone skiving
No beret on desk = he’s gone to another building and is working

Certain jobs yes others no.
Air steward - yes
Butcher - yes
Factory worker handling food- yes
Scaffolder- yes
Concierge- yes.
In fact smart hat that is part of the uniform and is in the same colour- fine.
Baseball cap wore with Quite scruffy/casual clothes -no.
Same for hood up indoors-no.
Would you feel perfectly fine if your child’s teacher greeted you wearing a hoody with the hood up and sat like this throughout parents evening. That’s the standard I’d base it on.

Ok what type of hat?

A beanie style hat

Tomikka · 11/01/2023 13:17

Personally I’m old fashioned that hats come off when going inside, but in office it may stay on my head until I get to my desk or will stay on in a supermarket

Im not a regular hat wearer, so would be a beanie in the cold, perhaps a baseball cap* - but not really these days, and some hats for styles of outfits

I help out with traders at events, one of which sells hats - so would be wearing hats

  • I used to wear one of the most chavvy baseball caps driving in bright sunlight. Children would complain when I turned it because I’d be ‘wearing it wrongly’, and would huff & puff as I kept turning it No - that’s the direction that the sun is shining in my eye so that’s the direction I’m pointing the peak

Back in the day everyone had a hat I’m talking my grandmothers day , but you absolutely had to take it off when in doors .
I suppose the only reason you wear a hat indoors is for reasons such as religious, protective ( building site) or for reason such as hair loss .
unless you have lost all your hair the hat kinda draws attention to yourself so if it’s purely for self conscious reasons I wouldn’t wear the hat indoors .

RambamThankyouMam · 11/01/2023 13:45

I'd probably think they were religious.

otherusername · 11/01/2023 13:51

I think it depends on several factors- what your job is, your workplace dress code (both formal written dress code and the general 'vibe'), the type of hat and how it fits in with the rest of your outfit. E.g beanie with a flannel shirt, jeans and trainers in a casual/trendy tech/media office for a creative role is probably fine, a straw boater with a corporate suited and booted style outfit in a law firm probably not so much.

Not in the office. Different if you work in a warehouse.

Depends on the office and the dress code really. I've worked in offices where its hoodies, jeans etc and my beanies/baseball caps were not out of place and I wasnt the only one wearing them.
