Wearing hats indoors at Work.

Aquarius1234 · 10/01/2023 22:40

This has probably been covered before.
But in this day and age is it ok to wear hats in the office/ work environment.
Or just in general like in restaurants, cinemas etc.
Would you judge someone that started wearing a hat to work. Regardless of the weather.?

OP posts:

Unless the hat has an offensive slogan, wearing it can't possibly meet any rational persons definition of rude. To merely parrot that something is 'rude' without being able to articulate why its offensive (and no one has) isn't very bright.
It may be contrary to the social norm/dress code of the place of work, but given the valid reasons people may wear head coverings, medical conditions, religious reasons included, I'd imagine any policy could be challenged.
Ironic that people think wearing a piece of clothing that has no impact on anyone else is 'rude' but that judging people and calling them names for it is fine.

OrdinaryAva · 11/01/2023 07:29

When I worked in construction we wore our hard hats most of the time.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/01/2023 07:33

I have to wear a hard hat, and have been known to wear a beanie in a chilly site cabin.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/01/2023 07:38

I think the Pope wears one. I'm not sure what sort, can't see a peak so I assume he wears it backwards, as is the fashion these days.

lottie2888 · 11/01/2023 07:42

You should definitely just speak to a manager. I think there is a huge difference between being self conscious about thinning hair and just wanting to wear a hat.
tbh if there is no uniform policy I can’t see why it makes a difference.
Also I suppose what type of hat you wear- I guess if you turn up in an enormous sombrero people might judge.

Uglyfacebeautifulvoice · 11/01/2023 07:48

DC’s primary teacher wears a baseball cap everyday, including inside the classroom. I’m a bit 🤔 about that but no one else seems to mind. I’d say it’s your business to ask management perhaps.

I used to wear a beret at work in my last job.

Onion seller?

We have a guy at work who wears a flat cap, it’s quite a formal office. His outfits always look smart, I thought it was a bit odd at first to wear a hat in the office but only because I think of hats to be worn outdoors but we are all used to it now. It suits him, clearly he likes wearing it, doesn’t make him any less professional in his approach to work and most importantly it is doing absolutely no harm to anyone!

Laquila · 11/01/2023 07:57

I think the Victorians/Edwardians used to think it was rude to wear a hat indoors but we've come a long way from pointless social conventions around how people are expected to look with no regard for individuals or circumstances (albeit we haven't left them behind completely...) - it sounds pointlessly archaic, IMHO, to say it's rude to wear a hat indoors. The reality is, though, OP, no-one here can know how out of place it might look in your own work environment, but that doesn't really matter - if you need/want to wear one and are nervous, speak to HR/a colleague for advice.

phoenixrosehere · 11/01/2023 08:03

No because it’s none of my business nor would I care that they’re wearing an extra piece of clothing. Why would I? If they’re wearing a hard hat in an office, I’d be curious and maybe ask if there was some type of construction planned around them but other than that I would just think that that’s their style. As long as they’re doing their job, why should it matter?

It’s odd to me people actually care about such things when there is zero impact on them other than they don’t like it. Don’t do it then and myob.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 11/01/2023 08:05

I wear a hat to work but I'm a dog walker so I'm never really indoors.

That said, if I was going from walking all day to a meet-up with a client I wouldn't take the hat off as my hair would be a right state underneath.

MarmiteCoriander · 10/01/2023 23:19

OP- so you are saying that people that prefer/need to wear hats for their work have scalp conditions???

Do you have a hat fetish OP? Your post is making no sense at all!

I think there used to be a theory that wearing a hat all the time contributed to or exacerbated hair loss.

StillWantingADog · 11/01/2023 08:20

Seen some baseball caps in our office.
anything else would be a bit odd

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/01/2023 08:23

@Aquarius1234 I'm a train driver. So technically inside 😊 hats are not frowned upon here 😂

Mabelface · 11/01/2023 08:23

I wear a beanie or headscarf. I'm not a twat in a hat.

Chwo · 11/01/2023 08:25

Aquarius1234 · 10/01/2023 22:48

Ok cool. Does it affect your condition wearing a hat all the time ?

No it doesn't affect it for me.

HoppingAndHoping · 11/01/2023 08:49

No to baseball hats.

Yes to woolly hats in the cinema etc. Work = I would assume that you were feeling a bit under the weather or hadn't slept well.

Dotjones · 11/01/2023 08:53

No to hats indoors unless you're making a point about the office being so cold you need one. However you should be making this point by wearing a thick coat/scarf/gloves before you resort to a hat, the hat only goes on if there's no reaction to the former garments.

notacooldad · 11/01/2023 08:54

I work for a local authority.
At least two blokes in our office regularly wear baseball caps virtually all the ti.e. I cant think when I last saw them without it , if ever.
I know they are very insecure about thinning hair.
Our dress code us very informal. There are some rules such as no football shirts, no short shorts but apart from that most things are ok, even Sliders.

TerraNostra · 11/01/2023 08:57

That’s hilarious- this is the add that appeared for me in the middle of the thread! Algorithms are astonishing.

if Cerys Matthews can wear a hat to MNHQ OP…

AndyWarholsPiehole · 10/01/2023 23:38

Why?

It gives the impression that you can wait to leave where you are/ get away from those around you or trying to disguise who you are. It's very strange behaviour.

Utter rubbish.

I often wear a beanie at work. It gives the impression that I have a cold head. That's all.

AuldBaldie · 11/01/2023 10:53

Don't know why @Aquarius1234 didn't mention the "condition" (alopecia?) earlier in the thread. Posters might have helped with suggestions of style of hat depending on pattern of hair loss and hair type.

BunchHarman · 11/01/2023 11:05

I often wear a style-only hat to work. A fedora, a beanie or a beret. But I do work in a creative environment. It’s full of posh meeeeeja types and fashion statements seem to be high on everyone’s agendas.

boboshmobo · 11/01/2023 12:32

Caps ok but not wooly hats , not sure why but it would be odd I think .
I have curly hair and get hat hair so if I've committed to a cap I can't take it off mid day!
