Wearing hats indoors at Work.

This has probably been covered before.
But in this day and age is it ok to wear hats in the office/ work environment.
Or just in general like in restaurants, cinemas etc.
Would you judge someone that started wearing a hat to work. Regardless of the weather.?

I'd find it a bit odd unless we're talking hipster creative types or tech companies. Outdoor hats in winter I wouldn't bat an eye but would usually expect to see them taken off unless it was cold inside.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 10/01/2023 23:37

I wear hats at work.... my own retail outlet.....but I have my own specialist niche image ..... in fact I wear hats all the time, a variety of styles..... most often a pointy one though .....

AndyWarholsPiehole · 10/01/2023 23:38

Why?

It gives the impression that you can wait to leave where you are/ get away from those around you or trying to disguise who you are. It's very strange behaviour.

Can't wait*

So is your issue that you have to wear a hat outside and then you get hat hair and don't want to rake it off inside?

If so try a silk lined baseball cap, it will case less hat hair

Oh right. I've never seen those before.
I have hair loss. But managed to get away with it previously.

You should definitely wear a sombrero… bonus points because they are wide brimmed to keep the sun off outside. Double bonus points if it has the little balls on the brim.

(Sorry, but maybe step away from the wine and hat collection for a bit, this thread is batshit crazy)

In which case it might still be worth trying one with a silk lining then. Have a look at websites aimed at women with curly they tend to wear them to prevent hair breakage and stop hat hair. I think if you see concerned about wearing a hat making hair loss worse silk would potentially mitigate that, plus keep your head cooler when it's hot.

Ultimately if you have hair loss and you want to feel more comfortable I would have a word with your manager about wearing a hat. It's a rather different reason to wearing one because you feel like it.

Alternatively have you considered a wig? Not that you should have to, it's also totally okay to not want to cover up hair loss or to wear a hat. But over the years on here I've seen posts from a few women with hair loss who have got fed up of feeling self conscious or trying to arrange their hair carefully to hide hair loss and feel relief from wearing a wig. A very personal choice though I appreciate.

(apologies if you are not a woman and I have assumed wrong)

Wearing a hat when not outside is incredibly rude.

Please explain how it is rude and to whom.

I think a hat is just a hat.

You need to stop projecting your insecurities - I'm sure not everyone is trying to get away from you.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 11/01/2023 00:07

I'm very much of the why would you wear a hat or have a hood up inside (although hat hair...)
I mentioned it to one of the young guys in our office (late 20's) about his intern wearing one and it's potential inappropriateness and he said he wasn't fussed as long as he was doing his job & I couldn't argue with that.
Generational thing I guess.

What an odd reply. Nothing to do with insicurity, I just recognise that it's rude.

A tech guy in his 40s at my work wears a baseball cap. I hate it.

I'm a hat person but outdoors! It's hard to out into words why - just seems wrong!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 11/01/2023 01:39

I worked until recently in offices. Even in the architectural practice I worked for, where jeans were commonplace, nobody wore headgear. And obviously no way in the other, corporate, environments I worked in.

I don't understand why anyone wears a hat indoors. So many American men who wear baseball caps in their own home or in restaurants - why? Are their heads permanently cold?

EBearhug · 11/01/2023 01:55

Tech. At least one bobble hat. A few beanies. Don't remember any baseball caps, but wouldn't be surprised to see one. Also various hijabs and turbans. And a few hoodie with hoods up.

QueenSmartypants · 11/01/2023 01:57

Traditionally, it's ok for women to wear hats inside but men should remove them. This is because a lady's hat forms part of her outfit whereas a gentleman's...doesn't.

Ericaequites · 11/01/2023 02:04

Hats in an office are only appropriate when required by your faith.

DomesticShortHair · 11/01/2023 06:35

Aquarius1234 · 10/01/2023 23:29

Sounds different.

Not really. Most of us did. Or brimmed hats.

Coffeecreme · 11/01/2023 06:43

wearing a hat indoors is rude?
but if you go to a wedding you keep it on all the time

BarbiesWorld · 11/01/2023 06:52

Before I switched to wigs 24/7 I used to wear hats fairly regularly to work in an office (I have trichotillomania and very noticeable bald spots).

One person mentioned it once and I told them I had hair loss and it was never mentioned again. Used to style them as part of my outfit.

Crack on OP.

hattie43 · 11/01/2023 06:54

No hats but I'll raise you a fascinator

Lost123454 · 11/01/2023 06:55

Cap = chav

LlynTegid · 11/01/2023 07:03

I'd think it unusual or wonder if the person suffers from the cold.

DottieUncBab · 11/01/2023 07:15

Casual office like mine absolutely fine :) we have on slightly eccentric guy who wears a hat all the time and once even a bowler hat! In check that matches his suit! (Should caveat it was his choice to wear a suit - I normally just wear leggings and long top!)

MajesticElephant · 11/01/2023 07:26

They are specially banned in my office dress code. Not sure what happened for them to think they needed it as a specific clause but there you go! I happily wear hats inside as part of an outfit - such as a slouchy beanie or a beret.I have very thin hair and bald spots so it works for me as my head can get cold!
