How to get into black coffee?

marathonrunn · 10/01/2023 09:55

I am on a diet and really want to get into black coffee. It will give me energy without the calories although I don't like the taste. I can drink it but I don't really enjoy it. Is the answer to this to just continue to drink it until I learn to enjoy it or is it an acquired taste?

I like black coffee , I’m a bit of a pleb though , and prefer instant
However, it has to be Gold Blend 9 , ( not 7 , very specific ) and quite strong
A heaped teaspoon and a bit more in a nice mug
Try that ☕️

Hello is this nescafe gold blend? I didn't know they had numbers.

QuinkWashable · 10/01/2023 14:40

I drink it cold over ice (I started with a squidge of condensed milk in it, but don't bother with that any more) - I've not tried heating it TBH, I guess I'll give it a go zapping it in the microwave tomorrow and see how it tastes!

Cold, it tastes kinda.. dunno.... more - fuller, some how - with less bitterness. I wouldn't say it tasted chocolaty as I've heard it described, but perhaps I'm just using the wrong ground coffee.

TightFistedWozerk · 10/01/2023 14:45

Thank you, that is an interesting answer. I hadn't really thought of coffee being a cold drink apart from super sweet iced coffee.

Johnduttonsbuttocks · 10/01/2023 14:48

This is why espresso martinis are so nice.

Speedweed · 10/01/2023 14:49

If grinding beans etc is not your bag, what about trying something like azera or nescafe roastery - instant, but made from ground coffee so the coffee taste is stronger. Instant is pretty weak drunk black, so these are a good halfway house.

Avoid coffee machines that need pods - terrible for the environment.

Have you tried drinking black tea?

Would getting something like this make it taste better as yes, I am drinking instant coffee. And if so what coffee should I get for that machine?

I love coffee and never let instant pass my lips. I use a similar machine to picture, making small amounts as i need it to be fresh! I'd actually rather use a filter pour-over as these auto shower machines don't really make hot coffee, but I'm clumsy and have broken too many carafes. I don't use a cafetière because of the mess, I like using the paper filter because it's less bitter and easy to dispose of the grounds. The tiniest smidge of salt in ground coffee kills the bitterness removing the need for sugar. You can get used to black by adding water to your mug or weakening the brew. I'm wondering why you find milk tastes sweet? That only happens to me with uht milk (which I would choose only in dire straits).

Have you tried drinking black tea?

I find that worse and doesn't curb appetite

You get used to it. I can't drink milky coffee at all now.

Upside to coffee is it helps my adhd brain 😁

But definitely ditch the instant stuff

oudie · 10/01/2023 15:00

Trying to force yourself to like black coffee to suppress your appetite is ridiculous. I'm sorry OP but if you eat a good and balanced diet you shouldn't be feeling hungry and if you do a healthy snack is much better than a coffee you don't even like.

Blueuggboots · 10/01/2023 15:04

The tiny amount of milk you'll consume in coffee really won't have an impact on your calories. If necessary, allow yourself a measured amount of milk.

astarsheis · 10/01/2023 15:07

A good quality coffee and not too strong to start with 😉. Once you go black you never go back

I know what I'm doing, thank you for your advice though.

I really struggle to see how a splash of milk can add to the overall daily calorie intake, but since the OP is really determined, I find coffee from an espresso machine with its natural coffee creme (is it called crema?) much tastier and nicer looking than outright filter black coffee

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/01/2023 15:18

I switched to black coffee by first giving up dairy and switching to almond milk. Almond milk was so repulsive in hot drinks that I switched to black. It definitely helps to have nice coffee. If I’m at work and they have cheap instant it’s like drinking gravy.

Well I never! I must be the world's least observant person, thank you.

Make sure the coffee you drink is decent. None of that instant crap. Good coffee doesn't need anything adding
