How to get into black coffee?

marathonrunn · 10/01/2023 09:55

I am on a diet and really want to get into black coffee. It will give me energy without the calories although I don't like the taste. I can drink it but I don't really enjoy it. Is the answer to this to just continue to drink it until I learn to enjoy it or is it an acquired taste?

As soon as I taste something sweet it just ups my cravings.

Go decaff.

I had a fitness tracker, which was only inadvertently tracking my sleep. I was getting 8h, but a terrible balance of deep/light sleep.

I gave up tea during the day, and the deep sleep increased massively.

Sleep affects the production of leptin and ghrelin, which regulate your appetite.

Skipping the tiny number of calories in a little bit of milk is totally meaningless next to using good sleep to help regulate your appetite.

CreepyPasta · 10/01/2023 10:44

Tiny pinch of salt, takes the bitterness away

fairislecable · 10/01/2023 10:51

a cafetière is the best way to go, as simple as making a pot of tea.
You can get double walled ones which keep it warm for the second cup in glass or stainless steel.

I gave up milk in coffee as part of a diet plan and now have the first cup black and the second one has a splash of double cream. The cream has less sugars than milk or so I am lead to believe.

get an espresso machine those machines are gross. Apparently stevia is good for sweetening i keep forgetting to buy it. how many calories are there if you put a splash of skimmed milk in your coffee?

SheWoreYellow · 10/01/2023 10:59

Yes to a cafetière. Or a drip thingy and filter papers.

Then you just need some coffee. Try a medium ish one and make sure it’s the smoother arabica beans.

I mix decaff and caff in my cafetière 🤣

wineymummy · 10/01/2023 11:00

Does it really make that much difference with milk? I am doing 16:8 (eating 1pm-9pm) but still have one white coffee in the morning - the splash of semi skimmed milk is so low in calories that I don't think it affects the fast - I've read anything less than 50 cals is fine. (Obviously a huge latte is a different story.)

It's not cheap but an espresso machine gives a really nice 'crema' - the foamy brown bit. I make my coffee using the Delonghi Dedica, top up with boiling water from the kettle, splash of milk - mmm. We use Lavazza ground espresso coffee as the grind is perfect for the machine.

Nudity · 10/01/2023 11:03

As mentioned a pinch of salt.

I heard letting it cool to room temperature works too.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 10/01/2023 11:06

How much milk are you drinking that it will make that much difference to your calorie intake though?

marathonrunn · 10/01/2023 13:34

Does decaf stave off hunger?

Add a tiny pinch of salt, honestly game changer.

I will try that

BertieBotts · 10/01/2023 13:37

Those machines are meant for making multiple cups so no good if you just want the one cup.

We have a Tassimo which is good for single cups. Some of the pods come with milk/sugar but some of them are just black coffee and it tastes really good IMO. I like black coffee though. I even drink instant although this is much better!

If you don't want an expensive machine with specific pods then a cafetiere is good for making a single large cup of black coffee.

BertieBotts · 10/01/2023 13:38

Espresso machine?? OP didn't say she was made of money Grin

Does decaf stave off hunger?

Yes, works for me

Veryfishy · 10/01/2023 14:01

I like black coffee , I’m a bit of a pleb though , and prefer instant
However, it has to be Gold Blend 9 , ( not 7 , very specific ) and quite strong
A heaped teaspoon and a bit more in a nice mug
Try that ☕️

Johnduttonsbuttocks · 10/01/2023 14:03

The only palatable coffee is ground coffee, not instant. We drink it black and it was easy enough switching (I did it years ago when I was doing Atkins).

Instant coffee literally gives me a headache and nausea.

EyesOnThePies · 10/01/2023 14:08

OP - get a cafitiere. www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/cutlery-44/home-black-plastic-cafetiere-8-cup

OneTC · 10/01/2023 14:12

Acquired taste does just mean one you've got to work at. So yes it is an acquired taste.

Once your brain starts to associate the caffeine reward with the taste then you'll start to like it

OneTC · 10/01/2023 14:13

OP rather than the dripolater I'd get a V60 pour over.

BarryK3nt · 10/01/2023 10:02

Why don’t you try it with unsweetened almond milk? Barely any calories in it.

I use this, and it provokes no insulin response unlike milk

DameHelena · 10/01/2023 14:20

Black instant coffee is going to be vile. Make your own. You could try going to a good cafe that also sells bags of the coffee they serve, ask for a black Americano or filter or whatever and see if you like it, then buy the coffee. Some cafes have 'guest' coffees too, so you could try some different ones. And staff in a decent cafe will be knowledgeable, so if you have one and tell them e.g. 'It's too acidic' or 'It's a bit cloying' they'll be able to advise you of one that's more to your taste.
I do realise this involves time and outlay in buying a few coffees out, but it's an investment in finding one(s) that you really like.

QuinkWashable · 10/01/2023 14:26

I found coldbrew to be much nicer to drink black - I make it overnight in a special cold-brew pot, but I can't see why a cafetière wouldn't work the same way.

I put in twice the amount of ground that I would for hot coffee in the cafetière and put it in the fridge overnight, make 3 days worth in one go.

LittleDonkeyKong · 10/01/2023 14:30

I've drank black coffee since I was a teenager. Can't bear white coffee. I buy tesco gold lid instant and even snobby coffee drinkers ask what it is as it's really nice

SleeplessInEngland · 10/01/2023 14:30

Lol, so many coffee snobs on here. "Instant coffee literally makes me throw my pancreas up!"

I know this make me look thick (Not inaccurate!) but how do you get hot coffee this way? Is cold brew meant to be drunk ice cold (not a coffee snob, can you tell, hahahha)
