To be sick of cashless society

I prefer to use cash, I always have.

I find budgeting and spending so much easier. If I am tapping away on my card I think nothing of constant £3 £6 etc being spent on things I probably wouldn't buy if I was spending cash.

More and more places simply don't take cash and it's driving me mad.

@AmazonsFuckedUpFreeMusicFeature All these multiple cards for different reasons just makes life more complicated though. It is way easier to just have a small pot of cash in the house to use.

Not much imagination being used here. Cash can be hidden and squirreled away over time in different places. Or even if that's not the case, a little will be enough to get away and get help in an emergency.

If everything's digital and your phone is taken off you, you're stuck.

You're not listening. You just log in from another phone. Or a laptop. Or any other device.
If your man finds your cash, its gone. If he takes your phone, your funds are all protected. Can you tell which one of those is going to be of use to you...money or not money?

Lots of people do not have that tight a budget. So ifr they overspend by £2.80 in a week it does not matter. Some people have a very tight budget and in that case cash makes it much easier to keep track. Cash is also better for people who tend to overspend. As I said a friend does that so she leaves her card at home and takes a certain amount of cash out,. Then she can't go over that amount.

How does cash make it easier to keep track? On my phone, I can see every transaction, where, when, how much. I can download it all. If I spend cash, how do I know in a few days where I spent it, how much? I don't.
If I want to go out and only spend a certain amount, I simply tell my app the limit and it won't work after that is spent.

Every single thing people are saying about cash is easier on the cashless. PLUS it can't be lost or stolen half as easily.

malificent7 · 10/01/2023 18:52

I love it...it's so annoying handling pennies and when a note goes missing.

It really doesn't if you have 2 cards. It's very similar effort to transfer before going out as it would count out money from a jar.
There is no complications unless you lose it. In which case you have at leaat a chance of getting remaining money back (or even the stolen ones) compared to losing cash

I was happy riding a horse everywhere and suddenly it’s all cars this and cars that

Cars are noisy and smelly and when everyone uses them, the roads jam. Using cars is all about personal comfort at the expense of others so🤷🏼‍♀️

Horses weren't noisy and smelly? They didn't have traffic jams? How was the personal comfort of the people wqalking through the epic amount of horse shit on every road?

borderline53 · 10/01/2023 18:59

I’m amazed that anyone would think a cashless society would be a good thing.

AmazonsFuckedUpFreeMusicFeature · 10/01/2023 19:00

I just imagined an alternative universe where posters post about that godforsaken house next door having 4 noisy horses (who needs that!) and never cleaning their shit from the road. And smell😂

Horses are beautiful, that's the difference. Manure doesn't cause lung conditions and I don't removed there being traffic jams either

TheWitchesAreBackInTown · 10/01/2023 19:11

My issue with a cashless society is security and privacy. Identity theft rising and surveillance by banks government and tech companies increasing. It's also potentially giving them too much power.

Unless you are at least 150 years old you wouldn't remember, but I can assure you there were. Horses were smelly and dangerous and you can't concieve of just how many there were.

in 1900 in London alone there 11 thousand horse drawn cabs, and thousands of horse drawn buses which used 12 horses each. There at least 50,000 horses in a London that was much smaller thgan today. Each horse can shit 30lbs a DAYand piss 2 pints. They attarcted massive numbers of flies that spread typhoid amongst other things. When they died they often were left in the streets until they putrified, and given that working horses had a 3 year life span, thats a lot of horse carcasses.

If cars hadn't changed everything London would be now under 20 feet of solid horse manure.

So yes, there were traffic jams, and many people died because of the horses.

MechanicaHound · 10/01/2023 19:24

I get the convenience of card and phone payments... But this is what worries me. Too much power and control in the hands of those who can turn our money tap on and off at will. And if we look at China, we can see how nefarious this can be. Criticise the government or write something online that's not politically correct, suddenly you find your payments are being declined.

Identity theft could be solved by simple national id. No one in my native country had the issue. Meanwhile we are both in UK under CIFAS ffs

I need to either fire up the DeLorean to return to perceived better times or go in the loft for my tinfoil hat. Grin

AmazonsFuckedUpFreeMusicFeature · 10/01/2023 19:31

No one I know that should have said!!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 10/01/2023 19:42

Cashless society = less privacy, more control from banks etc and far more issues for those who do not know/trust phones or online banking.

CeriB82 · 10/01/2023 19:51

I take out cash for the week. Prefer it. YANBU.

I am very adjacent to this field and cross over with a lot of my work.

A true cashless society will happen eventually, it gives more control for governments and banks, to take it to the more extreme cases it is akin to the social credit system that China uses.

And no, buying a new phone will not bypass the situation. The first step has been done with biometric unlocking of phones and authorising payments, it isn't tied to the phone, it is tied to you.

The edge case isn't what China is currently doing, that could easily be introduced with MN fully behind it with the right 'protection of children/women/' or 'anti incel/men' narrative. The edge case is what comes after.

Yeah it's always "no thanks" to ID's in UK. Then people moan about how easy it is to be victim if identity theft, have finance in their name by an ex/fm while proving their identity with Who kneos if real birth certificate and leccy bills🤷🏻

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2023 20:11

Bank notes featuring KIng Charles are due to enter circulation mid 2024, so no panic required just yet.

A lot of sports stadiums are cash only. It’s stated everywhere-on the website, on the ticket. I thin k that’s sensible. When you have masses of people all wanting a drink in a short time it really speeds things up.

Not really when you need to give change. As long as there is a good internet connection, a quick tap is almost instantaneous.

Stopthebusplease · 10/01/2023 20:27

I have mixed opinions about this, as I think for children being able to physically see how much money they have left would help them to learn about money a lot more easily. I also think for those saying that you don't get robbed using cards, that this is completely untrue. How many people have had their cards stolen, or cloned, and these days when you can tap and spend up to £100, (how many people keep/kept that amount in their purse on a daily basis?) in a moment, it's easy for a thief to run up a good amount of debt pretty rapidly, that you then have to mess around trying to sort out with the bank, prove it wasn't you who spent it, etc.

On the other hand, I do like being able to just tap and pay the bill, without having to worry as to whether I have enough cash in my purse.
