Is peanut butter (100% natural peanut butter) sweet.. or savoury?

im having a debate with one of my siblings about how sweet and savoury food do/don’t belong together. I mentioned cheese and craps, apple sauce on pork, soft cheese in cheesecakes..

all while I’m eating my apple and peanut butter.. it got me thinking. Peanuts as a snack would be savoury, so why does peanut butter seem like a sweet?!

Cheese and grapes*

Nuts are neutral.

MothershipG · 09/01/2023 14:28

Depends if you buy one that has sugar in it, but if you get a sugar free one then it goes well with everything!

Schlafen · 09/01/2023 14:28

Savoury. Peanuts are naturally salty and a lot of peanut butters have salt added to them.

primeoflife · 09/01/2023 14:29

OP is talking about 100% peanuts, no added salt and sugar.

I think I'd go sweet (ish) 🤣

ChessieFL · 09/01/2023 14:31

I don’t eat it but I’ve always thought of it as a savoury food.

MisguidedGhosts · 09/01/2023 14:34

I think peanut butter is savoury and you're an animal for eating it with apple!

Linlaw · 09/01/2023 14:34

It’s one of those foods that can be either, depending what you eat it with. Like Branston pickle with cheese - savory, with Madeira cake - sweet.

I'm looking at my jar of no added salt no added sugar peanut butter and it says salt per 100g is 0.0g.

OneTC · 09/01/2023 14:37

Peanut butter goes with an astonishing variety of foods

Branston pickle and Madeira cake? 😬

There are some sick people on Mumsnet!

MickeyMouseShithouse · 09/01/2023 15:06

This is exactly what I expected from this thread, a total divide 😂

OP posts:
emmathedilemma · 09/01/2023 15:07

savoury

LaFemmeDamnee · 09/01/2023 15:08

I looked at our peanut butter this morning after another thread and it is something like 30% protein, 45% fat, and only 6% sugar. So definitely not a sweet food.

Peanuts are naturally very low in salt.

NCgoingdry · 09/01/2023 15:15

Cheese and craps 😂

OutOfTheBluey · 09/01/2023 15:25

Savoury but can be a nice accompaniment to sweet foods.

AffIt · 09/01/2023 15:31

Sorry, but BRANSTON PICKLE WITH MADEIRA CAKE?

(And for the OP - I love peanut butter (wholenut, no added salt or sugar) with slices of green apple and some nice Cheddar.)

Thingsthatgo · 09/01/2023 15:49

Peanut butter is non binary.

Ihavedogs · 09/01/2023 15:56

I can’t currently think of a nut that isn’t neutral in terms of sweet or savoury. They all take on whatever you put them with.

You can take a bag of mixed nuts and roast them with whatever flavours you want and make them sweet, savoury or even a mix of both.

MangoBiscuit · 09/01/2023 16:14

Beef has no sugar, and is savoury.
Cheddar cheese, about 0.5%, and savoury.
Peanuts are about 4%, so depending on how sensitive your taste is, might be savoury, might be mildly sweet. Personally I find them very slightly sweet, but not enough to stop me pairing them with either sweet or savoury things.

Also, peanut butter on apple slices, food of the gods! Grin

EndlessRain1 · 09/01/2023 16:16

hmmm. Neutral I'd say. Real peanut butter not filled with salt or sugar is anyway. Can go both with sweet foods or savoury.

Obviously savoury.

But @Linlaw really needs to come back and explain this!

Flapjackquack · 09/01/2023 16:22

It’s say peanuts are a sweeter savoury food, like peas are a sweeter vegetable than broccoli for example.
