Is peanut butter (100% natural peanut butter) sweet.. or savoury?

im having a debate with one of my siblings about how sweet and savoury food do/don’t belong together. I mentioned cheese and craps, apple sauce on pork, soft cheese in cheesecakes..

all while I’m eating my apple and peanut butter.. it got me thinking. Peanuts as a snack would be savoury, so why does peanut butter seem like a sweet?!

*I’d

Also another one thinking WTF at Branston Pickle on Madeira cake.

I find it sickly in a way I don't find other savoury foods sickly. I'd say it was sweet/salty.

pictoosh · 09/01/2023 16:35

It's both and I love it. My favourite is Whole Earth Dark Roasted.
I use it in place of butter to make healthy fruit and nut flapjacks, eat it with apple, have it on toast with raspberry jam. Sometimes I just have it in sandwich on its own.

Cheese and craps 😂

Oh thank god. I thought everyone had just glossed over the hilarious typo! 😂

@Hidingawaytoday and all other doubters, it is delicious. My nan made a Madeira cake every few weeks, always served with a dollop of pickle on the side. I only realised it wasn’t ‘normal’ when i served it to my inlaws. A couple of them are eating it the ‘right’ way now!

@MisguidedGhosts first time I’ve been called sick on mumnet! Whoohoo!

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/01/2023 00:08

I find it sweet, too.
Don’t have a sweet tooth at all and salty snacks are my go to.

Good lord.

Well, I have some Madeira cake in the cupboard that a neighbour brought round for the bells which we haven't opened yet, so I'll give it a shot - I'm nothing if not open-minded. 😄

"Is peanut butter sweet or savoury?"...I'd say YES !
I'm putting in the same category as baked beans, BBQ pulled pork and sweet chilli relish. The combo messes with head. I prefer solo flavours
But cocoa/chocolate + salt + (a bit of) sugar and nuts....perfect 😋

JudgeRudy · 10/01/2023 00:14

I'd say they were 'fluid' rather than neutral or binary.

Linlaw · 10/01/2023 02:50

@AffIt Glad you’re going to give it a go. Please come back and let us all know how lovely it is. You’re welcome!

Teddysbackyard66 · 10/01/2023 02:54

Savoury. Love PB on Apple, and chocolate with nuts.

SorenLore · 10/01/2023 02:59

Both. I make my own. Roast peanuts, chuck in food processor, done.

FlatPackHarry · 10/01/2023 03:45

Definitely sweet. It's great with apples, and on toast with banana slices.

Ponderingwindow · 10/01/2023 03:47

Peanut butter is savoury

it is often paired with sweet things like apples or preserves.

now I would really like an apple and peanut butter, which might be the most perfect snack ever invented.
