Is that usual for secondary schools? If you're 2 mins or 2 hours late it's an after school detention every time.

Is that the usual? If

DS was late to school registration yesterday ( despite actually being in school) then late back from lunch by a few mins. He now has an hours detention today after school - which I whole heartedly support because how else will he learn?!
30 mins per late episode.
I could go on at him all day long about being on time and being more organised but it'll fall on deaf ears, whereas missing out on walking home with friends or missing some lunch/break time will have an affect

Never had any affect on me.

But there again I struggled all through my life till Dd showed me the symptoms of ADHD and am now medicated

Still occasionally late.

Set off yesterday for work and thought I had an hour to get myself organised and not have to rush.

Still only just made it on time.

I think the work analogy doesn’t work as a child doesn’t get anything from going to school where as going to work you get money for turning up on time and you get to keep on getting money as long as you turn up on time each day

Seems a bit silly to apply the same penalty irrespective of how late the child is. Once they're a minute late, they may as well skive off for another hour or two if the penalty is going to be the same.

They don't miss planes or trains.

Don't be late for school.

Quite simple.

They don't miss trains or buses, the trains or buses are late. That's the issue. If you walk to school you know how long it will take.

And presumably if they have a plane to catch their parents are making sure they're there on time. It's not down to a teenager to get themselves to an airport, generally speaking. And they don't fly to school on a daily basis! Not in the UK, anyway,

Sounds like a system that would encourage people to turn up on time.

Punctuality is important.

Or not bother if they were going to be late.

I hated homework. My school gave what was supposed to be 30 minutes of homework per subject and 3 subjects per night

For me being undiagnosed dyslexic and adhd it could take me 3 hours to complete one piece of home work and I would spend all weekend and all evening wading through the work

I then realised if you didn’t go in you didn’t get homework. So I used to not go in.

I know a couple of people from dds senior school who did fly to school daily.

Take some ownership for god's sake.

Very environmentally friendly.

Absolutely the norm. The days of detention being a punishment with actual meaning are long gone. They're dished out for every transgression these days, not like when we were younger and if you got detention you knew you'd pushed too far and gone over the line.

And they wonder why kids aren’t engaged or don’t respect teachers, when they’re missing lessons due to minor infractions. Kids are disillusioned and depressed. Maybe handing out detentions left right and centre isn’t working.

Arrivals4lucky · 05/03/2025 12:25

Ours is 2 in one week,
Or 1 late 2 weeks in a row, but includes back from lunch and being late to classes in the day.
any more than that the parents are talked to and the kids tutor to see what the issue is.

Maybe, but it certainly made my always late teen in time to school and class.
