If your adult colleague has declined having their photo on the company website (which is optional) and has said they ‘cannot’ appear on any social media platform for ‘personal reasons’ what would you immediately think?

Honestly? I’d think it’s none of my business and move on to my next thought.

Exactly. Some people aren’t bothered, some people are - it’s a non issue

Flapjackquack · 08/01/2023 12:46

Nothing because I feel the same as your colleague. I don’t have any exciting reasons other than I don’t want my photo online.

This. Nothing more, nothing less.

Susanthehappytrottingelf · 08/01/2023 13:30

I would assume that they had been in an abusive relationship of some sort (parent or partner)

Mojoj · 08/01/2023 13:39

That it's none of my business.

PegSliderskew · 08/01/2023 14:01

"Wow, I wish I'd thought of saying that!"

Tinkerbyebye · 08/01/2023 14:08

Up to them. I would be the same and have nothing to hide if that’s what you are getting at

StrawberryWater · 08/01/2023 14:37

None of my business.

Often though it’s because they don’t want certain people finding them (like if they’re escaping domestic violence).

Notimeforaname · 08/01/2023 14:39

My immediate thought is they don't want to make themselves traceable to an abusive person or people that they have moved on from.

hoppityscotch · 08/01/2023 14:41

I wouldn't think much of it, just assume they have a reason and ask if i need to give out their email address etc.

DuplicateUserName · 08/01/2023 13:20

Still the same outcome though isn't it?

Pages and pages of speculation, each getting more and more dramatic and imaginative.

Which is kind of the point of this and other chat sites

Silverpining · 08/01/2023 17:46

I’d think they were once a victim of DV

LadyHarmby · 08/01/2023 17:47

I wouldn’t think about it for more than about two seconds. It’s a non-event.

JupiterSaturnMars · 08/01/2023 17:55

I would think nothing.
Not everyone is a sheep who wants to be plastered over the Internet, some people actually like good old-fashioned privacy and are entitled to that privacy.
Also some people go through abuse and get stalked via any online presence they have.

TimeForMeToF1y · 08/01/2023 18:05

I assume this is a reverse

Some people will think nothing, others might wonder why but theres no way to know and no way to change their thoughts so it is what it is

Snippedasababy · 08/01/2023 18:07

I would think there was something serious going on and it wasn’t my business and forget it.

StillWeRise · 08/01/2023 18:09

I would completely accept and respect this and make sure others did too.
But I can't believe those saying they wouldn't wonder why. I would. Unless the colleague said 'I just don't like the idea of it' (which is reason enough) I'd be wondering why but I wouldn't ask.

I wouldn't think too deep into it.

However I once worked with somebody who declined to be on the company's website and social media, she confided in me as to why - she had fled a DV relationship years prior and was petrified of him finding her. The company had their address etc on their website and stuff. So it was fully understandable to me.

Hesma · 08/01/2023 18:17

That’s their choice

Growyourowncrumpets · 08/01/2023 18:18

Could be anything from witness protection, to personal preference.

In my last job I just wanted to leave and want my face on their website.
The job paid my bills, they weren’t getting my soul.

Didn’t want my face on their website.

Tratjymp · 08/01/2023 18:20

They are Martin Bormann.

luckylavender · 08/01/2023 18:21

I'd think it was none of my business. And I certainly wouldn't be speculating about it on an open forum.

whoyougonnacallGOATSBUTTER · 08/01/2023 18:27

It would barely impinge on me it’s that irrelevant.

seventyp · 08/01/2023 18:29

They hate their job and not want to be associate with it in a public way

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 08/01/2023 18:29

I'd think 'fine'.

Not everyone has or wants a social media profile. They don't need a reason.
