I was at the first Ikea store in the UK on the day it opened. They were very clear that it was eye-KEE-ah. No reason to change that, they can pronounce it however they want in other countries, but in the UK it's eye-KEE-ah. Not that I go and buy their crap furniture these days. Same with Nestles - the milky bar kid song just doesn't scan properly if your do the French version. I didn't get a Hyundai because I didn't know how to pronounce them so got a Skoda instead...oh, hang on 😖

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2023 21:04

Horace the Hyundai will remain a Hy-un-die!

TeenDivided · 07/01/2023 17:48

No absolutely it wasn't in the 70s as far as my memory goes (happy to be disproved).

The Milky bar kid is strong and tough, but only the best is good enough, the creamiest milk the somethinist bar, nessals milky bar'.

I don't remember them even using 'Nestle's' in the the song. I think the words were:

The Milky Bar kid is strong and tough,
And only the best is good enough,
The creamiest milk,
The whitest bar,
The goodness that's in Milky Bar.

Falalalafel · 07/01/2023 21:11

How does Hyacinth pronounce Bucket?

BarbaraofSeville · 07/01/2023 21:13

KirstenBlest · 07/01/2023 20:12

Why do people say 'Eye-beetha'?

Because it not Spanish, but Catalan or possibly local dialect.

Melliphant · 07/01/2023 21:16

The Milky Bar kid is strong and tough,
And only the best is good enough,
The creamiest milk the whitest bar,
The good taste that's in Milky Bar,
THE MILKYBARS ARE ON ME!
Milky Bar so creamy white,
Nestles Milky Bar.

Cool, where was that @Melliphant ?

Not all their furniture is crap.

NannyGythaOgg · 07/01/2023 21:19

There is also 'Nestle's' Condensed Milk - I bet no one can find that pronounced Nesslay from the 60s, 70s or 80s

And along with Nike (now Nikee) there is also Adidas (all short vowels back then) which is now Adeedas.

But I live in Yorkshire and am regularly pulled up by the way I say English words, never mind non English ones.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/01/2023 21:20

It’s Ingrid BERGMAN, people!

re Jif/Cif, I think it was called Jif here because at the time it came on the market, Cif sounded like the slang for syphilis. They were able to change to Cif to bring us in line with other countries once the association with the clap had faded.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/01/2023 21:21

Also, I say Ness-lay but can only talk about “Nessuls Milky Bar” (sung to the advert tune, obvs).

Yes, and not BerGman - BerJmann! 😅

@Falalalafel I've just found out from Google I lied - apparently the first in the UK was Warrington. I was at the Wembley one in 1988, opened (unless I misremembered this too) by the awful Bernie Grant (shame it wasn't Eddie Grant) - drove all the way from Brixton because I needed some shelves and I obviously needed Scandanavian ones. Got a very cheap towel with massive "IKEA" on it which still does its towelly job and various other bargains.

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/01/2023 18:28

That’s a new one on me. I know it’s pronounced like that in France. But I remember the advert ‘Come to Ikeeeyaah’…. And the Nessles Milky bar ad.

Manufacturers change pronunciation eg Ford KA.

Ford don’t seem to be able to make their mind up. Apparently Ecoboost is pronounced EEK OH BOOST, yet Ecosport is pronounced EK OH SPORT.

. Nessels Milky bar - but I do remember this coming up a few years ago and some of the 'evidence' on line was 'inconclusive'...
Falalalafel · 07/01/2023 21:33

@Melliphant Ok still pretty cool. When Ingvar Kamprad was alive he handed out Christmas presents himself at our Ikea, and staff got to shake his hand. He was a very sensible and incredibly smart old man.

Old towels are the best anyway. Bought new fluffy ones, but always prefer the oldest ones I have.

What about 'Nestles Milky Bar' ?

Came on here to say that. Old school.

alterego2 · 07/01/2023 21:35

wheresmymojo · 07/01/2023 20:23

It's certainly difficult.

I have a friend who insists on saying paella in the correct Spanish pronunciation. She is English and speaking to English people.

I know she's right but also every time she asks for pay-ay-ah I can't help but think she sounds like a bit of a dick.

Then on the other hand people who anglicise croissant annoy the fuck out of me too.

I'm a total mixed up hypocrite.

Are you actually me? I always think this - I pronounce French foods correctly (as far was I can) but NO WAY would I say hor ee-tho even tho I know its right. Cor-itz-o all the way🙂

WeAreTheHeroes · 07/01/2023 21:55

BarbaraofSeville · 07/01/2023 21:13

Because it not Spanish, but Catalan or possibly local dialect.

The Ei of Eivissa (Ibiza in Catalan) is pronounced ee so I don't know where you get that from?

Diversion · 07/01/2023 22:07

Also Stihl (powertools) previously know as Still and now pronounced Schsteel. I am glad it is now just me that is annoyed by all of these changes in pronunciation

Yep. I didn't know until a year or so ago that Catalans don't pronounce "c" or "z" as "th" . In fact they hate it because it's Spanish and they want away.

KirstenBlest · 08/01/2023 07:13

BarbaraofSeville · 07/01/2023 21:13

Because it not Spanish, but Catalan or possibly local dialect.

It's Eivissa locally and pronounced Ay-vissa.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/01/2023 18:36

What irked me slightly about this is that Hyundai have used the old pronunciation - the one that is so entirely unrecognisable in their new advert - in their own previous adverts! So it seems pretty rude to criticise people for using the pronunciation they have been using.

And their sales team still pronounce it the 'incorrect' way in my local dealership! ! (I have one)

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/01/2023 07:43

I think this one takes the biscuit Biscuit for pronounceability.

First they came for IKEA
KangarooKenny · 08/01/2023 07:45

I will pronounce it however I want to, as is my right.

XanaduKira · 08/01/2023 08:06

allthelittleangelsriseupriseup · 07/01/2023 19:36

However, if you live in York, Nestle is pronounced Rowntrees.😉

Absolutely Grin
