No absolutely it wasn't in the 70s as far as my memory goes (happy to be disproved).

The Milky bar kid is strong and tough, but only the best is good enough, the creamiest milk the somethinist bar, nessals milky bar'.

The company was Nestles in the 60's and also in the 70's when I was sent there to be interviewed for a job.
I seem to recall it was still Nestles in the 80's but lost touch with it after that.

IKEA
’Ik key’ is something dirty. Why would they want it pronounced like that?
Best to buy something made locally then it doesn’t matter how it’s pronounced as we’d all know.

mattthefish1 · 08/01/2023 18:45

It's clever PR! Look at this thread we are all talking about the company so it's job done!

Falalalafel · 07/01/2023 21:23

Yes, and not BerGman - BerJmann! 😅

Yes, and "Bergman" is actually pronounced more like "Baaayyyy-man" in Swedish....

neighboursmustliveon · 08/01/2023 19:16

It doesn't bother me. I still pronounce Ikea Eye-Kee-ah so will probably continue to pronounce it High-un-die 🤷🏽‍♀️

Ukrainebaby23 · 08/01/2023 19:33

Oh, like Lidl ?
Guess I don't really care but interesting point.

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/01/2023 19:35

Falalalafel · 07/01/2023 20:48

Is she from the very south of Sweden, like Malmö? Then the dialect would be Ick-ey-a.

Thank you.

If anyone remonstrates with me, I shall point out that I speak Swedish with a Malmo dialect.

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/01/2023 19:38

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/01/2023 07:43

I think this one takes the biscuit Biscuit for pronounceability.

The artist formerly known as "sane". 🙄

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/01/2023 19:44

lieselotte · 08/01/2023 16:24

we say 'Pontyland' and 'Ponteeland' the same This confused me, too.

Emphasis.

PONtyland vs PonTEEland

It’s not pronounced key though, it’s k-ee. 🙃

donteatme · 08/01/2023 19:51

I think the milky bar ads that say Neslay are American.

But noone from Ikea would likely give a shit how you pronounce it @Sainte it’s all marketing. It’s interesting to those who are interested in languages. Ikea is interesting (for some) for what the letters actually stand for.

Sainte · 08/01/2023 19:59

Just buy if it’s made locally. Problem solved.

Well, depends on where you live and what you want to buy though, doesn’t it.

I swear everyone used to say Pew-jo for Purgeot, then it became Per-jo and now I keep hearing Pew-jo again! And I don't know what I should say!

Yes, this ^

Vynalbob · 08/01/2023 20:31

I agree with pompous name changes and adjust buying stuff accordingly......though I've never been a fan of any shop that seems akin to a one way rat maze anyway (sorry flat pack fans)
Jiff - CIF
Loss of OPAL Fruits (though I did see some recently)
Immac now sounds like your throwing kittens Veet
Also not a fan of resizing a £1 bar of dairy milk will soon look like on piece from a 70s bar.
One final gripe tins that don't stack..... I'm looking at you Heinz....you used to be able to.

I'm not always grumpy.... sometimes I sleep👀🙄

fixedtime · 08/01/2023 20:37

I used to live in Hayes, West London in the 70s. There used to be a Nestle factory/offices there, and the road outside was (and still is) called Nestles Avenue, always pronounced 'Nessells'. Lots of our neighbours and friends' parents worked there, and all pronounced it like that.

I assume that must have been the official UK pronunciation at the time or the company could have told staff to call it 'Nes-lay'. There was a lot of suspicion of foreign foods (and indeed foreigners) in those days, so I think Nestle probably preferred to sound British.

But I don't know why Ikea didn't just use their real pronunciation from the start, as they always used their clean, bright Scandinavian-ness as a selling point.

butterbible · 08/01/2023 20:48

The way it's pronounced in the new UK ad is still quite far from the actual Korean pronunciation, though obviously closer than the previous version

saraclara · 08/01/2023 20:54

5foot5 · 07/01/2023 17:57

I don't know how to break this to you gently, but I just found a recording of the advert from 1961 and they did say Nestlé.

(Nes lay)

Nope, I don't know where your ad came fromm, but for all my childhood and some of my young adulthood, it was nessles. I might be older now, but I've not lost my marbles yet.

messybutfun · 08/01/2023 20:56

Volkswagen - Fow vey
Mercedes - Mertsaydehs
BMW - bay m vey

but the worst is Wolfsheim, please please don’t say Wolf shime - I can just never look at Leo DiCaprio the same way again

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 08/01/2023 20:57

Primark was always pronounced pree-mark in NI, since it opened back in the year dot. Then it moved into the GB market a few years ago and suddenly they decided they would pronounce the name pry-mark and pretend pree-mark never happened.

BUT I REMEMBER.

Anyway, I just call it Penney's. As God intended.

joongkivincenzo · 08/01/2023 21:01

IKEA - I've known for a few years we pronounce it incorrectly and from now on will be pronouncing it ick Kay ya Motherfucker, because that sounds fun. "Shall we go to ikea motherfucker?" ... perhaps not!

Korean pronounce/spell using syllables so Hyundai is 현대, 2 syllables. Hyun 현 and dai 대.
I think it's not a big adjustment considering they romanise it for us already and don't expect us all to know the Hangul version!

As far as Nestlé, I can only remember it being pronounced Nestlé or Rowntrees not nessels, but I have a lousy memory!!

Are Jif and gif pronounced the same or with a hard g?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/01/2023 21:02

Being picky, @messybutfun, but VW is fow vey - the German pronunciation of V and W, but Volkswagen is pronounces folksvagen.
