Thread Police

Seriously who do they think they are?

Move this thread, it's should be in Brexit/The Royals/TV etc

Loads of it at the moment about the Royals.

Most subjects are not in the "correct" place.

All the fucking Christmas ones did my head in, but I didn't feel the need to go on every one and stamp my feet and tell them to put it in the "right" place.

The royals ones are obvious, so just slide your finger over it to hide the thread. You don't even have to open it up.

Do these nutters not realise every time they post "get this thread moved" that they are just bumping it up!

So am i being unreasonable to want them to just fuck off!

Sorry rant over!

This should probably be in Chat

ApolloandDaphne · 07/01/2023 10:43

It is very annoying though when you have hidden an entire topic only to find the subject raised in other topics. I have hidden the Royal Family topic and would like all chat about Harry etc to fuck off over there and leave me in peace!

WashAsDelicates · 07/01/2023 10:45

It is weird how many people post things that boil down to "I don't want to read this thread!" Don't, then. Or "I'm not interested in this!" So don't engage. Or even "You shouldn't be interested in this!" Who appointed them the thread police?

Like people who reply to questions on Amazon with "I don't know".

You can hide individual threads, too.

joggingonifonly · 07/01/2023 10:48

I remember getting this stressed when I joined MN 😁. At the end of the day some posters are always going to be annoying. My current (small gripe!), is the posters who reply "yawn" to another post. (It's not happened to me so not personal) but some posters are just rude. I am generally easy to wind up irl but I have learned to ignore the annoying posters on MN - I couldn't stay here if I didn't. Some people like to be irritated and like the chance to show their irritation- let them crack on, it's certainly not for me though.

Athenen0ctua · 07/01/2023 10:49

I think when topics have a huge number of threads like the royal family, Christmas, or covid, then they should be moved to the correct place so people can hide those topics. They really clog up the boards. If it's a topic without much traffic then it doesn't matter as much.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/01/2023 10:51

@WashAsDelicates I know but i really don't want to have to scroll past and hide multiple threads on a topic I don't have any interest in so I can find some that i would like.

The amazon thing though - I got an email once saying "You have purchased this item could you answer a query about it?" I replied (thinking it was to amazon or directly to the person asking) that it was a gift and I didn't know the answer and my response was put on the questions page. Complete naivety and idiocy on my part but not meant to be public!

It only happened once though!

Oldfox · 07/01/2023 11:07

Yeah - especially when there are loads of threads on the same thing,

there are 7 threads (at time of writing!) in the top 50 - so over 10% of threads are about the Harry book and revelations....

I'm here for parking fun, cheeky fuckers, etc, not for a book club

You do all realise that the time it takes you to tell someone should move their thread would be better spent hitting Report and asking MN to move it don't you?

Bit less antagonistic.

FromTheFront2theBack · 07/01/2023 11:13

I'm 50-50 on this. I kind of agree that some topics (royals) are done to bloody death and those of us who are sick to death of them want to be able to hide the threads. On the other hand people can be quite pedantic and patronising about where to post what so I definitely know what you mean.

Thighlengthboots · 07/01/2023 11:14

YES! I agree. You can see from the title of the thread its about the royal family so why on earth do those people click on it, read the post and THEN moan and whine that they dont want to read it? I mean, thats a level of idiocy there that I really dont understand. Just scroll past if it doesnt interest you, its not exactly difficult or complex is it?

WashAsDelicates · 07/01/2023 11:20

It's one swipe per offensive thread as you scroll down Active, and then you never have to bother with that thread again. How exhausting can that be?

They clog up the active threads. If you hide the topic then all threads correctly put in that topic are hidden and you don't have to scroll past multiple threads. It's not difficult just to put threads in the right place if it's a topic with multiple active threads. It's not like not knowing there is a topic on keeping chickens or something!

Oh that makes sense. My sympathies - I, too, get sharp attacks of naivetyGrin

Oh gosh OP I was a bit to create a thread about this myself, some posters are absolutely ridiculous I agree

I mean, when you read a newspaper and there's an article that doesn't interest you you don't complain to the editors to move it you just skip the page?!! Why it angers people so much is beyond me it's mad

I’ve done that too, Amazon are so sneaky with those emails they really don’t make it clear that they’re going to oublish the response.

Any OP yanbu the self-appointed thread police are so annoying. Particularly when an OP is clearly struggling with baby or partner and the first reply is to aggressively point out a typo or tell them they’re in the wrong topic.

AutumnCrow · 07/01/2023 11:27

I've never really understood why posters don't

  1. Report the thread as being on the wrong Board. You know, tell MNHQ who can actually move the bloody thing.
  2. Hide the thread. It's a one-click operation.
  3. Avoid engaging with the thread so as not to keep bumping it up in 'Active' and/or 'Trending' where they will keep seeing it and keep being fewmin.
Oher · 07/01/2023 11:28

(That said I did really enjoy that poster the other day who was correcting someone’s spelling while mixing up the words semantic and pedantic in her own post. Created an amusing debate but yes derailed the OP.)

ToBeOrNotToBee · 07/01/2023 11:29

Agreed.

The thread police are self-indulgent.

That's what I did this morning - along with many other people by the look of it.
