I really can't be too specific as it would be very outing.
When someone subscribes to something, and you get a code from a friend to use when starting the subscription, usually you will get some money off and so will your friend.

A friend of mine wanted to sign up to something and I have a code which gives me money off and them money off if they use it. I told them this.
This is something they knew very little about but wanted to sign up so she's asked me loads of questions about it which I've answered and then I sent the code.

Friend has messaged me to say they have found when going on the website that they were getting money off anyway just for signing up so they didn't use my code.

Would this bother you?

Not in the slightest

1hyuny · 07/01/2023 08:17

Yeah its a bit mean of them but maybe they just didn't understand that it would benefit you.

catfunk · 07/01/2023 08:17

It wouldn't 'bother me' no as I have real issues to worry about but it would have made sense for her to use the code so you also get a discount. Maybe that was more complicated though and she couldn't be arsed which is fair enough.

RubyPip · 07/01/2023 08:17

Against the grain - yes! It would have been no trouble for her to put in the code so you got a reward. Seems especially mean as you helped her with questions etc.

FawnFrenchieMum · 07/01/2023 08:18

Depends if they were getting it cheaper still by not using the code.
Sky for example offer a voucher for both parties if you recommend a friend but if they use that code they lose all the new customer discounts, which makes it a lot cheaper over the year then the one off voucher.
I wouldn’t expect my friend to pay more just so I got a discount but unlike the others, if it was going to be the same price for her I’d be a little miffed if they didn’t use the code to help me as well. Probably wouldn’t go as far as saying anything.

WordtoYoMumma · 07/01/2023 08:18

Well yes, a bit! They have signed up for something that, if they'd used your code at no cost to themselves you'd have saved money, but they didn't bother? I'd be annoyed at not saving any money, yes!
It's a small thing in the grand scheme etc but yeh I'd have been a bit miffed OP

Dotcheck · 07/01/2023 08:19

oh, so you don’t get the money off now?
Is this like Hello Fresh?
I’d be disappointed, but sometimes those sites can make it easier for new customers to get their own discounts rather than also giving you a reward. Also the dicount might have been greater for them.

Just give the code to someone else?

fajitaaaa · 07/01/2023 08:19

They probably didn't understand the code, or they got a bigger discount not using it.

WomanhoodIsABirthright · 07/01/2023 08:20

Yes.

I'd think differently about her and probably start phasing her out.

She can take up your time and knowledge but can't return the favour? No.

CameltoeParkerBowles · 07/01/2023 08:21

Not in the least

MRex · 07/01/2023 08:21

If they had to pay more using the code than not, then I wouldn't expect them to use it. It seems very unrealistic to think your friend would have paid extra to give you a discount, I can't think who would do that unless it's tickets where you buy as a pair to split the benefit.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 07/01/2023 08:21

Of course not.

fajitaaaa · 07/01/2023 08:21

Also would you genuinely have have helped her out so much if you didn't have a code? I find some people almost turn into sales people when they have a code and so I get concerned for the validity of their information and enthusiasm for a product.

ravingbathtime · 07/01/2023 08:21

It was as simple as entering my code and I would have received a discount next month and they would get a big discount. It's a very simple process and one I've done before when I was given a code from someone else.

ravingbathtime · 07/01/2023 08:22

@MRex
They wouldn't pay anything extra. It would be the same but using my referral code.

donttellmehesalive · 07/01/2023 08:23

A friend gave me a 10% off code but I got 20% off and a free gift if I went through their website, so I did that instead. I hope she wasn't offended. It didn't occur to me that she might be. Surely everyone will do what's financially best for them.

ravingbathtime · 07/01/2023 08:23

@fajitaaaa
Yes I would have as it's an area I offer lots of advice with regardless. So yes I would.
I can't say what it is as it's outing. But yes I do this often.
