Shaming people on Facebook

Jessiejines · 06/01/2023 18:41

AIBU that shaming people on Facebook should be illegal?

I'm on about the ones on local community Facebook groups who post pictures of people.

Example of some from my local:

Image of some man walking his dog with a woman in the early hours. Quite a grainy shot so can't really see their faces.

"Anybody recognise these two? I think they've let their dog poop on my front garden and not picked it up".

Picture of a young lady itting on a field.

"Just seen this young girl throw rubbish on the field. Should be taught some manners"

Picture of a white van with the license plate on show

"Watch out for this van. Seems a bit dodgy knocking on doors"

I know a lot of the time it's about problems like rubbish, littering etc. but I think posting photos of people online is a bit like a witch-hunt. Especially when other people comment aswell.

OP posts:

I reckon they deserve it, if you don't want to be shamed then don't act like a pig 🤷🏼‍♀️

This. Don't be a twat and you won't be posted. Simples

Gingerkittykat · 06/01/2023 20:31

I really wish someone would name and shame the twat who keeps letting their dog shit outside my garden gate!

Have you read the posts where people have accused milkmen & business owners of being thieves, travellers, warning people to lock their doors? Or just the OP?

MessOfEyelinerAndSpraypaint · 06/01/2023 21:17

@Ilovelurchers I assume @ILoveeCakes message was at the OP? As the first line asserts that these fb posts should be made illegal. Which is absurd. Society needs to learn to regulate itself, not demand government micromanages every aspect of life. Or you wind up with the prospect of authoritan neck-booting such as that currently being proposed in Scotland (no intent of or actual harm required, just the perceived hurt to the feelings of someone 'expressing gender').
These fb groups are indeed often absurdly xenophobic, but at best can unite a local community into tackling anti-social neighbours.

Thank you for having the patience that I don't!

To the thread - look, if someone says hurty things on FB. Don't call the police - just block it so you don't see it again.

Roseberry1 · 06/01/2023 21:31

On my local fb page last summer, someone put a photo of a man going to door to door asking if they needed work done. The person posting was accusing them of being a con man etc.

When I looked I saw it was my neighbour, who is unwell, and you can clearly see that - think Mr Heckles from friends! In the picture, he was wearing his slippers and a puffer jacket over his clothes- in July. His manner is harmless. I went round and got him but those people on the fb group were commenting vile things and instead of trying to help a clearly unwell elderly man, were instantly "he must be a dangerous criminal" 🙄

He got taken into a home before Christmas.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 06/01/2023 21:35

YANBU. People have killed themselves over this kind of thing. I wish we could just normalise having a conversation again. “Excuse me can you put your rubbish in the bin”. Etc. it’s basically people posturing that feel they should be congratulated for being an arsehole revealing this ‘factual’ information.

The worst time was COVID with the lockdown wankers posting pictures of elderly people sitting on benches. The cunts of the country really did lose their minds

My local facebook group doesn't have those posts. The name and shame posts are truly deserved.

LindorDoubleChoc · 06/01/2023 21:43

Yanbu. It's twattish behaviour and any examples I've seen on my local FB and similar have been deleted thanks to on the ball Admins.

ILoveeCakes · 06/01/2023 21:44

What about the fake attention seeking posts that copy and paste the old trope about there being 2 men in a black van eyeing up dogs to steal?

The van is always black.

TattieBogle12 · 06/01/2023 21:45

Ah, but they’re so entertaining for the rest of us.

🍿

CheesenCrackersmm · 06/01/2023 21:48

When in relation to dogs shitting and owners not picking it up I think it is perfectly acceptable to post and shame.

Calling out people on general littering or suggesting people are criminals when they might be completely ligitimate is going too far.

This is my personal opinion and in no way a legal perspective.

GladAllOver · 06/01/2023 21:48

Facebook passed its Use By date years ago. If you still use it then you just have to accept the shit you'll find there.

RobertJohnsonsShoes · 06/01/2023 21:55

To be fair, I'd name and shame the wanker letting their dog shit on my drive once a week. I'd get posters made.

MugginsOverEre · 06/01/2023 22:02

If an FB post got me the name of the person letting their big dog shit outside the primary school gates, Every. Single. Day. I would be happy to post it back through their letterbox.

healthadvice123 · 06/01/2023 22:09

Well i wouldn't be worried about it as I pick up my dog shit and don't litter or looter outside houses etc

Laquila · 06/01/2023 22:12

This is one of the reasons I stopped using FB - I can't deal with it! The number of "Watch out - seen a dodgy looking van going round with two Eastern European looking blokes in it" posts was Insane. I'm not saying crimes and antisocial behaviour don't happen, but IME the majority of this is people who used to be wankers at school making themselves feel superior.

Pothoswithasparkle · 06/01/2023 22:33

osted blocking a pavement because occasionally I do that to get urgent work post in the post box on time and I literally leave the car for 2 seconds and always check no-one is coming down the pavement, but i am waiting for the day some person snaps a pic and posts it.

Sorry but you simply don't need to block pavement, if you are 2 secs then you can block road... we park on pavememts around mine but that's only because it's basically wider than the road so wheelchairs can pass easily. Secondly, "2 secs" will not get you on sm.

Pothoswithasparkle · 06/01/2023 22:35

People should be called out on littering. My family from central Europe was actually stunned at the amount of litter around

LBFseBrom · 06/01/2023 22:39

I don't think anyone should be shamed publicly, the media of all types is so keen on doing that and it helps nobody.

Rubbish litters, criminals etc should totes be shamed publicly.
It's bit of a shame that it doesn't ripple through local community like it used to. That was the point. You nocked shite, your face was on a shop door, you couldn't ahow up in any pub in vicinty without people telling you off.
I don't think it has such effect today but it can still work in some way

SylviasMotherSaid · 06/01/2023 23:03

an old man from my street got shamed on one of these groups for his so called mistreatment of his puppy and had random women taking photos and videos of him which then resulted in a total pile on . Everyone who actually knows the man and the dog knew he wasn’t mistreating it but he ended up with animal welfare at his door who were totally happy with him and the dog but for a while he ended up having to walk the dog in groups with other neighbours because of these vigilante style keyboard warriors .
the worst in my area is if they hear a helicopter I have no words for how over involved and obsessed they become about why the helicopter is out and usually they make up loads of unhelpful scenarios and nearly always one of them will decide to walk their dog in an effort to see what’s going on .

Georgeskitchen · 06/01/2023 23:12

The worst ones are: " I've got dashcam footage of the car that hit mine at 2am this morning. You have 24 hours to come forward or I'm going to the police." The police will do jackshaft. Just send the ruddy footage to your insurance company and let them deal with it!!

Marmite17 · 06/01/2023 23:29

I think laws should be passed re posting photos online without the permission of those in them.
Minor irritation for me as in spite of knowing I hate it, friend still sometimes posts images with me in them on Facebook. I have full privacy settings. Much prefer WhatsApp.
Nextdoor app is horrendous for privacy. Plus needed to adjust settings to not give random strangers my address. It is useful for eg local plumbers, lost pets. But learnt to my cost that its usually best not to share opinions!
Rights on pics of yourself could reduce bullying. Plus some people do not want to be traced eg domestic violence.
Anyone can take your pic, without your knowledge, and post on the Internet atm. Real violation of privacy. And can be malicious.

RobertaFirmino · 06/01/2023 23:43

I can't be doing with the cat posts. That cat who appears at your back door every day isn't a stray, he turns up because he knows full well he'll get some sliced ham! He isn't called Six Dinner Sid for nothing!
Then there are the breeds who are naturally skinny or hairless. They aren't being neglected for God's sake, that's just what they look like!
