Shaming people on Facebook

AIBU that shaming people on Facebook should be illegal?

I'm on about the ones on local community Facebook groups who post pictures of people.

Example of some from my local:

Image of some man walking his dog with a woman in the early hours. Quite a grainy shot so can't really see their faces.

"Anybody recognise these two? I think they've let their dog poop on my front garden and not picked it up".

Picture of a young lady itting on a field.

"Just seen this young girl throw rubbish on the field. Should be taught some manners"

Picture of a white van with the license plate on show

"Watch out for this van. Seems a bit dodgy knocking on doors"

I know a lot of the time it's about problems like rubbish, littering etc. but I think posting photos of people online is a bit like a witch-hunt. Especially when other people comment aswell.

Try going trail hunting - which is perfectly legal btw.

Photos of my kids have been on hunt sab fb pages with comments calling them cunts and saying they should be tortured to death. People feel justified to have a go at anyone online.

I don't agree with posting photographs of children but don't have any sympathy for adults who go trail hunting.

Since the hunting ban , it's been used as cover for the hunting of foxes.

My Twitter feed yesterday included several photographs of the corpses of foxes which had been killed by hunts (different hunts in different parts of the country). I see them every Saturday.

And then there are photos and videos of hunt monitors and hunt sabs being attacked, out of control hounds causing disruption, hounds being mistreated etc etc

A friend of mine was targeted in the same way.

a local field/play area, there had been several incidents of a man flashing kids. My friend went up there to walk his dog. Some meathead decided that he is obviously dodgy and confronted him. Friend left, he had driven there in his works van with his business name on it. Meathead followed him home, posted pics of his van and his home address on Facebook accusing him of all sorts. Police got involved, but my friends life could have been ripped apart.

I think it depends - we live in quite a wealthy area so it's often targeted by gangs etc. I looked out of the window in the summer to see three men stood on our driveway looking at our cars. As soon as I went out and they realised I was home they scarpered in an old van. I posted on our local group (not very detailed description), having called 111 or whatever it is, and it turned out these same guys had been driving around all day and night and been spotted in people's back gardens/sheds and had stolen some building supplies off someone's driveway. It just made people more vigilant, especially those who were away on holiday etc.

I agree with most of the posts but when there is something genuinely dodgy it's good to know about it!
On our local FB page recently there was a post about dodgy looking men, going around in a white van offering services (they offered to seal my driveway, others to clean their roof etc). Loads of people commented on the post saying they might be legitimate businessmen, there was accusations of racism because they had Irish accents and the OP was accusing them of being travellers etc. Turns out, they were actually dodgy men who scammed an elderly neighbour out of a lot of money, the police were involved and it ended with a police campaign about not trusting door to door salespeople.
I can't help but feel this was a good thing and that people were more vigilant afterwards.

Sometimes it’s the only way to shame these people into changing their behaviour. I saw a post recently where a child’s wheelchair had been stolen by a scrap man. Scrap man then commented saying yes it was me, so what, I got £2 for your (disabled slur) chair and I don’t care. Judging by the comments nobody will ever be giving him any scrap ever again.

That is fucking horrendous.
