To think the family in the On The Beach advert

Are ill-mannered Oafs? The woman carelessly flinging her flip flop so it hits a stranger, the boy child showing obvious pleasure at the girl's ice cream misfortune?
All it says to me is try to avoid anywhere frequented by people who have booked via this outfit as they will be obnoxious.

These adverts make me laugh. All hand in hand leading the way. We all know it isn't a holiday if a child hasn't played up in the airport and refuses to hold your hand 🤣.

SeatonCarew · 17/01/2023 01:24

Airport lounges are there precisely so you can avoid people like these. Infuriates me they are packing them in there.

GreenWheat · 17/01/2023 01:31

I always imagine they don't apply sunscreen and look like shiny lobsters by day three of their holiday.

TeaAndTattoos · 17/01/2023 01:59

I really hate that advert too especially that boy. Advert makes me not want to book a holiday with them.

timeandagain1 · 17/01/2023 05:40

Jez it is an advert. I think it is meant to be a joke (albeit not funny) and I don't think you're meant to like them 🙄. The comments on this thread are classist "a holiday these type of people can afford" and horrible about a child "porky" "ugly".

Catspyjamas17 · 17/01/2023 06:03

Surely it's mean to be a joke at the expense of the very people making snobby and judgy comments here? And a snipe at the perfect families shown on other ads.

Though the comments here clearly indicate it has gone over people's heads. But advertisers seem to consider ads a success if they get people talking about them, for good or bad.

Greenshake · 06/01/2023 00:03

I absolutely hate that advert. I wouldn’t book a holiday with that firm now out of principal.

Me too, not that I’d book with them anyway, they have an awful reputation.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/01/2023 07:35

I haven't seen the advert but it's worth remembering that 'a package holiday' is just a way of booking accommodation, flight and possibly a transfer all together, and gaining extra legal protection from doing so.

The accommodation can be absolutely anything you want - we used OTB to book a small private villa in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, so nothing at all like the 'cheap and cheerful AI' stereotype that no good Mumsnetter would ever consider. Likewise, you could book directly with the feared 'get pissed in the sun while gorging on chips AI' and book your flights separately if that's best for you.

I wouldn't particularly recommend OTB as they don't book your flights straight away, which leads to a nervous few hours if the price changes or flight sells out, but their search engine is very good so definitely worth a look.

Well OP, you won't see families like them on your Viking River Cruise

Really? I’m off to get a brochure then.

Oh yes only very clever and special people can see it's meant to be a joke 😂

I think the joke is meant to be at the expense of other holiday company ads where the families are all perfect looking. It doesn't make it a god and though and it genuinely irritates me that some dick in a suit got paid to make it. It's lazy as a pp said and does a nudge, nudge, wink, wink "them posh people are so stuck up, not like us", when it was made my an ad exec who is likely getting paid a six figure salary to get people to part with their money. The whole thing is 🤢

BudgetBeatrice · 17/01/2023 07:43

Good ad*

Wellnowlookhere · 17/01/2023 07:47

Jesus Christ, you’re a judgemental lot on here, aren’t you? I’m pretty sure this ad isn’t designed to be taken seriously and for all of you talking about the size of the boy, he’s a real kid with feelings who is acting a role, and clearly doing it well since he has wound so many of you up. Whatever his body shape, it’s shit for any adult to slate a kid like that. Especially since so many on MN like to go on (and on) about the mental health of children and young people.
It’s an ad. Give your heads a wobble, and then go back to booking Centre Parcs.

Catspyjamas17 · 17/01/2023 07:47

Well OP, you won't see families like them on your Viking River Cruise

Well OP, you won't see families like them on your Viking River Cruise. No-one under 55 is allowed, surely? Also you have to drive a Honda, listen to Classic FM and buy ready meals for two at M&S.

Weatherwax134 · 17/01/2023 07:49

Oh my gosh I'm so pleased it's not just me! I can't believe someone got paid to say that Brits abroad are inconsiderate shits! I get that a holiday is time to relax and let loose, but the whole ad puts me off booking with them

StopThe · 17/01/2023 07:49

Mumsnet snobbery and fattism at it's finest.

BudgetBeatrice · 17/01/2023 07:51

The as is fat phobic tbf. The as execs have done a number on that kid. But yes, Mumsnet is incredibly fat phobic too. Worst thing about MN

BudgetBeatrice · 17/01/2023 07:52

Omg the ad*

I hate my phone

LadyGAgain · 17/01/2023 08:00

Literally looks like something a team on the apprentice thought was a great idea when they were putting it together. And once in the board room Lord Sugar rips it to shreds coz it's utter shite.

LynneBenfield · 17/01/2023 08:09

The ad is absolutely terrible but the comments on here from (presumably) grown adults about a child’s body are absolutely disgusting.

ParanoidJo · 17/01/2023 09:02

I think some people have got the wrong end of the stick on here thinking commenters are fattist with regard to the boy. It’s more about the fact the advertiser has selected that slightly overweight actor boy and matched it to a narrative of him happy the other girl’s ice cream dropped and being sneery with his own. What is that narrative supposed to be saying? Nothing is by chance. It’s lazy to not read the context of people’s comments.

LadyKenya · 17/01/2023 09:23

Lilyhatesjaz · 16/01/2023 22:48

I hate the ad too but some people are saying things about the boy that are nasty and unkind he is a child.

This. Calling him porky, flabby, and such like. Really not nice. Would they say that about the girl if she was carrying a bit of extra weight I wonderHmm.

So words like porky, and flabby are being used to describe the ice cream incident? Seriously! They are being used to describe the boy, a child. Not nice.

PurplePositivity · 17/01/2023 09:37

It's awful, the worst bit is where the mum kicks off her shoes - hate it and it puts me off booking with them!

porpy · 17/01/2023 09:39

PixieLaLa · 05/01/2023 23:51

YANBU, they remind me of Matilda’s family!

Yes!

itssquidstella · 17/01/2023 09:46

But the boy is extremely overweight and the girl is quite overweight. Whenever the advert comes on, DH and i rant about the normalisation of childhood obesity and how damaging it is. No ethical company should be using fat children in their advertising because it serves to reinforce the dangerous misconception that childhood obesity is acceptable.
