Why do they have to be plastered with make up and have those funny inflated lips. Even Karen Brady is caked on.

Also to add, coming from the public sector, many people simply can't afford "sharp tailoring", that isn't a reflection of their professionalism or aptitude.

Calphurnia88 · 06/01/2023 11:43

Because either the contestants or the producers (or most likely, both) are trying to emulate other successful reality TV shows e.g. TOWIE, Love Island, where women are expected to look glamorous.

Cosmos123 · 06/01/2023 11:56

Women are made to look like inflatable sex dolls asmaybe it gets views.

I thought we had progressed.

I agree. It's really quite depressing

LavenderHillMob · 06/01/2023 14:40

I won't comment on their appearance - but fuck me the squabbling was something else.

Professional women don't do that.

Would like to clear up some of the assumptions made here. As I said in a previous comment I had a close family member go on the show (this was some years ago so things may have changed)

  1. they pick their own clothes but these obvs have to be approved by the show. They have to wear the same clothes for all the boardroom episodes, this is to avoid spoilers in the trailers (as you could work out who leaves on what episode based on what they are wearing)
  2. they do their own hair and make up. They really are woken up by the early phone call saying they are leaving in 10 minutes, but the more savvy candidates can preempt when this will happen based on the film crew setting up, so usually they are already getting ready, and just edited to look like they are just waking up
  3. the show is not ‘scripted’ as such, but is heavily edited and candidates are goaded and forced into certain scenarios. For example whenever you see them ‘inventing’ something, in reality they have a selection of terrible ideas to choose from and then have to pretend they came up with the idea themselves.
  4. they really aren’t terrible people, or at least the ones I knew aren’t. Just edited unfairly, put in impossible situations that are designed to make them look like idiots

I can’t even watch the show anymore just knowing how fake and unfair the whole thing really is

That’s good info. So they pick their own clothes. So either they feel pressured to look a certain way as in the approval by the producers basically ends up telling them what to wear anyway; or there is a lot of peer pressure from the other contestants and a general feeling that flats and trousers won’t cut it; or the producers end up just picking the type of people who look a certain way anyway, so it’s discriminatory.

end result is always there’s a box, and you have to fit in it to get on the show.

I thought we had progressed too but here we have page and pages of women bashing women for wearing heels, wearing too much makeup, wearing fitted dressed, getting lip filler etc.
Yawn. Women can wear what they want.
Women can wear lipgloss and still run their own business.
Women can have fake tits and still have excellent brains.

There is no rule that says women have to wear light makeup or jeans to be taken seriously.

If it’s not a style for you that’s fine, no need for all the degrading comments, “Barbie” “inflatable sex doll” etc.

midgetastic · 06/01/2023 16:09

Young women can wear what they want but when what they want is so different to what men want for themselves , is so expensive and time consuming ,is so unhuman you have to feel sad that women have been brought up and socially conditioned to want to look like that

And I will judge someone looking like that as less likely than an unadulterated person to have a lot of common sense and self awareness- because they are demonstrating to me that they are heavily influenced by social media and consumerism

That's the message they give me by making themselves look like that , sorry if it's not the message they want to be giving out

inappropriateraspberry · 06/01/2023 16:10

@luxxlisbon
I think it's that they portray it as the norm, most series it's all the women bar one dressed like this, and usually with make up and lips to match. Anyone different is edited as the nerd/geek/alternative. Where are all the everyday women in suits, dresses etc but not looking like barbie dolls. It's hard to tell who is who, they all look alike.

Cranarc · 06/01/2023 16:16

VickyEadieofThigh · 05/01/2023 22:06

YANBU.

Also, why do so many of the people who enter this competition appear never to have watched it, given the fact they make the same mistakes every year?

I don't get this either. We used to watch it every year but got sick of it in the end, partly because of this. Whereas the standard on Masterchef, which we also watch every year, just keeps on going up. Clearly those contestants have watched it.

It's pretty sad that women would want fake tits to feel good about themselves. Even sadder that such young women want to alter their appearance so much.

So where are the women contestants who are dressed in flats, without inflated lips and those eyebrows ?

Yes, women can do and wear what they like but highly suspicious they all look like clones.

The whole look is to satisfy a certain appetite. The love island look.

It does not reflect what people normally look like. It also takes away opportunity from those nerdy non makeup wearing women who want to apply. As they simply won't be selected It would seem.

I got a whiff of Katie Price from Karen last night, which is a shame as I think Karen is fantastic.

It’s not glossy and polished, it’s basic and dated. It also looks really bloody uncomfortable.

BraveGoldie · 06/01/2023 17:18

Poor women - first they get pressured to look a certain way. Then they get slagged of .... for looking a certain way..... Hmm

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 06/01/2023 17:23

If you look at the early series, the women dressed much more soberly:

Women on Apprentice
LavenderHillMob · 06/01/2023 17:27

Again I won't criticise the individual women on the show for how they choose to present themselves - but the BBC are sexist shits to present this as women in business.

Things have moved on since Alexis and Chrystal.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 06/01/2023 17:39

My workplace has been in permanent 'casual wear' status since the pandemic, so I have no idea what women wear as business dress in 2022/2023 - anyone who works in an office that still requires businesswear, is it bright dresses and so on now, or is it dark or grey suits as I remember it?

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 06/01/2023 17:43

I haven't seen a woman in a suit in years in tech where I work.

We are not blaming the women but it is odd the BBC has only selected this 'look' of candidates.

Except the lady with Bob cut.

I have not noticed women in the city who all have this style of appearance.

Did noone else apply?

Odd they have the same taste in clothes and style.

Cosmos123 · 06/01/2023 17:52

Smart casual is the norm.

Worked for 2 female Chief Executives.

Both great leaders.

Never seen them dressed like this.
Smart, tidy yes.
Inflated 💋, bouncy hair, sculptured make up. Nope

Its a great example of societies expectations of women here and inequality that females face. Compare the female and male contestants. Look at the money spent, time spent, and likely discomfort the females would experience . Surgical procedures, heavy makeup, dressed hair and extensions, tight clothing, high heels etc etc. This is all sold to them via social media, reality tv and men.

Disappointing Sugar champions this.

TurkeyTorquayUruguayMozzarella · 06/01/2023 19:18

Even in the sober business attire pic example, women show a bit more neck, chest, cleavage sometimes, ankles, calves, legs. Men are covered from the jugular notch to their toes. Flat shoes they can run in, practical trousers, layers they can take off (shirt, waist coat maybe, blazer), hair out of the way, no make up to take up time in the morning.

There's always been inequality and differences in how the genders dress.

TurkeyTorquayUruguayMozzarella · 06/01/2023 19:21

Even the length of men's blazers or jackets is flattering, it hides the bum meanwhile women's body is so defined even when covered up it's nipped at the waist, Jacket is short shows her hips and bum. Women are actually sexualised even in the much more conservative photo up there, their body is up for scrutiny where as the blokes, it's really only the height you notice about their body in a suit.

I find it weird we're getting to a stage where in real life heels are starting to look quite dated and rejected in the work place (I know I know not everyone) but on the Apprentice they go into full Barbie mode. It's hard to take them seriously.

Barbie is the word indeed.
