When to take down Christmas decorations?

ProcrastinatingUntilNextYear · 05/01/2023 10:12

I’ve had so much bad luck that I don’t want to risk anymore and so I want to take down the Christmas decorations on the ‘right’ day this year. Do they come down today (5th) or tomorrow 6th?

YABU - they come down tomorrow (6th)
YANBU - they come down today (5th)

27th December for me

pinkorchid1 · 05/01/2023 10:13

YABU it doesn't matter. I took mine down on the 2nd.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/01/2023 10:13

They come down when you like. This has no bearing on luck.

Purs usually come down 30/31 Dec as I like to go into the new year with a tidy living room.

Woahtherehoney · 05/01/2023 10:14

I didn’t think it mattered when they come down as long as it’s before the 6th. Mine came down on the 27th as I was giving my house a deep clean after Christmas.

Dotjones · 05/01/2023 10:14

Jan 1st unless you're out that day, in which case 2nd is OK.

AngelicInnocent · 05/01/2023 10:14

Traditionally its on the 12th night. That is 5th

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 05/01/2023 10:15

Blimey, no idea, latest ever for me was 1st Jan

cheshirecatssmile · 05/01/2023 10:15

Only my tree left.
It took 2 days to put up and decorate but probs only 30mins to take down.
Will do either today or tomorrow depending on energy levels . Bloody covid

BettyOBarley · 05/01/2023 10:16

Yes traditionally 5th.

Mine didn't last that long though, once the kids are back/I'm back at work Christmas is over in this house!

pilates · 05/01/2023 10:16

Today - sooner the better. I like mine down, good clean and back in the loft for the start of the new year.

Ponoka7 · 05/01/2023 10:16

If you want to go by twelfth night then it's tonight. I follow the Candlemas tradition for greenery/natural decorations, so my door wreath etc won't be coming down until February 2nd.

Slimjimtobe · 05/01/2023 10:17

Mine are down except for the crib which I will do tomorrow night

meatyryvita · 05/01/2023 10:17

I took ours down on the 30th of December. I like to start the New Year focussed on what's to come and it just doesn't feel Christmassy anymore at that stage, so I don't feel the need to keep them up.

Abigail69 · 05/01/2023 10:17

Jan 1st, I insist. If it was up to me, I'd take them down 27th Dec

Anisina · 05/01/2023 10:19

Taking your Christmas decorations down early will not bring you bad luck. Do you think that people who had bad things happen to them last year wouldn't have had those things happen if only they had left the decorations up a few more days?

GreenManalishi · 05/01/2023 10:25

Traditonally it's the twelfth night, it's to do with Advent, and it's therefore religious. The bad luck connotation probably came about in order to urge people to do the "right thing", but is in reality nonsense.

There's another part to it, which is if you don't take them down by the twelfth night, it's back luck NOT to leave them up until Shrove Tuesday, which is pancake day.

And if you believe that you'll believe anything. Take them down when you want.

Monkeytapper · 05/01/2023 10:27

27th here

KimberleyClark · 05/01/2023 10:28

Tomorrow.

TotallyAverage · 05/01/2023 10:30

Think it's meant to be the 5th but we're taking ours down this weekend. I'd happily keep them up longer but we're going away on holiday next week so will get them all packed away before we go.

TheMousePipes · 05/01/2023 10:31

Tonight is tradition, but we take ours down earlier so that back to school has a clear day before it to change the mindset. That said, we keep a lot of fairy lights and subtle sparkle until Imbolc, which is the 2nd February.

MaverickGooseGoose · 05/01/2023 10:32

Took them down at the weekend as had time to do it then.

Winterfellismyhome · 05/01/2023 10:33

Mine came down on boxing day Blush

justasoul · 05/01/2023 10:34

King’s Day for me, so tomorrow.

Joystir59 · 05/01/2023 10:34

27th for me. Take them down to suit your own wishes and feelings.

justasoul · 05/01/2023 10:34

That was meant to be Kings’ Day 🫣
