When to take down Christmas decorations?

ProcrastinatingUntilNextYear · 05/01/2023 10:12

I’ve had so much bad luck that I don’t want to risk anymore and so I want to take down the Christmas decorations on the ‘right’ day this year. Do they come down today (5th) or tomorrow 6th?

YABU - they come down tomorrow (6th)
YANBU - they come down today (5th)

I took them down on Sunday as we are away until tomorrow. I left my wreath on the door and a small Nativity scene out to cover all bases!

ShesThunderstorms · 05/01/2023 12:50

I took mine down on the 28th and that seems normal-ish in my circle of friends/family.
I do find that people on here get quite shocked about that and think that everyone should leave them up until the 6th, but if I'm being honest, I don't celebrate Christmas for the religious element, it's the food and time off work for me! I actually had to Google what the 12th night was a few weeks ago after seeing it mentioned so much on here.
I find older people like to leave them up until the "traditional" 6th too.

ArtixLynx · 05/01/2023 12:51

we've always gone by the should be done by midnight on the 5th, so we usually take them down around 3/4th usually, takes us a couple of days!

I think its a bit grinchy taking them down boxing day/27th, we've always kept them up over NYE.. i'm always sad when the tree goes away, i love having the lights on, makes the house feel warmer/friendlier.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 05/01/2023 12:53

If you are being guided by superstition, I'd get them down today to be on the safe side.

Season0fTheWitch · 05/01/2023 12:54

I had time so I did mine today, I was going to leave them up longer but can't bare the thought of all the dust collecting on everything!

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 05/01/2023 12:54

My mum used to say they were to be taken down between dusk on 12th day of Christmas (today) and dusk the following day.

I'm taking mine down tomorrow - I've always taken them down on the 6th of January.

Redglitter · 05/01/2023 12:56

I've been working so much I feel I've hardly had time to enjoy it so I'll probably wait til next week

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/01/2023 12:58

We are keeping ours up til 8th this year so that they are up for orthodox Christmas, due to having Ukrainian guests in our wider family.

So if we get back luck we get it.

Tree won’t last much longer than that though ( put it up later than usual on purpose)

Choconut · 05/01/2023 12:59

We're taking ours down when it's convenient, which is this weekend. Any perceived god or bad luck is purely coincidental

stargirl1701 · 05/01/2023 12:59

5th - Twelfth Night

6th - Epiphany

2nd Feb - Candlemas

Any of these are traditional dates. We usually go for Twelfth Night but it'll be Epiphany this year.

Oblomov22 · 05/01/2023 13:06

Still haven't done mine!

ProcrastinatingUntilNextYear · 05/01/2023 13:17

Thank you for all of your responses!
I have enjoyed reading all of your traditions. I’ve also learnt more than I was expecting with Candlemas and King’s day that I have to admit, I have not heard of before.
The voting is completely split 50/50, so I think I will take the tree and decorations down tonight to be in the middle, and will leave the fairy lights up until Candlemas to brighten up the evenings.

I have to admit to using Kings’ Day as couldn’t remember Epiphany so just translated from my mother language Blush

KimberleyClark · 06/01/2023 15:46

Just taken mine down. I’m thinking of getting one of those tall slim trees next year. Pencil I think they are called. They take up less space and look elegant I think.

Natsku · 06/01/2023 15:54

Took ours down today, its the last public holiday of Christmas in my country so is the perfect day for taking the decorations down and sticking the tree out by the wheelie bin for the binmen to take on Monday. Though sometimes I think about doing it by the older tradition of ending Christmas on the 13th of Jan, which is day of Nuuttipukki, the creepy food and drink stealing version of Santa.

Peridot1 · 06/01/2023 15:58

We are nearly done. I’ve given up now though until tomorrow as am shattered. Both trees are now bare of decorations and one is bare of lights. The other is prelit but I’ve unplugged it. I’m trying to condense the amount we have as it takes ages to put up and take down and put away.

came down New Year's Day here, New Year's Day means fresh start/ blitzed house for me

One year we did keep it up till March because it was so pretty.

You've just given me something to aim for! I made it to mid-Feb last year, but the tree was beginning to look dead by then so I had to take it down.

It means a hangover for me 😂

BogRollBOGOF · 06/01/2023 16:15

Usually the 6th for me although tomorrow being Saturday, I'll put them away then. It's still the holidays as the DCs aren't back to school on Monday so it's still been out of routine all week, and I'd much rather gently wind down the festive period than plunge myself into dreary winter long before normality resumes.

Taking decorations down on the 27th is like declaring you're going on a diet on Good Friday.

ProcrastinatingUntilNextYear · 06/01/2023 20:36

I started taking them down last night and finished this morning, so I ended up doing them on both days . The house looks so bare now 😭
