And what's your reasons? Just had a crazy idea to move over as I don't have any commitments here and life is getting boring for me here

I have lived in the UK for over thirty years in total, including ten in London. I also did ten years in Ireland before moving to Perth nine years ago. Life here is so much better. The WA economy is booming, our wages are more than double what we would get in the UK. We have a four-bed house with a pool five mins from the beach and an easy commute to the CBD. My power bill is $30 a week as we have solar. Life is very laid back. This is my last day of two weeks Xmas hols, mostly spent between beach bbq and pool, it has been bliss! When I talk to friends back home freezing their tits off and worrying about switching the heating on, it's a bit of a no-brainer really! Oh and as for snakes and spiders, I've never seen a snake outside the zoo, and we get the pest guy out to sort the spiders out every year so no problem there either. Of course, nowhere is perfect, but life here is pretty peachy, and my only regret is that I didn't move here sooner. So if you get a chance, go for it! Just don't expect UK in the sun though, its really isn't!

Aussiegirl123456 · 03/01/2023 05:35

Couldn’t make it up!
I post bragging I’ve barely ever seen any snakes or spiders since I’ve lived here. Went to go outside to lay in the sun and this little fella is by my back door!
I have just relocated it into the bush land behind our house, he/she was friendly. I almost didn’t move to Aus because I was scared of snakes. Look at me now!
Non venomous carpet python.

Cuppasoupmonster · 03/01/2023 05:38

ARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

runs screaming, slams door, screeches off in car

Gremlinsateit · 03/01/2023 05:39

Oh I love non-venomous pythons, they are so warm and soft to hold 😂

Cuppasoupmonster · 03/01/2023 05:40

if you’re too scared to move it is there someone you can call like pest control?

Gremlinsateit · 03/01/2023 05:41

You call a wildlife rescue service. Snakes are protected.

Gremlinsateit · 03/01/2023 05:42

Hey @Aussiegirl123456 you should spam the thread with more snake pictures - that should sort the sheep from the goats 😂

Oh of course I didn’t mean kill it! Maybe a kindly neighbour would have more balls than me 😂

Aussiegirl123456 · 03/01/2023 05:46

This one was a while back and I definitely didn’t go anywhere near this one as was huge!
Again, non venomous.

I lived on acreage for 5 years and never saw any snakes, as soon as I moved to suburbia, these are the two I’ve seen. Both in my garden, typical!

But honestly, the only thing I’m scared of is magpies. And plovers. And some Aussie drivers. If you can survive those then you can survive anything haha!

Would you rather stay in U.K. or aus

Yeah, there’s usually snake catchers in every suburb.

Did I mention the coffee is amazing here?!

Gremlinsateit · 03/01/2023 05:47

It’s ok, I’m mostly teasing 😄 In my state you would call an organisation called WIRES to ask for advice. You probably wouldn’t ask a neighbour as we are not all quite as blasé as @Aussiegirl123456 Also, unless you are very familiar, it’s safest to assume the wildlife is venomous.

Oh lord yes, I’d take a snake over a ute driver any day!

Australia is fucking awful in every way possible. Stay where you are.

Is that what you really think or you live there and don't want people moving there?

Endlesssummer2022 · 03/01/2023 05:54

I’m a born and bred Londoner who’s married to an Australian. We both LOVE London. London in the summer cannot be beaten. However, we’ve fallen out of love with the UK due to the national politics and the fact people seem to have given up and are accepting lower standards of living whilst our betters get ever richer. We don’t want this for us or our kids.

I’m currently in Australia, Victoria, seeing the in-laws and what strikes me is that it’s a country looking to the future, whereas the UK feels increasingly fixated on the past. Many of the issues being faced in the UK, e.g. the NHS are avoidable but people keep voting for absolute bullshit.

We were viewing properties earlier with a view to moving across in a couple of years.

Interestingly every time I’ve discussed Australia with acquaintances, they’ve brought up racism. I’m mixed race (black/white) as are our kids. My SIL here is Asian. I can say hand on heart that this was a bigger issue a couple of decades ago, however, I feel safer and more accepted/welcome here than in many areas of the UK e.g some areas of Kent.

The people here are largely positive and looking to the future, it’s just a different vibe and more in line for what I want for my kids.

The cost of living is higher but wages are higher and actually emphasise how low wages are in the UK. We’ll never sell our home in London though. I will always love it and we’d like the option to move back and have a base for our kids.

What @KnickerlessParsons said about them being not very nice to the indigenous populations. That’s why I couldn’t stay. The UK is bloody fantastic in comparison. Also weather. Actually far easier to have a healthy outdoor lifestyle here in our temperate climate than in Oz

When did you last visit Australia - 1983? Yes, anywhere that was invaded by the British in the past has huge inequity issues for first nations people. However please don't discount the efforts that are being made in Australia to recognise indigenous culture and close the health gap.

UK.

Australia is full of racists and poisonous insects/arachnids.

Yeah, @RambamThankyouMam as if the UK doesn't have Nigel Farages, UKIP and Brexit..... Oh wait.🙄

Taswegian · 03/01/2023 06:08

Magpies don’t swoop in Tassie!

I wouldn't consider moving there myself, mostly because I have the impression everything is very spread out compared to here - I remember someone explaining to me that where she lived was considered part of Melbourne even though it was a 30 minute train journey from the city centre - and I can't drive. Plus the cost of rent is insane even by UK standards, and it's a long way from any other countries (except New Zealand), and if I was there for more than a few years I think I'd miss being able to go on short holidays abroad. It does look like an incredible country though and I hope to visit one day for sure, it just wouldn't be where I'd choose to live personally.

But that's the same as London. You can still life somewhere classed as London but be a 30 minute train ride away!

SmokeyPaprika · 03/01/2023 06:11

Is inner Manchester like living in the western isles?
Are you going to Sydney or somewhere in the outback?

Very difficult to compare -
one thing, everything is far apart in Australia

That’s it I’m locking the doors and closing the curtains 😆

timetogetlost · 03/01/2023 06:35

Uk
So much better connected, near so much cultural and linguistic diversity in Europe. Kinder climate. Aus is so far away from everything and much less interesting culturally.
I've lived in both.

StartupRepair · 03/01/2023 06:37

Last year Australia voted out its cruel Trumplite government and voted in a smart progressive government with a strong agenda for climate action and an indigenous voice to Parliament.
Australia is not like the UK with sunshine. It is its own richly diverse ancient and modern nation.

BlastedPimples · 03/01/2023 06:40

Go for it. Australia has lots to offer.

The U.K. is dying.

Whatmarbles · 03/01/2023 06:42

UK.
The weather in Aus would be enough reason for me.

HangingOver · 03/01/2023 06:43

I love Australia (here at the moment) but I couldn't do 88 days on a farm, it sounds backbreaking. The six month tourist visas are fab for escaping the UK winter. Although it's 38 degrees here today so I'm lying down lol
