Steve Barclay, the Health Secretary today announced on twitter that people should download the Couch to 5k app to reduce pressure on the NHS.

Do your fucking job, Steve. And Rishi, show some leadership. You bloody wanted this job so badly, where have you gone?

The maths thing is bollocks though, it's not going to happen and they know it's not going to happen. They're throwing it out there as a distraction and to give Rishi something to talk about that isn't the binfire that is the state of the country.

SirMingeALot · 05/01/2023 07:55

Yeah, there's not a chance in hell of them recruiting enough teachers for that plan. It's a distraction technique.

SmokeyPaprika · 05/01/2023 08:01

Yes, probably but they could introduce some online stuff for motivated kids.
I attended a graduation ceremony at Imperial a few years back, this was post grad Phds etc, and I would guess 90% of the students were Chinese (they had their names read out badly ).

Piggywaspushed · 05/01/2023 08:24

The timeline for the maths thing is also during the next parliament, so some way off!!

Tygger · 05/01/2023 09:01

We taxpayers are putting a massive amount of money into the NHS, where's it all going? Those of you who want to spend more money need to ask yourself - what health service do you want, how much will cost and how much you're prepared to pay. I would like a referendum on the NHS and how it's funded, we should benchmark the better healthcare systems, there are a number of them and then be asked to choose which level of service we're prepared to fund.

Ooh look, a nice side by side comparison of the NHS inside and outside of the EU by the honest folk from Leave EU.

If only the NHS was as 'bad' now as it was in the video showing how it was when we were in the EU.

That video is fascinating in light of what we know now. I wonder what people who fell for that are thinking now. No-one with half a brain is going to fall for the "Blame it all on Covid" excuse.

But we are not, it was pointed out recently that the additional 14bn the Govt is putting in over the next 2 years is less than half what it should be if it were bench marked against EU health systems.

As for a vote, you really want non medical people to decide what our health service should look like? Really?

We went into the pandemic with the lowest number nurses/beds and most deprived health system in Europe, this is why we are in such a mess.

We need to get the NHS back up to 2019 levels of service, then look at reform and the quickest way to do that is fund social care.

MissyB1 · 05/01/2023 09:43

If we want to get the NHS back up to 2019 levels of service

Crikey that’s setting the bar low 🙁 can we aim to get it back to 2008 levels instead please.

SmokeyPaprika · 05/01/2023 09:47

What we should march in the Streets demanding is a coalition of 2lab, 2cons, 1libdem, 1green and 1 independent MPs-to get together and devise a future for the nhs.

Hanging for anyone who leaks details.
And they stick at it , taking advice from many and any experts, for 3months till it’s done.

Can't be done because one party wants the NHS gone, just a AE service only.

You need a consensus on whether we should have an NHS first and that would require the Tories to become a different party.

Sunak doesn't even use an NHS GP.

Tygger · 05/01/2023 10:03

Yes let's compare the NHS to the best health care systems, they are without exception broadly private health care systems where most people have a mixture of tax payer funded and private insurance, no other country copies the NHS, I wonder why?

Tygger · 05/01/2023 10:04

You mean liebour and fiasco's like the North Staffordshire Trust?

Tygger · 05/01/2023 10:06

Yes as a taxpayer I want to have a say in how my money is spent.

I agree. And I suspect (or at least hope) that there are at least two Tories that could be found who do believe in, and want, a fully functioning NHS.

This is much bigger (and much too important) for one political party to deal with.

But that isn't true.

Almost all EU health services are tax payer/employer funded.

France for example has state run hospitals and privately run cliniques, which a GP can refer too.

Portugal, Spain and Italy very similar to UK, as is NZ.

However, until nursing and social care work is seen as worthwhile and well paid careers, we will never have the staff to have a functioning health service, with what ever system we might chose.

We cannot up root and rebuild the NHS whilst still maintaining the very poor services we have atm either, which is why i said we need a basic NHS first i.e 2019 levels.

Tygger · 05/01/2023 10:17

Your wrong, I'm in Portugal and the majority of people have private health care, friends in France have private health insurance, in the RoI they pay to see a doctor as they do in Australia. The French also pay higher taxes, I'm not against you paying more N.I. as I'm now retired so don't pay it, but it's not a question of just more money, it's a question of what is the NHS doing with the money? The problem is, you may want to investigate this, nationalised industries are corot inefficient and lack focus on the customers. I do agree with others tha liebours PFI is an unmitigated disaster.

Tygger · 05/01/2023 10:04

There have been numerous NHS scandals and maternity ones under the Tories too as well as Labour, Shrewsbury was a terrible one, from 2003 to 2019, MH scandals in the south of England, PPE scandals... waste waste waste.

We vote for parties that will carry out the broad range of our wishes.
Having a vote on each and every Govt dept would be be madness.

However, if your going to be childish and call Labour Liebour, then i'm out, i can ague with my 6 year old niece if i want immature responses.

GPTec1 · 05/01/2023 10:21

If your in Portugal, whats the NHS got to do with you?

Well if you have 2 labs, 2cons etc as I suggest it won’t matter what the cons want as they’ll be outnumbered.

The whole point of cross party agreement is, well, cross party agreement.
Plus a sitting Govt isn't going to go into a process where they are out numbered.

Otherwise we have a change of govt and the Cons get back in and rip it all up, which is exactly what they did in 2010, it took until about 2016 before all previously hit NHS targets started to be missed, some then abandoned.

SmokeyPaprika · 05/01/2023 11:57

I said in my first post we should march in the streets - not write a letter to Rishi - I would think the Cons would be quite amenable to an arrangement in which blame can be shared.

L1ttledrummergirl · 05/01/2023 12:29

@Tygger I would question the motives of a Portuguese lawyer advocating for a private health care system in the UK. Especially when they start by claiming to be a UK taxpayer, yet have a poor grasp of English grammar.

justasking111 · 05/01/2023 13:16

Once Upon a time elderly people moved permanently into hotels. Three meals a day a room and a lift. We've got nearly 200 immigrants illegal in a four star hotel. The hotel are charging 1k a week per guest.

Now I've worked in hotels, had guests that come four times a year. They've been taken ill there, died there. I have wondered if taking over a hotel or even a floor with carers in place wouldn't be a solution for bed blockers who aren't in need of a nursing home but do need an eye kept on them.

We have a hotel for the blind that works well here so it's doable

@SmokeyPaprika never mind that young people's mental health is shot and services are have been stripped back and ripping at the seams under this serve serving regime, let's talk about maths to 18.

Given the bigger crisis it's akin to people starving, calling out for bread and Marie Antointette talking to them about cake.
