To Wash DH's Stuff With Mine

TheShellBeach · 02/01/2023 14:01

My NDN invited me over for coffee this morning and a woman I've never met before was telling me that she washes her DH's underpants separately from the rest of the washing, as she "doesn't want her stuff to be contaminated with his pants".

They have children, so it seems that she's been "contaminated" by contact with her husband's body more than once in her life.

AIBU to think it's weird? I wash our clothes together. I thought everyone did.

I have banned DH from washing anything of mine because he takes no notice of washing instructions.

My dh likes to cut the labels off as he finds them annoying. So lots of fun sometimes working out what programmevto use.

I mean - mine also leaves tissues in the pockets because he's an idiot, but after 30 years or so I am used to it......................and I remove them.

That is so depressing, washing a man’s clothes for 30 years. Hopefully he cooks for you or something.

JaneJeffer · 02/01/2023 16:59

Labels are annoying. Some of them seem to be made from razor blades. I cut them off too but i memorise the instructions first!

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/01/2023 17:06

DH was a baker when I first moved in with him . His bakery whites were the only items that had their own wash but that was because they got bits of dried on dough and jam on them . They were washed at 90°c.

Probablymagrat · 02/01/2023 17:11

I'd only separate things like work overalls, but thats because they are so filthy, not because they belong to DH or DS.

LunaRegis · 02/01/2023 17:15

😆

I’ve read many a thread on MN where she does her washing & he does his.

Lcb123 · 02/01/2023 17:18

I find that very weird. I only separate by darks/whites. Just do a load when the basket is full!

That's how it's done in our house!

Bluekerfuffle · 02/01/2023 17:26

Are his pants particularly contaminated?

Oh we share all the housework equally.
He does all the floors (washes or hoovers them every day) and all the washing up.
He cooks breakfast and I cook dinner, but he washes both up.

He also does the garden, empties the bins and gets the shopping.

I have no complaints. I actually quite like doing the washing.

I sometimes but my clothes in with a nappy wash - you either trust your washing machine to make everything clean, or you don't!

UWhatNow · 02/01/2023 17:35

“I am the only women in a house full of males and, while I don't technically separate, when there is a massive pile that is clearly going to go over 2 washes I do tend to put my stuff and a couple of towels in first😁- particularly if the pile includes older teens night out clothes, youngest teens football and rubgy clothes and anyone's post gym workout clothes. DP isn't really the problem here!”

And yet funny how you’re the only woman in a house full of males but the responsibility for all the laundry seemingly falls to you….

These threads depress me - it’s 2022 and so many women still firmly in the 1950s mindset that washing clothes is solely a woman’s job. 🙄

UWhatNow · 02/01/2023 17:36

2023 now! Even worse… 😩

Pothoswithasparkle · 02/01/2023 17:36

Valid8me · 02/01/2023 14:18

Sorry.
I just meant if she was going to separate out the underpants and wash them separately the machine would not be very full unless the DH had about fifty pairs.

I can imagine some lazy bloke doing just that to be honest Grin buying 50 pairs and washing them every 6 weeks or so when he ran out!

I would do that.
For the environment 😂 fill up the wash innit😂

MajorCarolDanvers · 02/01/2023 17:40

Lol wash it altogether

Me too. And I include adult son's washing too when he is home from university which is a mortal sin on MN and will lead him to being a useless manchild.

I remember being in hospital after having my eldest. My dh sat on the edge of my bed & a nurse told him off (cross contamination) he howled with laughter & pointed to baby & said it was a bit late for that Grin

I can't imagine how much energy would be wasted doing separate loads of laundry

That would have been the outside of his trousers. He might have been sitting on public transport. Or got a load of bacteria from toilet floor etc

SkylightSkylight · 02/01/2023 17:48

Cuwins · 02/01/2023 14:56

I have never seen the point. My mum never does either- although I think she used to wash my white school shirts separately. Nobody in my house wears white shirts now.

@cuwins. Because I like my whites white, you can tell when people do mixed loads.

i further separate out colours too, your head would explode 🤯😂

Fairislefandango · 02/01/2023 17:49

Not necessarily. When I worked part time and dh worked full time, I did all the washing (but not all household tasks). Now we're both ft, we both do the washing. As long as the chores are shared equally according to the available time each partner has, it's not a 1950s mindset if the woman happens to do all the washing.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 02/01/2023 15:08

I seem to remember reading or being told about an e-coli outbreak on a cruise ship which was linked to tea towels being washed together with towels/bedding.

@FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar

i dry 'used' t towels & dishcloths then they go in a separate kitchen basket, when there's enough of them (doesn't take long here!!) I soak them in Dettol Cleanse & they get washed in one load by themselves. Almost always on a day they will line dry outside, on an airer by the radiator if not (no dryer here).

There's no way I'd wash them with clothes or bath towels.

WilsonMilson · 02/01/2023 15:09

She’s either mental, or her DH has atrocious skid marks.

Either way, weird

All I can think of is Jim Royle’s pants in the caravan episode of the Royle family 😵

Seriously though, I’ve got two kids under two, I don’t have time to sort laundry to that extent! I sort by colour and delicates etc and that’s your lot. If I need to wash something a bit more grim, I chuck in some Dettol laundry cleanser…we are all still alive!

JugglingJanuary · 02/01/2023 18:11

@UWhatNow

maybe things wouldn't 'depress' you so much if you thought outside the lazy box!!

nothing to do with being female!! I do the laundry because I have a way I like it done & he would do it differently and why should he do it my way when he thinks his way is just fine?!?!

He cleans the cars every weekend because he thinks it's important & he's happy to do them.

I do the online shop because I LIKE to be in control if it - not because he can't.

we both cook, we both clean, we both take care of the garden. I tend to do the bins because my timing/bin collection makes it easier. He tends to do the heavy jobs (because he's a lot taller & stronger than me).

nothing to do with what's in our pants, pants that are happily washed together.

AdoraBell · 02/01/2023 18:17

YANBU. She can do it her way, you do it your way.

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/01/2023 18:21

I didnt use to wash my exps clothes with mine and the kids stuff. Unless really dirty which is rare , I.wash our stuff at 30.

Xp is in the building trade and owned abkut 2 pairs of trousers so each one was work.to death 5 days a week onto a building site. Then hed wear it to his hobby on a Saturday where he also got smelly and dirty. That grubby, gritty, smelly heap of clothing would just make everything else in the wash dirty so he would have to wash it separately. I.wasnt gonna ruin everyone else's clothes with high temperatures and extended washing programs.

I bet its cos his pants are disgusting. Its the only logical reason

LozzaChops101 · 02/01/2023 18:29

I get the heebies about sharing a load of washing, but I do force myself to do it because I know it’s bonkers not to 🙈
