And hung it out.

Are we doomed (YANBU)? Or is it Superstitious claptrap (YABU)?

Is it possible he’s having an affair? Washing scent of other woman off clothes

Imagine living a life where these are your thought processes?! You must be exhausted with paranoia and self doubt.

🙄
I do think the thread is that serious love. It's a lighthearted thread about an old superstition

Yes thanks I am aware of that. It was a bit of a joke at how everything is “he’s having an affair” on MN.

user1497787065 · 01/01/2023 12:07

My mother's line was 'If you wash on New Years Day you wash one of the family away'

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/01/2023 12:07

I usually ignored it, but this year I dont want to risk any bad luck after a shit 2022 so not risking it 🤣

Theunamedcat · 01/01/2023 12:07

I try to start the year as I mean to go on so we woke up to a clean house this morning no washing in my basket but it is in the tumble dryer so no-one is perfect 😂
I spent yesterday putting things "away" and throwing out rubbish today I won't empty my bin or do washing or ironing apparently your not even supposed to wash the floor on new years for fear of washing someone's life away! Ds (sen) has poor aim so I won't stick to that one but the relaxing and enjoying family I will religiously stick to today

SauvignonBlanche · 01/01/2023 12:08

Leave the bastard 😱
No washing being done here.

fnfnf · 01/01/2023 12:22

Never heard of this. Did some laundry this morning. 🤷

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 01/01/2023 12:23

As a result of this thread, I have put a wash on 😂

HelpMeGetThrough · 01/01/2023 12:27

I've just put a towel wash on. Eldest keeps chucking up, silly bugger, he'll learn.

Pelo22 · 01/01/2023 12:31

My dad did mine yesterday
"Can it not wait until tomorrow?" I got
Me "it's new years DAY!"
Dad "oh yeah, I'll put it on now then"
Grin

It's one superstition I always stuck by, no idea why

CharlotteRose90 · 01/01/2023 12:45

Oh no. I wasn’t superstitious but after the shittest year of my life I gave in. I ate 12 grapes at midnight, no washing or cleaning will be done today and I’m waiting till my brother comes round so he can be the first person to enter my house . I need any good luck I can take.

DNBU · 01/01/2023 13:06

You are all extremely odd

Rowgtfc72 · 01/01/2023 13:10

I made dh put the washer on but I hung it out.
We also washed the puppy. Where does that leave us?

blissbloob · 01/01/2023 13:14

Well we've been warned from kids not to do any washing on New Year's Day because 'wash clothes on New Year's Day wash a member of your family away'
Superstitions is powerful because it preys in anxiety I suppose
That being said my washing machine is staying firmly off
When you've had it drummed into you for multiple years it's hard to change Grin

Bigdamnheroes · 01/01/2023 13:15

Has he taken a covid test?

AuntieStella · 01/01/2023 09:53

DDOOOOMMED!!

Of course I don't really believe it, but I still wouldn't do it

This totally

ShornTheSheeep · 01/01/2023 13:25

The saying for me is 'if you wash on New Year's Day, you wash a member of your family away.'

So I don't wash on New Year's Day 😀

PriamFarrl · 01/01/2023 13:27

I remember explaining to a friend who had grown up in India about taking down Christmas decorations by the 6th of January otherwise it’s bad luck. Her response was ‘who is bringing this bad luck?’ Which j think is a good point.

I also thought about my neighbours, who is a refugee and has 5 children including twin babies. I imagine that she has never heard of this expression and I guess with that many children her washing machine must run every day! So if my neighbour does this with all innocence on NYD then does she get bad luck? Is this more a superstition brought in to give women a day off?

Also, I’m willing to bet many of us wash our hair during our periods. A couple of generations ago that would have been a complete no no.

BloaterW1 · 01/01/2023 13:36

Anyone need to do a wash I've some magic beans that will ward off the bad luck. DM for a good price.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/01/2023 13:40

marmitegirl01 · 01/01/2023 09:49

Most women on here would give their second born if their other half did this!!! 🤣

Are you stuck in the 1950s?

TimBoothseyes · 01/01/2023 13:41

The only time I didn't do any washing on NYD in the last 15 or so years was January 1st 2020......I will put the washing on even if it's just for 1 t-towel and a pair of socks from now on.

TimeToFlyNow · 01/01/2023 13:45

BeyondMyWits · 01/01/2023 10:12

My mum used to believe in all this stuff (coincidentally died on new year's day 3 years ago). But she'd be mortified if anyone had to do washing on NY day. The house had to be thoroughly cleaned, top to bottom, laundry baskets emptied before the stroke of midnight NYEve. The first person to enter the door had to be tall and dark (never red haired) and all sorts of other crap I can't remember about coal and suchlike...

Ahh yeah, I forgotten all the other superstitions around nyd my great gran always talked about it

I don't actually believe if you wash on nyd you'll wash someone away but I still don't seem able to bring myself to put a wash on 🤣

Otterock · 01/01/2023 13:47

Already done a load and hung it out. Never heard of this superstition

JaneJeffer · 01/01/2023 13:49

and no, I don’t think you get a choice of which one

@Craftycorvid Grin

Chikapu · 01/01/2023 13:51

How ridiculous to think that doing the laundry is going to kill someone.
