And hung it out.

Are we doomed (YANBU)? Or is it Superstitious claptrap (YABU)?

Clear blue skies here so I've just put a load on. Never heard of the superstition

Geepee71 · 01/01/2023 10:40

I have avoided laundry today, part superstition, part laziness.

The dishwasher is merrily chugging away though.

poefaced · 01/01/2023 10:41

FasterthanBolt · 01/01/2023 10:15

It's not bad weather where we are and I have a load that could go on. However, MIL would kill me, she 'phones us every New Year's Day to check we're not doing any washing!

All the more reason to out a load on. Ignore her.

JimJamJolly · 01/01/2023 10:42

I've got my 2nd load on and will probably put on a 3rd. We've been away for a few days and if I don't make a start today, I'll never catch up when we're back at work/school.

I will admit, I always salute a single magpie, but don't believe/follow other superstitions (although don't walk under ladders - but that's more common sense!)

purpledalmation · 01/01/2023 10:19

I'm sure I read somewhere, men using a washing machine and washing line is a sign of early pregnancy. A bit like nesting.

Bonkers. My DH does more washing than I do! I'm not perma-pregnant thank god!

Fameinaframe · 01/01/2023 10:44

We were told if you do washing on new years day you "wash away" IE kill someone you love in the year!!!
🤔😯

PinkButtercups · 01/01/2023 10:50

Even though I say to my mum it's stupid. I still don't do it! Don't want to take the risk. I always say to my mum I wish you didn't bloody tells us it was bad luck 🤣.

LlynTegid · 01/01/2023 10:57

Washing, on a Sunday! Sacre bleu, as the French might say.

Place a ladder for him to walk under, quick!!!

jmh740 · 01/01/2023 11:02

I never put the washer on new years day oh did one year and his dad died that year so I'd rather not risk it

Well, going by the reason why mine's just put a washload of bed linen on, I'm going to have to start looking at whether he's had any strange food cravings or aversions recently, because it's sure as hell not me...

TwigsAndPebblyShit · 01/01/2023 11:05

Today is sunny, we have no tumble dryer, and the laundry is building up so I have my second load on now.

2023's bad luck can come and have a go if it thinks it's hard enough pushes sleeves up

PicturesOfLily · 01/01/2023 11:09

I have never heard of this. Just about to put the machine on as toddler dd had an exploding nappy and that’s not waiting another day!

LakieLady · 01/01/2023 11:13

I've never heard of this and am bloody sure I must have done laundry on NYD at least a few times in my 67 years.

Mind you, I've never had much luck, either, so maybe ...

BertaHoon · 01/01/2023 11:16

We were always told you'd wash a life away!

Be afraid OP 🤣

whattodo1975 · 01/01/2023 11:16

Is it possible he’s having an affair? Washing scent of other woman off clothes.

fizzyfood · 01/01/2023 11:17

If my husband did that, I'd call it the New Year's Day miracle and I'd hope he'd put the next load in too! (Pigs might fly)

Scalottia · 01/01/2023 11:17

marmitegirl01 · 01/01/2023 09:49

Most women on here would give their second born if their other half did this!!! 🤣

Most women on here need to stop being martyrs and ask their other half to do it, and stop doing everything themselves.

I do think the thread is that serious love. It's a lighthearted thread about an old superstition

Good lord, what a stupid post.

diddl · 01/01/2023 11:25

It's nonsense but I still don't do it!

DanielRicciardosSmile · 01/01/2023 11:26

I'm intrigued how many have never heard of this superstition. I always assumed it was as well known as walking under a ladder or spilling salt. I wonder now if it's regional?

I can't say I'm particularly superstitious but I still never do any laundry on New Year's Day, I'd feel too guilty if someone in the family died. And my grandma would haunt me forever!

Minniem2020 · 01/01/2023 11:34

I'd never heard of this until now. I haven't done any washing today but that's only because the weather's shite.

saturdaymorningbored · 01/01/2023 11:42

I remembered this at 10.30 last night so put a load on so I wasn't wasting on NYD.
It had never crossed my radar until my friend mentioned it a few years ago. Never done it since

BrioNotBiro · 01/01/2023 11:57

I'm totally not superstitious and don't believe any bad/good comes from them, but I think it's rather nice to carry on these old folk beliefs from our rural forebears from centuries ago.
