And hung it out.

Are we doomed (YANBU)? Or is it Superstitious claptrap (YABU)?

Nursemumma92 · 01/01/2023 10:10

Oops I've just done 2, never knew anything about this. Not worried as it's superstitious although I probably wouldn't have chanced it 😅

ScarlettSunset · 01/01/2023 10:11

Well I don't think I'll be doing any washing but that's because I can't be bothered....

BeyondMyWits · 01/01/2023 10:12

My mum used to believe in all this stuff (coincidentally died on new year's day 3 years ago). But she'd be mortified if anyone had to do washing on NY day. The house had to be thoroughly cleaned, top to bottom, laundry baskets emptied before the stroke of midnight NYEve. The first person to enter the door had to be tall and dark (never red haired) and all sorts of other crap I can't remember about coal and suchlike...

Toottooot · 01/01/2023 10:15

Wooptie fucking ping.

FasterthanBolt · 01/01/2023 10:15

It's not bad weather where we are and I have a load that could go on. However, MIL would kill me, she 'phones us every New Year's Day to check we're not doing any washing!

EatYourVegetables · 01/01/2023 10:15

Well my house is a mess and my laundry basket is full and I’m not even a tiny bit superstitious, but I will use this as an excuse for not washing anything today.

Am I allowed to wash my hair?

megletthesecond · 01/01/2023 10:18

Yanbu. I won't be washing laundry today.
I have some to hang out which should be ok.....

purpledalmation · 01/01/2023 10:19

I'm sure I read somewhere, men using a washing machine and washing line is a sign of early pregnancy. A bit like nesting.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 01/01/2023 10:21

I have a load of laundry on right now, and it's looking like a good drying day here. I did think about the superstition thing, but I was ill in the run up to Christmas and got a bit behind with the washing.

Basically we all need clean pants...

SuperPup86 · 01/01/2023 10:21

I unplugged my machine under the counter last night to make sure - or there's every possibility I'll forget at some point through the day and go stick a load on.

Lilyhatesjaz · 01/01/2023 10:22

My mum used to say do the washing on new years day and wash a friend away.
She was very superstitious
I find myself following some of these daft rules but I have been careful not to pass any of it on to my children.

Penguinsaregreat · 01/01/2023 10:23

Does anyone know if it’s ok to wash my car?

SpangoDweller · 01/01/2023 10:23

Superstitions be damned - DS wet the bed this morning so the sheets and pyjamas went in first and the duvet’s in now…

Grace33 · 01/01/2023 10:23

I've just done a load too. Great minds think alike

dudsville · 01/01/2023 10:23

I'm going to cut my hair later, 🤪. I like that i know these old superstitions because they're a fun bit of folklore, but I'm also glad i know they're claptrap, as you say, great term!

Craftycorvid · 01/01/2023 10:24

Is this a ‘thing’? My mum had a superstition about not doing laundry on Good Friday (you will wash away a member of the family, apparently, and no, I don’t think you get a choice of which one).

Anyhow, I’ll go there….as long as he didn’t leave said laundry out overnight. It will have been darked upon and spiders will have rubbed their willies on it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/01/2023 10:25

AmberGer · 01/01/2023 09:51

My nan used to say, if you did laundry on new years day you were washing your luck away

It's not your luck you're washing away , traditionally it's someone's life . Sad

I did all my washing yesterday anyway , I was watching TV (BBC Scotland ) last night about Traditions , they were cleaning the hearth of ashes and scrubbing the doorsteps on NYE

Margo34 · 01/01/2023 10:25

I'd be rejoicing that my DH worked out how to use the washing machine! That's what would make me suspicious 😂

starfishmummy · 01/01/2023 10:26

I was waiting for the "he's turned everything pink" comment.....

BeyondMyWits · 01/01/2023 10:26

@Craftycorvid "you will wash away a member of the family, apparently, and no, I don’t think you get a choice of which one)."
Don't pull that thread... I can think of a few right now...

dementedpixie · 01/01/2023 10:29

I always knew it as washing on new years day washes a life away. As far as I know my clothes washing hasn't killed anyone... yet!

I dont have space to hang anything inside today and the weather is dismal here for hanging outside

MenopauseSucks · 01/01/2023 10:30

Id never heard about a NYD load of laundry's washing your luck away!

Is he expecting a round of applause for this? If it's a regular event & he's a dab hand at dusting, vacuuming & ironing, does he have any single men in his extended family?

Theemptychair23 · 01/01/2023 10:32

You'll be fine!

I used to be really superstitious, but not so much now. I have realised that if bad luck is going to happen it will just happen, regardless of whether I walk under a ladder or not.
My Gran once told me about a man who walked in the road to avoid walking under a ladder on the pavement and got hit by a car!

I've made a doctor's appointment for Friday the 13th!

BiteyShark · 01/01/2023 10:34

Surely this superstition exists because it was a good excuse to not do chores on one day of the year when washing clothes was a massive chore.

marmitegirl01 · 01/01/2023 09:49

Most women on here would give their second born if their other half did this!!! 🤣

This!! 😂😂😂
