To Think We Should Still Be Wearing Masks

TheShellBeach · 28/12/2022 23:28

Especially seeing the news coming out of China, and the lies they seem to be telling about the Covid situation there.

I never stopped wearing a mask when shopping anyway, even though we were told it was no longer necessary.

Yes, I know that most people have now been vaccinated.

I remember during the UK lockdowns how depressed I felt at the world - not because of the virus but about the rabid nastiness of dimwits who were itching to shame no -NHS flappers, call the police if their neighbour walked the dog more than once, applauding women being arreated for meeting for a walk , filming people not wearing masks and shaming them on social media and loudly declaring people without the vaccine should be denied healthcare and not caring that the economy was being destroyed. nasty, callous little fuckers who also said #BeKind and claim they’re really selfless because they’re in the privileged position of being able to afford to lol around in their garden whilst on furlough

It really was the busybodies time to shine wasn’t it and you can tell that they miss it.

Honestly, if we end up the midst of a huge Covid surge again, then it is all you have mentioned that I would be scared of... not Covid itself.

It was an awful time.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 29/12/2022 17:30

Not really. The examples cited are either extremely far back in our evolution or very specialized and lab-generated today.

Yep same. Saw a really ugly side of humans I didn’t know existed. Didn’t exactly put me in a clapping mood, and I didn’t clap once

Why do you think masks weren’t introduced every winter when tends of thousands of vulnerable people would die of flu? Every single winter.

Jourdain11 · 29/12/2022 17:40

I remember getting hacked to pieces because my husband had taken my kids to the supermarket - SO BLOODY SELFISH and simply idiotic. I can't remember how this came up, but I was having the most horrible full on chemo for at the time after being diagnosed with AML and he couldn't exactly leave an 8, 7 and 5 year old home fending for themselves. And online slots were impossible to get at the time. But it was arrant stupidity apparently, and they should've just eaten tinned tomatoes.

I got ripped apart on SM for daring to go into my dad's house......we were sorting out mum's funeral at the time, the utter wankers.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 29/12/2022 17:45

So sorry you both experienced that. Some people really showed themselves to be bullies didn’t they!

I was told my DH should ‘get a grip’ or stay indoors indefinitely because he couldn’t wear a mask due to military related PTSD - putting one on gave him panic attacks due to a traumatic incident he experienced in Iraq in the early 00’s. The disregard for MH at this time out this country back 50 years.

I mean, it doesn't surprise me. Quite a number of people told me I was selfish for seeking out medical attention when becoming suddenly and rapidly quite unwell. I should've left the NHS alone at this terrible time. It's lucky that I didn't, otherwise I'd probably be dead! Unfortunately I did make a chemo friend whose cancer was diagnosed very late due to the difficulties she had making appointments during lockdown, and she died in November. By the time she was diagnosed, it was terminal. So sad - she was 37. I was very lucky to be seen, prioritised and treated quickly.

A bit gloomy and a bit OT - sorry.

Loving the little support group forming in this thread of people who were “ripped to shreds” or “torn to pieces” for not wearing a mask or venturing out to get food.

I can’t imagine your pain , it must have been horrifying.

FrostyFifi · 29/12/2022 17:55

@SavoirFlair the "little support group" as you call it is discussing bereavements and cancer diagnosis.

titanicteaspoons · 29/12/2022 17:56

I agree with you @TheShellBeach even though I’m clearly in the minority!

But then my young DC has post covid ME since catching covid for the second time so I have first hand experience of what this dreadful virus can do. It’s devastating seeing your previously healthy, fit child unable to walk or even eat without help.

Mitigations such as clean, filtered air in schools and enclosed areas and N95 masks would indeed make a difference to this air borne virus.

Sad to see all the sneery replies, but unsurprising, as reflective of our selfish society.

MajorCarolDanvers · 29/12/2022 17:57

Covid Bingo well and truly back on this thread.

It was....imagine being called "selfish", "irresponsible" and the absolute belter, being blamed for my own mother's death just for having the gall to be in the same house as an 83 year old man having to organise a funeral for his wife of 58 years. You really have no idea do you?

Go and search my messages @FrostyFifi . My DC has cancer.

People like you really frustrate me - always using cancer or bereavement as a way of bludgeoning away criticism or debate on an issue.

You’re not the only one in the camp! Some of us have immunocomprimised family who could really benefit from a bit of mask wearing - but we put up and shut up because we have to , thanks to the “NEVER AGAIN WILL I BE CONTROLLED AND WEAR A FACE NAPPY” crew

honestly

Scarecrowrowboat · 29/12/2022 18:07

No I hate them and ditched as soon as allowed. I've never had Covid (test regularly) and regularly spend time in very crowded spaces and v busy public transport. I know people who wear them obsessively, avoid crowds and have had Covid multiple times so I don't really believe they make much difference. I think some people are just susceptible to getting it.

SunlightInParis · 29/12/2022 18:11

It's over now. Just like a cold.
We need to learn to continue to treat it as such.

Really.

I was torn to shreds by people I thought were friends. Told I should be tried for murder, and that maybe I should top myself to do to the world a favour, as I was clearly very dangerous.
Or the bloke in the supermarket who took his own mask off to hiss at me that people like me were to blame for lockdowns.
All because I was unable to wear a mask. The self appointed mask police were utterly vile. Some thoughts really should stay in your head. Covid brought out all the cunts who had just been itching to have a go at a strangers.
That is just masks. There were people facing vitriol for leaving their house to go to work, to attend to loved ones. When the vaccine was rolled out, it brought with it a whole other lot of people who ended up showing their vile and true colours.

Jourdain11 · 29/12/2022 18:13

@SavoirFlair I'm sorry about your DC and I hope they are receiving good treatment.

I wasn't too fussed about being called selfish or whatever when I was dx with leukaemia a fortnight after lockdown started, but it was rather tough not to see my kids for 6 weeks. And my eldest DD has been left with terrible OCD because she was so afraid that she would "kill me" by passing on a virus which she ultimately had next to no control over.

FrostyFifi · 29/12/2022 18:15

@SavoirFlair I'm sorry about your DC.
You misunderstand, I don't have cancer and haven't had a recent bereavement, I was defending those who were discussing those issues who you so snidely refered to as a "little support group". That was unnecessary and unkind and now instead of acknowledging that you are doubling down.

I don’t get this post - are you claiming these claims aren’t true or are you just being contrary and dickish because people arent pandering to your unhealthy neurosis?

Lydia, one poster tried to rip me ON THIS THREAD for struggling with mask wearing due to my claustrophobia. The only reason it didn't descend into a pile-on is because the tide has shifted. The way mental health and #BeKind was jettisoned in the last two years has left me with a huge mistrust of the public at large

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 29/12/2022 18:21

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 29/12/2022 17:30

Not really. The examples cited are either extremely far back in our evolution or very specialized and lab-generated today.

You asked which viruses are good for humans and I've given you examples plus links to further reading on the subject.

That you dismiss these because they are "lab-generated" or have occured too far back in evolution and are therefore not acceptable examples just shows that you don't really understand the subject. Bacteriophages as an example, are naturally and continously occurring viruses that naturally and continously benefit humans.

However, your subsequent replies indicate that you're not open to learning about the topic and have a closed opinion that won't be changed by me or anyone else, so you do you, I guess.
