I just want a really good vacuum cleaner that doesn't cost a fortune.

I'm so sick of my cordless dyson. It was great when I got it but now struggles to pick up a crumb and claims to be blocked all the time (it's not blocked). I can't afford to spend that sort of money these days, just want something reasonably priced and effective! Corded too. Please tell me about your reliable vacuum cleaners?!

Take the Dyson apart - really apart - and clean all if it.

DH did our v7 again yesterday- it's 6 years old and seems to need doing annually as it always stops working at this time of year. A good clean and it's up and running again. You tube is your friend.

Ireolu · 29/12/2022 19:58

Have you cleaned or changed the filter on your Dyson? We have a couple of filters and wash and change regularly. You can get a new one from amazon for about 25 quid.

KirstenBlest · 29/12/2022 19:59

If you have pets or long hair, use a rubber broom to sweep first. Then a cheapish vacuum cleaner will be fine - my last two came from Argos.

Teacoaster · 29/12/2022 19:59

I've had multiple cordless vacuum cleaners, and even a corded Dyson, but they've all failed after so many months/years.

I bought a Henry (and aside from being the old vacuum my little boy isn't frightened of) the suction is second to none. Long live Henry.

TheVeryThing · 29/12/2022 19:59

Shark lift away was useless on hard floors, pretty good on carpet initially. The hose and tube don’t come apart completely and we couldn’t clear a blockage at the curved part of the handle so had to get rid of it.

LillianGish · 29/12/2022 20:02

Henry all the way. I've had mine for 15 years and its still going strong - love the long cord and the big bags. Stayed with my mum over Christmas and spent as much time fiddling with and emptying her Dyson as I did hoovering. If money were no object I'd possibly try a Miele, but Henry is less than half the price so for efficiency and good value it has to to Henry

Wishawisha · 29/12/2022 20:04

Also vote for Henry.

Shark lasted longer than the Dyson but still went the same way eventually. I don’t want flash now, I just want my vacuum to last.

DeathMetalMum · 29/12/2022 20:08

We have a sebo felix. First bagged hoover I've ever owned and a love just emptying the bag into the bin, no faffing with cleaning filters or getting covered in dust when emptying the hoover.

Suction is much better because of the bag. I can hoover the while house from one plug socket if needed (small 2 bed). Only thing is not as many extras, ideally I would have an extra pole for the crevice tool - it can be bought but I haven't yet got round to it in three years. Best part is every single part can be bought individually on the website if replacements are needed.

Sukisal · 29/12/2022 20:09

For suction and quality, Henry or Miele.

Given Henry is about 1/3 of the price of Miele, it’s Henry every time in my house. I have 4-6 dogs home most of the time, and we live on a smallholding.

Blossomandbee · 29/12/2022 20:09

I like Dysons for manoeuvrability but they do block easily and do lose suction over time, despite cleaning parts and filters.
Shark are bloody awful, I don't get the hype at all.
I've recently bought a Henry Xtra as I've got carpets and wanted a brush bar. So far so good!

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2022 20:09

Henry every time. Tough as old boots and extremely sucky!

Foxgluv · 29/12/2022 20:13

A corded Dyson has never failed me.

I've found sharks to be complete crap.

theemmadilemma · 29/12/2022 20:15

Literally just said again to DH how much I love this: Shark Corded Stick Vacuum Cleaner [HZ500UKT] Pet Model, Anti Hair Wrap, Flexology, Rose Gold https://amzn.eu/d/cGajg7B

pastypirate · 29/12/2022 20:16

Go and get the dyson serviced. I found a dyson repair chap locally god he's amazing and well worth the cash. He's repaired ours twice now and I've spent about £50 in total. He also gave great advice about maintaining and he fits sone magic deodorant filter thing in it.
Also I found buying replacement filters off Amazon very handy as I now have about 5 and can change them v quickly.

Southwig22 · 29/12/2022 20:17

I feel your pain.

I have a shark cordless liftaway, and honestly it's not great at all. Various parts have broken within warranty and needed replacement, then something happened to the brush bar that damaged my floor and the whole vacuum had to be replaced (still in warranty).

I'd love to know the answer to this, what is a decent cordless vacuum that actually does the job?!

YourWinter · 29/12/2022 20:33

My Henry will be 14 in January. I love that the cord is so long I can vacuum the whole of downstairs, and over half the staircase, without unplugging it. Great capacity, great suction, dislikes are that it is quite heavy to carry up and down stairs, and it doesn’t corner well, it falls over all the time. Well worth the £99 it cost.

I have pets, and long hair, the carpets are ancient and will never look immaculate, but after borrowing a Dyson v10 cordless I’m baffled at their appeal.

Miele. Reasonably priced, last ages and work really well.

Second this. We've got one. We call her 'Miele' (surprise surprise) pronounced der German way. She is very efficient. You have to change her stomach every now & then but we'd never swap her for a bagless.

QuietYou · 28/12/2022 18:40

Miele. Reasonably priced, last ages and work really well.

Miele cylinder, really fantastic vacuums, Sharks are too shabby for me.

Unforgettablefire · 29/12/2022 20:51

Henry. Would use nothing else now.

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 29/12/2022 21:16

Miele here. I love it. Got it in the sale for £99

Marilla1966 · 29/12/2022 22:28

A Sebo every time. Not fancy or brimming with attachments but does the job better than any other make I have had before.

BMW6 · 29/12/2022 22:41

Nah I adore our cordless Dyson. Wouldn't change it for anything.

NotLovingWFH · 29/12/2022 22:46

i have a Dyson V15 absolute. It’s amazing and on a cost per use incredibly good value. I can vacuum my whole 4 bed house easily on one charge. It has never blocked up and the only maintenance it needs is a monthly rinse of the filter. Even with a constantly shedding dog and a busy house it keeps everything clean and as dust free as possible and because it’s so much easier to use I vacuum daily where with my corded Miele it meant dragging round a heavy cylinder that caught on everything. The fluffy head is great on hard floors and the brush one is good on carpet and rugs.

I have had big powerful corded vacuums and a multitude of cordless Dysons but nothing that’s as good all round as the Dyson 15, it’s worth every penny.

QueenofLouisiana · 29/12/2022 22:52

Just replaced my shit Shark with a GTech Air RAM. I had a garden cane in the larder just to unblock the tube on my shark. DH even recognised the pattern of hoovering, stopping, swearing and stomping to the bin. He would bring the cane along.
GTech is great, it came with a handheld one for the stairs etc. The amount it pulled up was disgusting- even when I knew I'd hoovered three times a week with the Shark.

Bingo78 · 29/12/2022 22:53

Another Henry fan here! Three kids (two messy teens and an 11 year old), 2 fluffy cats and a mountain biking husband and Henry never lets me down…. I also love that you remove the bag completely so it’s nice and clean inside. Also very reasonably priced.
