AIBU To Think Joey Maynard (Of Chalet School Fame) Was Insufferable

TheShellBeach · 28/12/2022 17:11

.............with her eleven children, infuriating husband and bizarre tendency to move house (and country) to live next door to the school her sister inexplicably started when Joey was a child.

She also managed to write (at least) two books a year, have a series of multiple pregnancies and poke her nose into the Chalet School's business on a daily basis.

They've all been published but very few are still in print.

In print with GGBP, I mean.
They've definitely published them all.

I'd kidded myself there was still some they hadn't published yet that I would be able to obtain cheaply when they did publish them.

They're re publishing them all.
Very, very slowly.

I don’t actually own a physical copy, I think unlike most I’m a bit younger than those on this thread (24) and only discovered the books through MN. I have a seen a copy once but it was £30 and out of my budget. I always keep an eye out in the charity book shops though

I was going to say that you can buy second hand Armada copies cheaply but from a quick look on Amazon I'm not sure that's true.

I used to love the Chalet School books! My nan used to scour charity shops for them.
My mum got rid of all of them after she had a clear out without telling me.

If anyone can send me links to PDF's or anything else I'll be eternally grateful.
About to go in for an op with 6 weeks recovery time. Anything to help the time fly past!

Gah! And then I had a quick look on EBay and now I've bought another GGB and bid on yet another!

Damn you all!

FelicityBeedle · 17/02/2023 12:22

@TinselAngel
i know it’s a bit daft but I like the challenge of looking for physical copies! I’m quite happy with ebooks so if I find any it’s just a bonus

this place seems to be priced more reasonably than ebay

You can blame me.
I've had a little stocktake and I only need 21 more......

They're a good source for the Armada books but almost no GGBP.

If I still lived in London I would look all the time in second hand shops, charity shops etc.

But DH and I moved to the middle of nowhere in Scotland in 2017 and there are no shops (well, very few) near our house - and the shops we do have are things like the Co-Op, the butcher and the many, many cafes and a few gift shops.

Our village is very remote and very attractive and we love living here but buying stuff is challenging. We even have to drive ten miles to the next village to collect our Tesco or Morrison's groceries. There are no supermarkets anywhere near but you can order online and the vans deliver several days a week.

You'll laugh when you discover that I was THRILLED when Morrison's started to deliver.

I do not think that Scotland was ever very keen on the CS anyway. Before we moved here permanently we often came on holiday to various parts of Scotland and although I looked assiduously for CS books in charity shops, I failed to find even a dog-eared old Armada copy of The School at the Chalet.

NEWSFLASH

I have started to read Two Sams, which arrived today via eBay.

I've been collecting for years but am picky about what I spend lots of money on. If the Armada paperbacks are uncut then I don't spend on the hardback because - what's the difference? The Friends of the Chalet School used to have a very useful list showing how heavy the cuts had been but I don't know if they still do. I printed mine out and keep it carefully😁

alterego2 · 17/02/2023 16:19

Another thought:
TopsyTurvey Books used to sell GGBP books
Also Gill Bilski was a good source - but not cheap

ZacharinaQuack · 17/02/2023 16:23

I expect the whole of Scotland was offended by the Highland Twins' accents.

I am still assiduously reading my way through the dropbox so no time to post, but wanted to recommend eurobuch.com for second-hand books (you'll have to navigate the German search engine but that's in the spirit of German Day). Do a detailed search and select 'wahrscheinlich Englisch' as the language. It's basically just a metasearch of all the likely online source of second-hand books, so it'll give you the usual ebay, amazon, abebooks etc. but will also cover loads of other sources.

We went on holiday to Scotland last year. We stopped off in Wigtown - Scotland’s book town - and I spotted a couple of Chalet School books in one of the bookshops. A bookshop specialising in children’s books. They were Armada ones that I’ve already got, so I left them on the shelf.
Photographic evidence hopefully attached!
Although this was a few months ago, so someone else might have bought them by now.

TheShellBeach · 17/02/2023 21:49

Ah. Wigtown. We had a lovely holiday there once.
It was before my CS obsession so I never looked for the books there.
I did get a lot of true crime books though.

I think that Hay on Wye would be a good place to look.

Maybe they're more into Dorita Fairlie Bruce in Scotland.

Hay on Wye? Only if you want to pay top dollar...

I am Scottish and grew up here and am a big fan. My mum bought CS books as gifts for my much older cousins who then wouldn't let me touch them.

I'm pretty sure there used to be a Glasgow meet up reported in the FOCS newsletter.

I have almost a full set of hardbacks now after many years of collecting. I'm very fortunate that dh thought it was a good way to solve Christmas and birthdays
