AIBU To Think Joey Maynard (Of Chalet School Fame) Was Insufferable

TheShellBeach · 28/12/2022 17:11

.............with her eleven children, infuriating husband and bizarre tendency to move house (and country) to live next door to the school her sister inexplicably started when Joey was a child.

She also managed to write (at least) two books a year, have a series of multiple pregnancies and poke her nose into the Chalet School's business on a daily basis.

You’re right, anything less than the bladder capacity of an elephant is just not the done thing for a chaletian.

EmpressaurusOfWitchesBackFromTheDead · 09/02/2023 09:54

And no Chaletian is ever caught short by her period either.

FelicityBeedle · 09/02/2023 09:56

I’m fairly sure they only get their periods for the first time on their wedding nights, to stop too much enthusiasm on their husband’s part. They are then as regular as clockwork, having as much as one period every two years between the endless babies.

I remember how refreshing it was when Antonia Forest had Ginty and Monica do a hasty calculation to check their periods wouldn't coincide with a diving match.

Happy feast of St Scholastica to you all!Grin

I will do some prayerful reflection and read a religious book on this gentle Sunday, to make up for missing it!

Don’t you need to sit under some blossom trees (or something like that), and have your headmistress read to you?

Hello CS fans! I was delighted to find this thread as a result of searching for "A problem for the CS" which is missing from my burgeoning collection. Even more thrilled with the Dropbox link, having already spent a king's ransom on the physical books. And Mumsnet of all places....I'm being an EBD stereotype here but I always imagined MN to be full of competitive parents making disparaging remarks such as "Oh, isn't he/she walking/talking/reading War and Peace yet? Mine were doing all three when they were 6 months old!" However,I digress....I am currently reading CS in the Oberland and eagerly anticipating Elma and Edna talking each other to death in their own peculiar styles. Loved the part when they all got eaten by ants 😂

Oh I couldn't abide the vomit-inducing universal adoration for a 6 year old "baby" who seemed to frequently lose the use of her legs and be carried everywhere. Was she toilet-trained by the time she went to Oxford?

Can we add doctors (lots of doctors), going to the dentist, kerrazy evening entertainments, trilingual, and matey

And twins/triplets who bear not the slightest resemblance to each other

Just about, I think.

I always thought it was odd that the Robin could not dress or wash herself at the age of 10.

Mind you, everything about the Robin was odd.
Ans welcome to the thread! Have you found A Problem For The CS in the dropbox? You'll love "big" Joan Baker, with her perm, make-up and unsuitable clothes.

Thank you for the welcome! And yes thanks, I have found Problem in Dropbox. Joan B sounds great fun, how about Miranda Hart to play her? She'd need to perm her hair though!

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 13/02/2023 14:52

I'm fascinated by the way in CS in the Oberland wearing makeup had become an essential part of being a Chalet School (finishing branch) girl, when a couple of decades earlier it was proof of moral decline and guaranteed to destroy the skin.

Joan Baker is common, so Miranda Hart would be unsuitable. Grin

To be fair to the Robin 'Amy Stevenson was just as needful of baths from the senior girls. :)

Joan baker was the dark to rosamund Lilly's light on allowing council girjs into the CS. But Joan was a pools win and roz was promoted by the Gays!!

On the gays Tom/Jack lambert/Ted/Dorothy brentham would be down the Tavistock asap today.

Shouldn't joke really as bloody sad

I want an Anna in my house :)

smileladiesplease · 13/02/2023 19:53

Joan baker... Jessie J

smileladiesplease · 13/02/2023 19:57

Yes on the makeup Suzanne mercier was sanctioned for wearing powder but Bridie Bettany applied it on the train.

I guess it was EBD trying to update so fair enough

TheShellBeach · 13/02/2023 22:16

Thanks for that. I love CS threads.

I’m reading www.sallydennylibrary.co.uk/viewseries.php?seriesid=4. It’s a saga mainly from the viewpoint of Marie Pfeiffen, Karen, Anna & co.

there are some amazing fan fic stories on the SD library - the bettany saga is my favourite.

I've had a rather sad ambition to get a whole collection of the GGBP editions of the CS books.

So anyway, I spent most of today bidding on eBay for them. I spent £89.01.

I am not willing to confess to last month's CS book bill on eBay

How's this for a theory? Feel free to give critiques as I'm making it up as I go along, but it has occurred to me that Joey is actually the AntiChrist, having been supernaturally swapped at birth for Mrs B's real daughter. This explains the black eyes and black hair and the fainting at the Passion Play (similar to the demon yelling "IT BURNS" whilst being doused with Heiliges Wasser in the Exorcist.

Unbeknown to all, the catastrophic accidents visited on each of the school's locations are all the work of Joey the AC, but nobody suspects her because she spends her life pretending to be a delicate, God-fearing Christian.

Only 2 of her children - Margot and Michael - show signs of being the spawn of Satan, so as to put everyone off the scent by assuming they are just naughty and/or difficult.

Hilarious you may be right... :)
