Lifeguards at swimming pool

I went swimming with DS who has ASD and DH yesterday. It would have been great and we would have all had a lovely time. There was a big slide DS was desperate to go on but there is a height restriction and only for people who can swim independently, neither of which DS can do. I suggested DH went on with DS but the lifeguard at the top manning the slide said no. She just watched as DH grappled with DS who was having a huge tantrum and risked falling down the stairs and getting seriously hurt. Should she have done more?

Sorry no this was back in the pool minutes later as we were trying to distract DS by swimming with him. Sorry I didn’t explain this wasn’t at the slide.

That’s probably Because they are young and couldn’t believe how entitled you are. They were also staring to make sure that your child was ok. It isn’t just safety in the water but everywhere in the pool.

it would be good if you just admitted that you were so wrong.

Your DH should have taken your son away from the slide. It's not the lifeguards problem. Why would they risk their job and possibly others lives to break rules for your family?

MelchiorsMistress · 29/12/2022 10:29

Unfortunately one or two lifeguards did stand staring, which yes it wasn’t their job to intervene but then they should have been watching the swimmers, not staring at us.

Why are you so determined to have the lifeguards come out if this badly. They’re teenagers or student age, working over their holidays and doing their job the way they’ve been instructed to.

They may have watched you inappropriately, but they’re kids who did their job that day a lot better than you did so I don’t understand why you seem so sure they are worthy of criticism. More likely though, they were watching to make sure no more of your bad decisions led to a situation that could become unsafe and if they had completely ignored you you’d be on here complaining about that.

Own your own mistakes without criticising others.

They were watching the swimmers....you, your husband, and your child who you were both struggling with 🙄

They were doing their job, whether you want to admit it or not.

If you are unable to follow pool safety and understand a lifeguard's role, then you should not be in a pool. The lifeguard is there to observe everyone and I bet they'd have been on the radios to carefully watch your family since you'd already created a disturbance. I know I would have been.

I usually do observe the rules. Taking DS up the slide was a knee jerk reaction but a bad one which was wrong, DH and me are responsible most of the time. I for one will make sure there’s far less chance of it happening again. I’ll forget the lifeguards now.

I usually try to make sure DS observes the rules too. We didn’t complain to the manager or lifeguards so we didn’t get them into unnecessary trouble.

I don’t think you’d have got them into trouble at all if you had complained. I think their manager would have congratulated them for following the rules and dealing with a difficult situation.

They wouldn't be in trouble because THEY DOD NOTHING WRONG!

Glittertwins · 29/12/2022 12:26

If I was the duty manager, I'd have actively encouraged the lifeguards to make an incident report too (if this is still done).

DairyDiary · 29/12/2022 12:37

The only thing more she could reasonably have done would be to ask you to leave seeing as you don’t think that the rules in place to keep your child safe apply to your child and so you’re an accident waiting to happen. There’s nothing else she could’ve done.

Harcar · 29/12/2022 12:45

I can say no more. You are probably all saying what my DM and DD would say and DS.

Don't worry about it anymore OP, it's done now.

You're doing the right thing by making sure you go to a pool without a slide next time.

zingally · 29/12/2022 13:26

What did you expect her to do? Of course it's not her job to help manhandle your child back down the stairs.

Presumably there was a sign at the bottom detailing the rules of the slide? Not her issue you can't read/chose not to follow them.
