To try and pop this lump?

I’ve got a horrible lump on the back of my ear, obviously I can’t see it but DH said it looks like a massive zit. It’s about as big as an M&M - it’s getting painful now.

GP surgery is closed until 6th Jan. it doesn’t warrant an emergency appointment - I’ve got some sterile needles, should I just pop the fucker?

I think you should just pop sudocreme on it, get some sleep and let your body sort it out. Sounds like it's in a really awkward place for popping yourself.

PauliesWalnuts · 27/12/2022 23:03

I have these every couple of months - they are really painful! I put some mag sulphate on a big plaster before I go to bed; that usually gets it, erm, ready.

Salome61 · 27/12/2022 23:16

I wouldn't pop it. I woke up with a pus filled lump on my inner eyelid and popped it with a sterilised needle, felt raw and was agony afterwards and took three weeks to heal.

I know it hurt when you put the hot cup against it, but that's the advice for a 'lump' to draw it. Could you bear a piece of hot cotton wool? Boil the kettle, let it cool a bit and fill a bowl with a little cold water then the boiling and squeeze the cotton wool ball out and apply for as long as it's hot.

AramintaLee · 27/12/2022 23:21

I had the exact same thing on my ear earlier this year. You've got to be patient with it and wait until its reached full popping potential. If you try too soon, it just hurts like a motherf*cker. Mine took what felt like weeks before I was able to pop it (wonderfully satisfying but there was a lot of pus and blood)

Trudij123 · 27/12/2022 23:21

Do it do it do it!!!

Lilliflip · 27/12/2022 23:22

I had one like that about 6 weeks ago. It got bigger than yours and nothing would come out as it was really hard to get done purchase on it myself.
eventually I persuaded DH to give it a massive squeeze. It finally went with a loud ‘crack’ and shot across the room. I was gutted he’d refused to film it useless non sporner.

Arsepants · 27/12/2022 23:25

Fuckinh hell

MatildaTheCat · 27/12/2022 23:30

OP stop listening to these foul sporners.

Im a former nurse of much experience. My DB developed such a lump behind his ear and begged me to do my stuff on it. I tried- oh God I tried. No way and frankly he was in pain. A lot of pain.

So we took him to the minor injuries unit. Who also failed and sent him to A&E. They tried and called in an ENT consultant. He decided it required a procedure which was eventually carried out as a day case.

Long story short, get proper medical attention and if it’s a cyst it
needs excision not squeezing.

Best of luck.

Gerwurtztraminer · 28/12/2022 00:04

Jeez. If it's not obviously infected (i.e red, hot, spreading out, with a head, already discharging fluid) then do not try to pop it. In fact even if it is infected don't - get some advice from a pharmacist at very least.

It could well be a sebaceous cyst/epidermoid cyst/epidermal inclusion cyst. Google it and find pictures & descriptions. Then ask a pharmacist their opinion. If it gets much bigger/painful or you start to feel generally unwell then try the GP.

I get little cysts all the time, usually in the fold between earlobe and face, sometime behind the earlobe. Some are quite big and can feel very tender but they eventually go away, but @MatildaTheCat is right, if it is a cyst it might need excision to get rid of it.

Where do I find sporners corner? Asking for a friend….

Type sporner in search field at the very top top of the page, on the left hand side a link to sporner’s corner will appear.

Enjoy 😉

My fellow blackhead/zit/cyst/spot squeezers, good evening! This has been hilarious and so much of the same thoughts and drools swirl my mind when contemplating best ways to bring that puss to a head and burst it to smitherines!

Are we a sub group because there are so many people that are repulsed by the squeeze of a spot. I personally don’t get those repulsed ,but happy to take ownership.

To add to the tips O.P; over the next few days roll tip of thumb over the lump like a rollerball. I’m not sure why but this action tends to ripen the little cyst. D.P had one and the same place and after it exploded with puss, (refilling to my delight a couple of times) it left a little harmless crack behind the ear for a while. Can not wait for the update like so many before me 🤣Off to see if I can beg to search for a blackhead fix on d.p whether he likes it or not. Headlock if necessary. Wish he had that back of ear cyst again.

And people wonder why Drs are unable to see everyone! Time wasters like this ffs

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 28/12/2022 00:14

I had one of these for 6 months! Then at the start of December I went down with a nasty virus and it ballooned up. I started messing with it and it just exploded! It was spurting out pus, soaking tissue after tissue! Very satisfying, but a bit gruesome.

bingobanjo · 28/12/2022 00:18

It’s definitely a blackhead, you can see the tip. How do you squeeze, are you using your nails? You need your finger tips to be gripping right round the entire bump in a wide as “stance” as possible. If you can’t get anything, let it rest for a couple of days and try again. It will take a very firm squeeze indeed! Possibly try and scratch away that little tip to start it off and squeeze, I’m not about needles/scalpels.

JFDIYOLO · 28/12/2022 01:50

I just had the same thing! Hurt a lot, plus a gland swelled up on my neck just under it, probably because of the pus ..... I fiddled and squeezed til it went but very disappointingly without a noise or much result. It's wandered off now.

Dotcheck · 28/12/2022 02:01

<wanders aimlessly over to thread>

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/12/2022 05:38

I am in equal measure, fascinated and grossed out, if it were possible to read and post on a thread whilst hiding behind a sofa.. thats me.

I am team scalpel/needle (appropriately cleaned/new) and stab that mofo!

MarshaMelrose · 28/12/2022 05:49

I had a similar one on the front if my earlobe. I kept squeezing but couldn't get it to go away. It was just crunching under theskin. Eventually I used a razor blade to get to the bottom of it. It has not returned.

isthismylifenow · 28/12/2022 06:02

I'm not sure a cup of coffee is going to sort this one out.

It needs a day or two to be properly ready for the big squeeze...

Of course we will need an updated pic today.

olympicsrock · 28/12/2022 06:07

It is an inflamed/ infected sebaceous cyst. You can clearly see a punctum. It does not look like it should be lanced . There is no surrounding erythema and is firm rather than fluctuant.

stop squeezing it and apply an antiseptic! Don’t be egged on ….

Gruffalo101 · 28/12/2022 06:23

No no and no , don't pop this. A potential side effect to a non sterile procedure for something in and around your ear is very dangerous. Phone and discuss with whatever your health line is ??? 111 . But do not stick any needles in it !!!!

Ok I'm on other long running threads with @olympicsrock and she really does rock. A brilliant doctor and generous with time and advice. Though it's galling for a sporner to say it, listen to the doc! (But if it involuntarily pops, would still love to see it.)
