To really dislike female radio DJs?

I either find them hugely irritating, mindlessly positive and over enthusiastic and insincere like Zoe Ball ( have to turn her off in the morning, she's too much and I fear she's going to spontaneously combust with over excitement ) Elaine Paige ( with her incredibly annoying gurgling laugh), Sara Cox and Lisa Tarbuck ( with her stupid zany voices, cringe ) or insufferably earnest and pretentious like Jo Wiley or Mary Anne Hobbs on 6 Music.

Tbf I did like Annie Mac, Annie Nightingale and Janice Long but that's probably because they seemed genuinely into the music they played and weren't twats.

I'm probably being unreasonable but I honestly can't bear to listen to them!

I don't enjoy the majority of the female djs you've listed, OP. However I don't think it's to do with their gender, just their style. I hate a good few male djs too. I like Harriet Scott and Emma B and the lady who does weeknight on magic and I like Vanessa Feltz.

Feels like most peoples DJ preferences are even narrower than their dating preferences!

themanwho · 28/12/2022 10:02

Lauren Lavern is brilliant. She my favourite radio DJ

Sophie Ellis Bexter is amazing on kitchen discos.

Sara Cox and Zoe Ball I can take with a pinch of salt. They are both on R2 prime slots though which means a lot of cheese and upbeat manner is expected.

Lisa Tarbuck really grates though… but Christ… Jeremy Vine, and Ken bloody Bruce… they are the worst

RenoDakota · 28/12/2022 10:15

Agree with you re the monumentally irritating Liza Tarbuck, OP. All that fake zaniness has me rushing to turn Radio 2 off until she has finished.
Equally though, I cannot stand 80s cheeseball throwback Gary Davies.
Love Lauren Laverne, Jo Wiley and Vanessa Feltz.
Also love Steve Lamacq, Tony Blackburn and Dermot O'Leary.

So, it's not a woman or man thing for me, but I get you.

malificent7 · 28/12/2022 10:23

Cerys Mathews is lovely. Yabu.

I’ve noticed about a few female DJs over the years (discounting Annie Mac, Janice Long etc as I never listened to radio 1 when younger) is some of them either do like to be seen as mad, trendy, music gurus etc. actually take that back, I did see Salt n Pepa live once with Spinderella.

A few like Claudia Winkelman, Zoe Ball, Lisa Tarbuck, it does seem like they’re in the positions they are mostly because of their parents. But then you could say the same of eg Roman Kemp.

I used to go clubbing and out a lot when younger and it was rare to see a female DJ apart from eg Sister Bliss etc. Then I got to know one through a friend of mine, she was really into her music and actually quite good and her dad owned a hotel in Ibiza so she DJ’d there as well as in some London bars.

@Thepeopleversuswork - yep, I don’t really hear much about Zoe Ball but she does have a very much “look at how mad I am” persona and I’ve other young female DJs copy her in this.

It’s that slightly husky London “media voice” thing. You hear it in lots of ads, too. I think it started with Dani Behr back in the 90s. There’s an incredibly irritating lilt to it, I’d associate it with the ladette scene. Of which many of the DJs you mentioned were a part of.

Oh god yeah… I live on outskirts of south east London and used to work and live more centrally in London, more recently in Soho/Fitzrovia. More annoying media accents/attitudes than you can shake a stick at, both male and female but you do get used to them…

@Stunningscreamer - I actually like and admire a lot of female sports presenters.

DorritLittle · 28/12/2022 11:10

Zoe Ball's "I'm mad" persona is clearly genuine, just look at her Dad.

Meant to say, I hate the warbling wanker Michael Ball even more than Gary Davies.

Complete & utter internalised misogyny

AnImaginaryCat · 28/12/2022 11:51

Move to Ireland and it'll flip your opinion. There are 2.5 DJs here that aren't irritating. All are female.

(The rest are mostly male, and range from having you mutter "stup up and just play music" to turning off the radio to poke knitting needles in your ears irritating.)

Dartmoorcheffy · 28/12/2022 11:59

Liza tarbuck is hilarious. I did take a while to warm to her but after listening to a few shows completely changed my mind. She's funny, can laugh at herself, and it's an entertaining show.

nottheoptics · 28/12/2022 12:24

Oh you're absolutely right, I dislike all women as a rule. They shouldn't be allowed to broadcast, women just don't know as much as men, do they?

HarlanPepper · 28/12/2022 12:37

I love Liza Tarbuck, always have. And Sara Cox. I love Cerys Matthews too. I think Jo Whiley is fine, clearly knowledgeable and passionate about music. I have never warmed to Mary Ann Hobbs. Zoe Ball is fine. Annie Nightingale was a class act. I'm pretty choosy about male DJs as well though. On 6 music I only really like Iggy Pop. Guy Garvey plays some great stuff but he is so pleased with himself. Can't bear Gilles Peterson, he's like a male Mary Ann Hobbs. Steve Lamacq struggles to feign interest in any of his callers.

tigger1001 · 27/12/2022 19:52

If you struggle to like any female dj and say it's because they are female, then yes you are being unreasonable.

I can take or leave Zoe ball - I do find her a bit like an excitable puppy and that doesn't work for me first thing.

I love Sara cox, Claudia winkleman and Liza tarbuck though.

Couldn't stand Chris evans though.

I'm exactly the opposite to you about the people you mentioned. Though Zoe is getting a bit too much for me!

These are good DJs you mentioned but adverts drive me crazy.

Tempone · 27/12/2022 19:48

You are conditioned by society not to like female dj's..same as female comedians

Yawn 🥱

Seashor · 04/02/2023 13:39

I know it’s not popular but I absolutely agree with you op regarding Zoe Ball and Sara Cox but I love Elaine Paige and Liza Tarbuck. Greg James is my absolute favourite though, I swoon over his voice.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/02/2023 13:49

I can't stick Scott Mills, Oooo Gary Davis, Jeremy Vine (not quite DJ) or Dermot. I listen to Zoe for about half an hour in the morning and can see how she could be a bit much for some Grin.

All the other radio presenters I listen to are female. Sara, Jo, Liza and yes even Elaine! Claudia is the most naturally funny and witty person on the radio at present. You are really missing out OP, poor you.

ToWhitToWhoo · 04/02/2023 13:52

I find most DJs annoying. If you're not a bit of a show-off, you are unlikely to want to be a DJ. I don't find female one worse than males, however.

beachcitygirl · 04/02/2023 14:43

Internalised misogyny

SuperSonicMonic · 04/02/2023 15:21

Neither can I, their voices bore me to death. There’s no laughing or joking either. A good DJ makes you feel like they’re talking to you.
